What do you think about the new Shelly Motion!?
Great video, i received 3 of these and trying to add them on HA. What native integration are you talking about? I tried shellyforhass through HACS but the developer has not added support yet.
Thanks! If you go to Integrations and then add a new integration and search for Shelly, you can add them there! Be aware though as mentioned they aren't really usable so MQTT is a better option. Having said that, I'm told 2021.3 update fixes everything - will wait to see how accurate that is!
@@EverythingSmartHome awesome i will take a look. Also the integration with Alexa works great, but i have noticed 1 sec lag, probably because the device wakes up. Although the lux sensor and tamper does not work through alexa, you can set up everything through the web interface. You can then manage your routine with the preconfigured lux settings.
I had no issues with speed using Alexa as shown in the video I was pretty surprised but yeah it could be a factor! And that's good to know thanks!
Great video. Although the features of this look great i had pretty much written it off for being roughly 3x more than most others. that being said you make an interesting point about R&D. that being said will probably wait for the next iteration or until some of the bits you mentioned get improved. I am very interested to see where Shelly take things in the future as i believe they will become one of the big names in smart home especially with the more diy friendly crowd
Awesome video, you are producing great content!
Hey thanks a lot Rob, I very much appreciate that!
Great video and just what I needed! I had just bought this motion sensor and a Shelly duo to work in my Hallway. I couldn't get them to work together and was about to send them back when I watched your video. I never knew about the shelly scenes (rules as you called them) and so it is now working perfectly! I had it going via node red in home assistant and it was very hit and miss before. Thank you so much for the video it has resolved the issues as reaffirmed my love of shelly devices.
Great review!
10.3k subscribers already 🙌🏼🎉 well deserved 😊
Hahaha thanks 🥳😉🙌
one year later and the count is 71k
I have to add my 2p worth here - I bought two of these sensors about two years ago (before I read this review) so this is a kind of long term review. I use4 both of them to control lights via Alexa and I have to say they have performed flawlessly over this period of time. The batteries do seem to last about a year - at least that's the interval where I have had to recharge them.
I have had one glitch in the system, which happened a few days ago - I have one on our stairway and while transporting a new carpet upstairs, the sensor died (why? I have no idea!). Fortunately, with the assistance of a paper clip, I reset the device and it's back to normal operation again.
One anomaly I've noticed - my second sensor is located in the loft and that controls the lights via Alexa and a WiFi light switch - when triggered, the lights come on for 2 minutes, then switch off, but if movement is detected, it will immediately trigger again - I've tried to get the stairway sensor to work in a similar manner, but to no avail. Both sensors have the BLIND TIME set to the minimum of 1.
Overall, I am really happy with these sensors (having tried several others), I'd buy the Shelly sensors any time, despite the cost.
wow that thing checks in really frequently.
Looks like a nice piece of hardware. Do you know by any chance if it supports continuous motion detection? My problem with most motion sensors is, that while remaining a longer time within the range of them, the lights would go off and I would have to start jumping and waving around for the lights to come back on on again. I saw in your video here, that one can choose between 1 to 10mins for the device to wait, before switching off lights e.g. But what, if motion happens during that time? Will this timer be reset then?
Great video, is it possible also to install it outside for the light on the balkony?
What held me back from buying lots of these was the 1 minute blind time. That's just way to slow to re-fire. If it's just a software thing that would be huge. Thanks for calling it out.
Yeah totally get it, the hardware is definitely capable. Would love to see shelly add this.
Our of curiosity, what situation do you have that you need less?
@@EverythingSmartHome I'm very aggressive with my automations regarding motion. For example moving into my pantry the lights should come on and only be on for a 20 seconds. In and out. Leaving the lights on for 1 minute didn't work how I want it to. Another example is for security camera snapshots. The initial motion event captures fine but I miss the next event due to a 1 minute wait to confirm additional motion
@@calebjpryor If you configure your camera to take snapshots for 2 minutes you'll never miss an additional motion event. All it does is set a minimum on how long the event that the motion triggers must last.
Hey there fellow Scot - I'm enjoying your video series, great job! Just a heads-up on the set-up - it is strongly advised NOT to use the app (for any Shelly Device) - the app is the weakest link of some great hardware technology. Best to use the WebUI (after you enter the paring mode go to 192.168.33.1 with your phone connected to the device in your WiFi settings NOT your network); then connect to your network from there - it has option for DHCP, but is definitely advised to use their Static IP feature, where you can select a fixed IP of your choice (and outside your DHCP range would be preferred); after it is set there, you can then reconnect your phone to your network and go to the IP address you selected. There you have all the features & options directly without having to open the app. It's OK to use the app after its set up, but any programming etc is always best done through the WebUI.
