I like Mustangs, always have, owned 3 of them. But bringing a Mustang against a Corvette.... Well, I've always like Corvettes, have owned 4 of them, and it takes an expensive car to beat a Corvette. The C5 Corvette is currently to most bang for your buck, you can get. Nothing runs harder for less, unless it was purpose built to do so. I've wanted a Cobra (Shelby Style) all my life, but I bought a low mileage C5 convertible, for thousands less, and it's got cruise control, air conditioning, and a good stereo.
A tune is typically changing variables in the Engine Control Unit to optimize an engine's air to fuel ratio for better combustion. Ignition, fuel delivery, intake and exhaust duration (on engines that support it), etc. Engines are typically tuned to be "safe" from the factory, delivering more fuel or less aggressive ignition, so you can get more power or even better fuel economy out of a car just by tuning it.
I dont know why everyone has to argue about which company or brand of cars is better, buy what you like and improve on it - thats what makes it fun. Both these cars are pretty sick. they are special in their own ways.
I have a 2005 vette. I have owned Mustangs in the past. As old fogies, the Vette is the smoothest, quickest I have owned. But I do appreciate the Mustang sound.
Stock for stock, the n/a Chevy motors have outrun the Fords. I've owned both and I can back that up. The Mustang was never meant as competition for the Corvette, only for the Camaro/Transam. Other than pure DragRacing, the Mustang/Camaro/Transam were never potential supercars. The large frame designs just didn't have the potential of the Corvette. Besides the cheap interior, the Corvette is tough to beat dollar for dollar for an all around performer. I would throw $10k in mods at a Corvette before a Mustang/Camaro/Transam...they just aren't worth it.
The corvette is one (or maybe two) steps above in the ladder of performance when compared to Cobras/ZL1s/Trans Am. Back in those times the only other muscle car rival of the Corvette was the Vjper...
@lemans405 yup...people just mistake the roof with the z06 and didnt know they made fixed roof corvettes before the z06 came out, theyre pretty rare actually.
@JeffYaddow The Corvette has always been a sports car. It has always been since its creation. Thats why it has the title "America's Sports Car" The only time it shared the "Muscle car" image was the 70's
You could see this coming from the mod list. Its a H/C vette vs. an I/E cobra with upped boost and a tune. They could cost the same amount though, cam is only $300 and CNC heads can be had for $1k or less.
@RandyTilly13 Its a sports car. just because a Corvette has a big displacement V8 doesn't make it a muscle car. It has 2 seats, Independent rear suspension and is super lightweight. That makes it a sports car by text book terms.
You are correct, they respond to boost very well. Specifically, the 4v cobra motors with the correct cams respond well. What is also true is the LS motors with the correct heads also respond very well to boost, so it's not necessarily an advantage. The 2JZ Supra motor responds very well to boost, but nobody in their right mind is about to say that the 2JZ is better than the LS or 4v motors.
@RandyTilly13 corvettes are not muscle cars, they are sports cars. plus the corvette has a bigger engine than the 4.6 so a supercharger makes up for the lack of displacement.
yeah, there is a video of a stock LS1 6speed Vette getting over 30mpgs on the highway..thats amazing considering what times it can run in the 1/4 and the power it can produce
I have a Vortech C5Z. And I didn't mean to say a H/C car can't be used as a daily driver, all the things you said are very true. It's just a little but harder in traffic, and I live in California. I would never pass smog and be able to use a H/C car on the streets without getting pulled over every 50 feet. Starting to wonder why I even live here..
only the 03 cobra used the cast iron block, the 96-98 cobra used aluminum, 99/01 used aluminum, 03/04 mach one used aluminum. And the ford 4v dohc motors are very comparable to the ls1, obviously in my opinion they are better. Lighter, make close to the same power and have a forged crank.
The New GT500 has a Bigger Stroke and Bored out engine. Its light weight. its a DOHC witch allows more Fuel. And to top it off a 3L Whipple Supercharger. if your mustang says SVT or SHELBY dont mess with it
Turbo 4 cylinders can make over 662 hp, and turbo 2 rotor rotary motors can make more as well, so that new 4 cam 5.8 is nothing special when it comes to small displacement and big hp.
@wignigeater my father is a professional painter and enjoys it so the painting doesnt bother me. Cracks are a bitch but can be fixed. Pushrods are outdated but still work ok. Sure there are better designs but the LS7 seems to do just fine. I will admit the new 5.0 is a sweet ride as are the newer gt500's
