  • We have a new eruption in Iceland! The same volcanic system as last year started erupting again a week ago. The past week I’ve received a ton of questions about drones and volcanoes so it seems like a good idea to share with you my tips and advise when flying a drone over an active volcano. I hope you enjoy the video and learn a thing or two. Most of these tips are based on things I figured out by flying over the eruption countless hours last year.

    Thanks Jeroen, nice footage and valuable tips! I flew my drone (original Mavic Pro) over the 2021 eruption and also experienced compass issues where the drone needed to be flown full manual as also the GPS was off. Landing was difficult in rocky terrain and wind blowing.
    Some tips of my own:
    1) When it is cold, first heat up the battery you're gonna use using your own body heat
    2) Do not continue flying until your drone warns for overheating, there might already be melting damage
    3) Mavic mini drones have light plastics and will melt easier than drones having metal on their undersides (like my drone)
    4) I noticed the camera failed to auto-focus when flying too low over lava, go higher or away from the lava if you notice this
    5) Let the drone cool down a bit before flying another battery
    Some are from my own experience, luckily my drone only suffered cosmetic melting damage, I had to re-calibrate the obstacle avoidance sensors and I replaced the compass & GPS module.

      @@JVNPhoto I would really like to go to a lava on when erupting, and one of my other goals would be to go to Whakaari in New Zealand to film that Volcano even thought its not erupting/active for the time being. Is the one that you went to an active Volcano? I live in the Midwest of the United States so traveling to do drone photography of a volcano is going to involve a lot of travel. Even though I am new to your channel I subscribed so that if you do come out with a lot more of volcano related film, I want to see it. Again, very good tips and your videos of the volcanic flows out of fissures are amazing. I do have a thermal drone so seeing that under a thermal camera would be wild as well.

      It's my understanding that White Island is no longer accessible after the disaster that took place there in 2019. There's also no visible lava. The eruptions I have been documenting are the last two that took place here in Iceland. Right now there are no active eruptions here.

    Thanks, great video! What filters do you recommend for drone photo and video?

    • @JVNPhoto
      @JVNPhoto  Před rokem +1

      I use a polariser but not for filtering light. It actually protects my lens from heat. I can quickly see if my polariser is being damaged by discolouration on the footage.

  • @torskur
    @torskur Před 11 měsíci

    Great video. I have a question. You take AEB pictures (which is a fantastic advice and my drone is now set on this mode) and panorama. Is there a feature in the drone that takes both the AEB and panorama pictures or do you just move the drone verically/horizontally?

    • @bartjes2509
      @bartjes2509 Před 11 měsíci

      I do this manually. Consider placing the camera in vertical position, then take multiple AEB shots and rotate the drone after each shot, making sure you have 1/3 - 1/2 image overlap for post-processing to work.

  • @JamesParkerPhotography

    Thanks! What about flying when there are helicopters or other manned aircraft? I'd assume Iceland has laws that prohibit operating UAVs in proximity to manned aircraft like here in the U.S.

    • @JVNPhoto
      @JVNPhoto  Před rokem

      The rules aren't as strict here but when there's manned aircraft around, you are to give way to them. They always have priority over any unmanned traffic. It's not banned completely. Other than that there's a rule that prohibits flying 120 metres above the ground (takeoff point) and you're not to fly near airports or airstrips.

  • @dwisniak
    @dwisniak Před rokem +1

    Great information.
    How can a mid-air collision with other drones be prevented? I assume that most drones don't have beacon lights.
    Also, how did you land it? is there enough light on the ground? did you use a landing pad?
    Thanks

    • @JVNPhoto
      @JVNPhoto  Před rokem +2

      Good question! During the day it's pretty much impossible to see the drone against the landscape, even if you would have strobes. At night, you can easily see it. I haven't been in any near collisions at night and always keep my distance from others. I take off and land by hand. I don't use a landing pad.

    • @bartjes2509
      @bartjes2509 Před 11 měsíci

      In 2021 I noticed that when it gets dark, the helicopters and light aircraft will leave until first light. Also many people will leave. There is less chance of a collision that way

    Hello, I don't think I found the answer in the video but can we deactivate the obstacle detectors (especially from below) to avoid a fly away if they melt (which could simulate an obstacle). Thanks

    • @JVNPhoto
      @JVNPhoto  Před rokem +1

      The quickest and easiest way to deactivate obstacle avoidance is to switch to Sport mode.

    • @pierrelpt3992
      @pierrelpt3992 Před rokem

      @@JVNPhoto Thank you, but I think that even in sport mode the detectors below remain activated (for landing) and it is these who will melt first.

    • @JVNPhoto
      @JVNPhoto  Před rokem +1

      To my knowledge those can not be disabled. If they melt, you're already way too close anyway.

    • @youknowwho7223
      @youknowwho7223 Před rokem +3

      You're talking about the downward vision positioning system. To deactivate it, enter the camera view while the drone being connected. Click "...", →Visual navigation settings, →Advanced settings, →Disable vision positioning. But need to be careful for with the system deactivated, the drone may drift by itself and won't automatically slow down while landing. You'll need to control the lever pianissimoly. The first time I deactivated it, the drone heavily slapped on the ground with a vertical speed of 3m/s, I wouldn't say it crashed, but wasn't an elegant landing XD