Hello! Thanks, indeed the webUI is better but I was more showing what a normal user would experience during setup 😅
@@EverythingSmartHome 🤦♀️ now I have to learn how to do it the WebUI way
I'm excited to get one. If I like it I'll buy more. I've been doing a "roll my own" with an ESP8266. But the last one I built has a lot of false alarms when the heating system comes on. The sensor I used doesn't have any adjustment. And it's powered with a USB dongle plugged in the wall with a long ugly wire snaking across the wall.. If I wanted to make it battery powered, that's more stuff I have to build, plus learn how to program the ultra-low power processor on an ESP32. And I'd have to make a printed case for it all. In the end, I think the Shelly's price is fair for all the effort I'd have to put in to make something comparable.
I've built a couple DIY sensors before too like a door sensor with Arduino and RF and that lasted for a long time on battery but I know what you mean, they are ugly 😅 these are actually even way lower usage than esp32, esp32 isn't suitable for a device like this I think the power consumption is way too high. Let me know how it goes though, super interested!
Great video, eased my doubt about getting some of these. Checked conversion prices from your mentioned prices and should be about 55-58 AUS Dollars ... cheapest I can find in AUS is $76, phew that's a bit of a killer maybe
Great video! Personally I'm most interested in hardwired motion sensors for new construction. Covering a whole house can take 20-25 sensors and changing that many batteries would be quite annoying. No one seems to be reviewing hardwired solutions.
The most obvious is the Lutron LOS C Series, which can be IR, US, or IR+US. I'd love to see one of your in depth reviews of that sensor. Lutron is very proprietary so I guess it's hard for you to obtain and configure, but if you could it would be info that no one else provides. I hate to buy and install 25 expensive sensors without knowing what I'm getting!
Thanks Nate! Yeah I would hardwire too if I was doing a new build. I guess most reviewers review wireless ones because they rent and because it's much easier plus not everyone has the ability to hardwire.
I'd love to check them out, let's start a petition 😂
Show me where to sign! If you're serious, there should be a Lutron regional manager wherever you are at that should be able to help. I have no idea how much they care about such a video, but it would be smart of them to help. While they have some "entry level" stuff (Caseta), they mostly cater to high end installers. Still, getting people more familiar with what they can do draws attention and would help bring people to their high end stuff.
best review ever
Could the tamper sensor be used to turn off lights when detected?
Just thinking of our warehouse lights, as at the moment the light controls are on far wall of the warehouse and we have setup a flood light to light the way to the switches. However the amount of times I have walked into the warehouse and see people have left all the lights on are getting to frequent.
I was thinking of using this Shelly motion sensor to both switch all the lights on with the PIR, (using a shelly plus 1pm for each row (less than 16amp)), then to use the lux sensor to turn the lights off when its daylight outside (its a well lit warehouse).
I could save money by not having to fit multiple sensors and instead have it so they can touch the sensor to knock the lights off as they leave.
I hope it comes to Australia. At $40US ($52 Australian) sounds like a bargain. The reaction speed is fantastic. I subscribed.
I hope so too, fingers crossed! Thanks Michael!
Great Video!! Do you know if the trigger colour light can be disabled??
Thanks! Good question, yes you can (I think!)
Sounds like an interesting option so thanks for the review
I like the reporting times for the light sensor as I have a battery powered motion sensor that sets this far too high, to preserve battery power and you can't override this but thankfully I can run it off a USB cable and that gets me better reporting times
Which raises the question, can this be powered off the USB cable or can it only be used for charging the battery?
Thanks David, yes you can power this from USB and it will still operate. Not sure about if you remove the battery though haven't tried that!
Want to say setup was not that easy for me. I bought this based on Paul Hibbert's video on this sensor and I had to contact tech support because neither the motion sensor nor contact sensors I bought from them wanted to show up in the app. They told me to do a factory reset, connect directly to the device's SSID/WiFi signal, go to 192.168.33.1 and then connect to the network that way. I still had even more issues within the app, but eventually I got everything to work.
Can you turn the motion sensor detection lights off?
@everythingsmarthome can i use the shelly sensors with lutron switches?