eff this and eff that! haha people are great. i have a virtually stock 00' frc vette and an 05' mustang gt with a 60mm turbo. the mustang is more fun around town, i can take a buddy and two girls to the beach, its faster from a roll or dig and in total i have less than 5k in aftermarket including dyno tuning. plus the vette chassis feels like a wet squeezing noodle compared to the s197. so don't discount the potential in that pony car. but when I'm feeling the need for serious shenanigans i grab the chevy keys. don't hate, buy both and appreciate.
oh dear toms jealous. i take it you don't own either of these cars. check out my channel, you can see me driving my c5 frc at buttonwillow raceway for the first time as well as a warm up video of my 05 stang while the project was nearing completion. that video has a parts list with the cost of each component that i had to buy to support the turbocharger. i do my own fabrication so that was free, but time consuming. if you spend 5 grand on stainless tubing, a turbo, and some hoses, you're about as dumb as tom here. but what do i know I'm just the guy who owns both these great cars.
Oh yes, huge difference.. The lobes on the cam increase the time the intake port and exhaust port is open and the heads will make them open farther for more air.. simple.. more air, more fuel, more power ;)
@trevinboy Then the price vs price will be insane. A used cobra is more than a used C5. Then you want to have ford fiberglass it, put wider tires, and a 5.0 in it? A new mustang 5.0 cant beat a C5 vette. You would have to supercharge the stang. Then its ss vs na which is back where we started
maybe, but you can't really have a H/C car as a daily driver. You can drive a Vette with the most basic A&A kit everyday and still have around 650 rwhp.
i was comparing the the engine in the GT500 to that of the ZR1, just because everybody keeps saying ford needs power adders and still makes less power, so i was pointing out a fact that hurts lol a turbo 4 cylinder with that much power is a ticking time bomb and how much boost would that take well over 30+ lbs, were as the GT500 is on a conservative tune with 15lbs and is perfecct for daily driving.
well just so you know its fairly easy to see gains of 150hp with a good head and cam swap on these things. any ls1/ls6 corvette with a head and cam swap will eat a bolt on pulley cobra
For those of you who say corvette is better, do the math: 5.7 liters Vs. 4.6 liters. Now take ford's 5.4 L lightning engine and put it in the cobra (aka the 2000 cobra R), then race the two. Ford would win easily...
@KShotts I have seen LS1 engines with high lift comp cam, LS5 intake and heads, exhaust and tune put down 450wrhp so it is conceivable given that the cobra weighs bout 350lbs more. The LS1 is an easily modded engine N/A. But i'm like you, we really don't know enough about these to cars to make a fair judgement. I've come across some extremely strong terminator cobras with just pulley and tune.
This is about muscle car, Mr. Einestein, not European sports car. By the way, if I was talking about European sports car, I'd rather have Ferrari 458 Italia than an E55 AMG.
It has more to do with power/weight and CD when looking into MPG. I can get 28-30mpg on the freeway in my c5z going 65-70. OHC engines are heavier and the extra weight has a higher CoG. OHC and OHV engines have both been around for over 100 years..
@foolongtea You got that right. Over 60 years of development went into the LS series. while ford went with the 4 valve per cylinders and multi cams Chevy stuck with the tried and tested 2 vpc V8's And they are way more reliable easier to add power to. get better MPG's
heads and cams only?? that 99 is fast as hell. I know heads and cams make a car sound mean as hell but i didnt know they made that much of a difference as far as performance goes.
@1blackdeath51501 And mustang didnt really sell out with the V6 you could get a v6 the day the Mustang first rolled off the assembly line... its not like they had V8s for a while then just randomly came out with a V6......?? Besides what does your comment have to with what I said.. What am I supposed to "give up"?? I wasnt arguing about anything just said I would rather have the stang plus its worth more.
I think the final dyno numbers were 480 rwhp and 420 trq at least that was the dyno sheet that I saw on the car the only reason I didnt buy it was the third gear syncro was shot and the ac didnt work the guy that had it bought it off the guy driving it in this video and he totaly screwed the car up he let some hack that didnt know his ass from a hole in the ground re-tune the car and it ran ok when I drove it but it felt like the car had a lot more in it.
The LS6 bottom end has been used since 2001. Not that it matters, besides the 03 Cobra motors the LT1 and LS1 could put out more power on the stock bottom end anyway. I asked you a simple question. Why do you think the ford motors are better?
@IDontHateOnCars in the video it says "stock motor".. then right below it, it says heads/cams which means it has aftermarket heads/cams (CAM, since it only has one cam..DURR). what dont you understand?
Something doesn't add up here. Cobra driver doesn't know what he's doing, isn't really pullied (that blower is pretty quiet) or vette has more mods than listed.
I would take the Stang over the Vette any day.. Worth alot more too! They sell around 20K where I live and in the area and I just bought a 2000 C5 Vette with 70K miles. manual. full exhaust. etc in really nice condition for 7500. Only reason I bought the vette is cuz I cant afford a Terminator lol
dont know what yall think is going on, but that vette is not just shitting on the cobra, the first run after the corner they aren't racing cause the cobra doesnt pull like it does later, and then in the following two races they are about evenly matched till the corvettes aerodynamics win out . . .corvette then looks like it pulls away but if you listen you can hear the mustang's RPM dropping like mad cause he lets go after the corvette catches up btw im a vette guy, saying theyre bout even
dude all the 4.6 dohc 4v motors ford used from 96-04 had a forged crank except the 03/04 cobra had ALL forged internals. The lt1 or ls1 of the same years DID NOT come with anything forged. Its about time chevy finally decided to put a forged crank in the ls6 LOL little late don't you think? haha
fast cartek ride....which package did you get for the h/c combo? i have a lingenfelter 383 and am going to ship my car to them for a better set of cnc heads and a cam swap...
Why do you think they are better? They are not lighter, even a AL 4.6 block has a dry weight of 180 compared to a LS blocks dry weight of 105. If you're comparing N/A motors they make FAR less power, the LS6 motors have a forged crank as well. Only the Cobra motors have the forged cranks, the 2V motors do not, but it doesn't matter when you're comparing N/A motors.
have you seen chevy's line up? the only car that can actually compete with something on the road would be the corvette. then the next best thing is the zl1 and it can run with a slight few of european car's and get an average of 14mpg (fueleconomygov)
gtx-1 was a $50k upgrade on the GT, which started at around $100k, as did the zr1 so at least thats an even playing field, a field the zr1 won. Add 50k to a zr1 and you will once again have more power than the gtx-1, so lets talk racing. both cars are gonna be a hand full, but the gtx-1 had its roof removed which will hurt its speed compared to zr1, true mid engine has is nice but corvette is fine at 52/48, i love both the cars and would love to see the race but money is on zr1 in this field too
Dont want to burst your bubble but you might've missed the intro title that says "99 corvette C5, stock motor, heads/cam", do you know what heads/cam means? I wouldn't think so since you cant spell "imagine" or write a complete sentence with the correct punctuation.
the nissans and hondas comment came from you saying that vettes arent a muscle car. indeed they are a muscle car...considering they have a 505 hp V8, and a chevy logo..pretty much makes them a muscle car. your mustang is a muscle car. to me, anything that is domestic (ford, chevy, dodge) along the lines of a sport car, is muscle.
Either the vette lied about the mods or the stang didnt know what he was doing the race shouldve been closer than that with the mods of the cobra. But the readiding said the vette had a stock motor then it said heads and cam did it mean the whole engine was stock or did it have heads and cams because if he had heads and cams then it wasnt stock that stuff makes a world a difference but sweet pull from the vette American Muscle all the way
If he(anyone) put a bigger pulley on a supercharged engine. He(they) are an idiot. No "tune" in the world(in that particular mustang) would have beaten that C-5.I am guessing a "stock 350" with serious internal work and tranny. That was a quick 99' 500+ hp?IThat had to be a 12 mid 11 vette you heard it chirpn...... drag slicks? high 10 sec car..
The 2000 Cobra R motor is a naturally aspirated engine from a Lincoln Navigator. It's not a supercharged "Lightning engine" Go to sleep little boy, it's a school night.
haha i love this video considering this C5 vette, not even a Z51 or Z06, only has a cam/headers/exhaust going up against this supercharged pony...and WINNING. this is why i love vettes. easily modded engines, affordable, and downright the best american muscle car ever made. i hope that stang likes LS1 exhaust fumes...get use to it.
2 things I love. The whine of a supercharger. The sound of an LS Motor
I got both and love it! Right on bro
The cobra is supercharged so you can hear it while it loses
best comment on CZcams ever.
@@Nick-ie1ry it really is almost a decade later.
The Vette is one American car that the entire world has to give credit to! Monsters!
Where did they fit the extra "Cams" in the C5? The trunk somewhere?? lol