I guess that would depend on which Smart Home platform you are using?
I'm seriously thinking of buying these as the standard for my house and HA integration. That would require four to start. The price is high enough to keep me thinking... so I have not leaped yet.
Yeah I agree it's a difficult decision isn't it, especially for multiple rooms or even whole house the cost starts to build up!
Great review! It's a shame that there is no humidity/temp sensor. I think that there are compensation strategies to increase PIR false alarms, based on external temp. It would be good to know the PIR performance in outdoor spaces. Also I know that they should cut some corners, but its an ugly enclosure! I will definitely consider it though!
Thanks! I agree a temp and humidity would be a nice addition for the price, maybe in the next version!
Check out their new Shelly Motion 2.
Just learnt about Shelly hence the late messages
I’m not really a fan of the esthetic of this sensor... Compared to the aqara the waf is divided by 5 😅
I’ m also tired to see this strange conversion between $ and € for products which are build in china !
The granularity of options is awesome! And the reactivity show that it is now possible to make good things with wifi.
Now I’m dreaming to be able to program this new chip from silicon labs like an esp32 ... or to be able to use it with an arduino! Because offering a web server all the time (even if this battery is pretty big) is a revolution !
Thanks for this great video !
Yeah I agree on the design, although guess it's subjective!
Yes it's technically very impressive and I love how much customisation there is!
Haha yes that would be amazing I agree!
Thanks for your support!
Bought one to replace a cheap Chinese one. Goes offline about once per week. So far I prefer my €7 Sonoff Zigbee sensors. Considering returning it at this point.
Huh that's not good at all! Wonder if you got a faulty onen have you tried support?
@@EverythingSmartHome Not yet, but I will do. Got 4 more Zigbee Sonoffs on the way thoigh..
Apple Home Support anytime ?
Seems great, but find price too high. That said, everything with a lux sensor seems very expensive. Thanks for the useful review.
Yeah I totally understand that! Thanks Alan for your comment!
Awesome product, are there any alternatives Zigbee free wifi motion sensors to compete with this? Or is this the only one? Also, why'd you have to beep alexa?
There is ones from Sonoff but this is the only one on this level that I'm aware of.
So that it didn't trigger people's Alexa if they were listening 😅
@@EverythingSmartHome hahah wow Alexa's pretty sensitive huh. I reckon Shelly is it for my purposes as Sonoff requires a zigbee hub.
Wish I could justify this. Maybe as I learn more about smart homes
Definitely not a cheap purchase!
Any benefit of these over other ZigBee options?
It will still work 20 years from now.
@@gamechannel1271 40 euros is still a big ask for 1 sensor, when you could buy 5 cheap Zigbee ones and use home assistant to keep them running. In 20 years you'll have saved more money and be able to buy whatever is on the market then.
Can this be used outdoor?
Unfortunately no, it's not IP rated.
The sensor seems great in theory, mine has been a total time waster, everyday I get "Device unresponsive", unless your a total geek and want to spend time 'holding its hand'...
Huh interesting, thanks for sharing your experience. Are you using it standalone with the Shelly app or integrated? Mine has been perfect so far apart from some issues with the HA integration at the start but have since been resolved.
Get a non-shitty wifi router bud.
First???
🙌🥳
Crap product. Randomly going offline with the standard shelly "we're working on it" response. This is an expensive paper weight.
Sorry to hear you had issues, that sucks!
Great........set up is pretty simple stuff so you don't show it!! Useless video unless you're a techy!!
I'm guessing you didn't watch or listen at all, in that case yes I can't help sorry. I literally said in the video "press and hold the button for 10 seconds till it begins to flash then in the app add it".
Also, it's called "review" not "full setup guide".
@@EverythingSmartHome Yes true it is a review....Nobody does a set up guide as it's soooo simple unless its not!
Except I showed how to set it up. I'm not sure what your finding so technical? If you can elaborate or (crazy idea) even ask how to do something perhaps I can help you to get it working instead?
@@EverythingSmartHome I apologise...just getting so frustrated with something that should be so easy!! it's just not connecting to the internet and I can only recognise it from INCLUSION mode. After registering my internet it immediately drops out and stops communicating!! Think I need to go back to Shelly. Again apologies for gobbing off!
That's all good, no problem. Have you tried factory resetting it? Hold the pin on the reset button for 10+ seconds till it flashes all the colours and then using your phone, connect to the WiFi hotspot it should open