yeah heads and cam on ls1/ls6 make a huge difference. a good head and cam package will give around 150 more horsepower with a proper tune
I dont know why everyone has to argue about which company or brand of cars is better, buy what you like and improve on it - thats what makes it fun. Both these cars are pretty sick. they are special in their own ways.

the snake stock could beat a c5, not a z06, 3.9 0-60

My vette in video dynoed at 505rwhp forgot the rwtq..... Have to find old dyno sheets. Loved that car but love my 2008 Z06 more.
quick C5....nice
Your right they dont, but they do need alot of extra displacement. 4 cams 32 valves all that doesnt count as displacement.
The New GT500 has a Bigger Stroke and Bored out engine. Its light weight. its a DOHC witch allows more Fuel. And to top it off a 3L Whipple Supercharger. if your mustang says SVT or SHELBY dont mess with it
@jakev1985 Hey, the C5 Z06 has badges and rear brake ducks. This just looks to be a C5 FRC with Z06 rims.
@jkimbell1212 I think the call that "Chirping the tires". Turbo car wouldnt be loud like that also out the exhaust either.

scott m Wondering how you got a turbo stang to pass emmisions in Cali. Hrmmmmmm
it doesn't have to ;) there also are no cats
+scott m my buddy had a 94 turbo 5.0 shit was scary fast. made me repeat mustangs
carteck head and cam package also will give the car an extra 150hp, hence why the lightweight corvette won
Oh yes, huge difference.. The lobes on the cam increase the time the intake port and exhaust port is open and the heads will make them open farther for more air..
simple.. more air, more fuel, more power ;)
LoL this is the exact vid that made me want a 99FRC which I got in 04 .... miss that car...
I like how it says "stock motor" followed by "heads & cam". If the heads and cam are different its not a stock motor.

Heads cam c5 vs pulley cobra, it's just a cobra not a terminator, c5 will walk it ever time mainly because it's lighter.
+Michael Montgomery It clearly says 03 Cobra with a pulley. That's a terminator.
+Michael Montgomery 03 cobra was the original terminator
Ya!! Lol
Lmao that Vette is anything but stock, it pulled the front end up 5 inches every time he stepped on it.

i always loved the argument LSs on motor couldnt hang with pullied terminators from a roll. guess this is an illusion.

the Vette was normally aspirated I almost bought that car hes in Balltimore the guy driving it is a state trooper

I dont really read much about the newer motors, I'm talking more of a LS1 time period. The numbers the coyote puts out are nice.

fast cartek ride....which package did you get for the h/c combo? i have a lingenfelter 383 and am going to ship my car to them for a better set of cnc heads and a cam swap...
Add 50k to a zr1 and you will once again have more power than the gtx-1, so lets talk racing. both cars are gonna be a hand full, but the gtx-1 had its roof removed which will hurt its speed compared to zr1, true mid engine has is nice but corvette is fine at 52/48, i love both the cars and would love to see the race but money is on zr1 in this field too
@lemans405 no its the c5 z06
I would wipe a cobras ass in my c5 too
Lool
thafactor24 I HAVE A c5 TO AND I LOVE TO EAT COBRAS for breakfast.
Jamal Holloway before I got my c5 I was wiping cobras ass with my 01 camaro ss😀
Dont want to burst your bubble but you might've missed the intro title that says "99 corvette C5, stock motor, heads/cam", do you know what heads/cam means? I wouldn't think so since you cant spell "imagine" or write a complete sentence with the correct punctuation.
the nissans and hondas comment came from you saying that vettes arent a muscle car. indeed they are a muscle car...considering they have a 505 hp V8, and a chevy logo..pretty much makes them a muscle car. your mustang is a muscle car. to me, anything that is domestic (ford, chevy, dodge) along the lines of a sport car, is muscle.
what mads make it a "Cartek"? is it a 1/4 mile setup or road-race setup?
5.0 dual overhead cam. And check out definition to displacement lol
what exactly is a tune? does that deal with the timing of the motor?
Either the vette lied about the mods or the stang didnt know what he was doing the race shouldve been closer than that with the mods of the cobra. But the readiding said the vette had a stock motor then it said heads and cam did it mean the whole engine was stock or did it have heads and cams because if he had heads and cams then it wasnt stock that stuff makes a world a difference but sweet pull from the vette American Muscle all the way
@blown06tc
yup...heads and a cam will go a long way.
This cobra may have had bigger pulley but it wasnt tuned you can tell
If he(anyone) put a bigger pulley on a supercharged engine. He(they) are an idiot. No "tune" in the world(in that particular mustang) would have beaten that C-5.I am guessing a "stock 350" with serious internal work and tranny. That was a quick 99' 500+ hp?IThat had to be a 12 mid 11 vette you heard it chirpn...... drag slicks? high 10 sec car..
Jonathan Avalos Who puts bigger pulley's on cars? hahah
Cmon guys let's get real, NOT stock lol
Beautiful cars!
Wow my video still up? Lmao miss that vette.....
The point of my comment was to mock his in order to emphasize the fact that it was pointless and unnecessary to say what he said.
The 2000 Cobra R motor is a naturally aspirated engine from a Lincoln Navigator. It's not a supercharged "Lightning engine"
Go to sleep little boy, it's a school night.
Haha that vette's only downfall is no traction! Chevy ftw
The Cobra is too heavy to fuk with a H/C/I/E c5 z06...The Cobra needs at least a ported stock supercharger + supporting mods.
haha i love this video considering this C5 vette, not even a Z51 or Z06, only has a cam/headers/exhaust going up against this supercharged pony...and WINNING. this is why i love vettes. easily modded engines, affordable, and downright the best american muscle car ever made. i hope that stang likes LS1 exhaust fumes...get use to it.
C5 didnt have a z51 option
i think he just meant stock rotating assembly
