As others have said. The guy in the front seat is the gunner and weapons guy. His helmet controls the cannon. The guy in the back pilots the craft as any helicopter pilot does.
except most of the time the pilot owns the gun. He has the same helmet system in the back. The CPG up front mainly runs the TSD/TADS(the Big ass camera system on the nose) and hellfire missiles. Both crewmen are fully rated to fly the aircraft and it can be flown from either seat incase one of the crew is incapacitated. Fun fact, the guy up front is the more experienced of the two aircrew and technically commands the aircraft.

When I was a tanker just a year ago, my most memorable moment with an Apache was when my platoon of 4 tanks were in a convoy to our training area, an Apache decided to do a fly by right beside us going in the same direction we were going. The pilot was clear as day and we all waved at each other. That helicopter had to be just 30 feet off the ground during the flyby.

Eh, they were modern for their time, now, not so much. Attack helicopters are not really great for much when we have stealth jets like the F22 and F35. As well as ground vehicle systems with modern SAMs and SSMs. Ukraine has been a great proving ground for how useless tanks and nothing-less-than-modern aircraft are in a modern battle. The most deadly and effective weapons against armor have been NLAWs and Javelins, along with other TOWs, SSMs, and SAMs. Then there is the most deadly and effective weapons of all the weapons, small suicide drones and mortar dropping drones. Drones that can be had at walmart for a few hundred dollars, taking down multi-million dollar attack helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-24, lmfao. Attack helicopters are obsolete trash in a modern war.
You must be new to the yt channels. People have been appreciating weapons of mass killing since the beginning of weapons development in human history. Apache has been mentioned in thousands of videos along with many other weapons with much love and propaganda. This isn't new.
Half of the stuff said here ain’t true. The helicopter is controlled 100% of the time by the cyclic and collective in the (usually) backseat pilot. It never ‘goes where the pilot looks.’ That’s the pilots hand-eye coordination at work, kind of how when riding a motorcycle you look where you want to go and you naturally make the subconscious adjustments to go there. What IS controlled by the helmet mounted sight (IHADSS is the proper term) are the sensors like the FLIR and the night vision so they can operate at night. They can also align weapons to the sight, so they look at something, designate it, and then use that target point to direct weapons onto it. And yes, the gun can be slaved to the helmet so you can shoot what you look at. It’s a very cool piece of kit without having to exaggerate its capabilities.
I think you’re missing the point of it. The dude was talking about how many insane pieces of technology and engineering greatness goes into making this machine, and wasn’t being 100% accurate with it.
I had a religious experience seeing an Apache up close for the first time recently. You have to see one in person to really appreciate how much of an absolute engineering marvel of destruction it is.
Just an unbelievable amount of sensors and complicated shit that it is almost overwhelming. The f-35 raptor uses over 1.5 million lines of code and I think the Apache is close, it’s crazy. 500 million dollars per unit or more plus literally billions even trillions on development

My stepdad was a helicopter mechanic in the army and he hates apaches with a passion. He says they’re pieces of shit. Something is always broken on them and they have to be worked on after almost every flight

When I was a tanker just a year ago, my most memorable moment with an Apache was when my platoon of 4 tanks were in a convoy to our training area, an Apache decided to do a fly by right beside us going in the same direction we were going. The pilot was clear as day and we all waved at each other. That helicopter had to be just 30 feet off the ground during the flyby.
I can almost hear the war drums and a faint electric guitar solo just reading this.

Eh, they were modern for their time, now, not so much. Attack helicopters are not really great for much when we have stealth jets like the F22 and F35. As well as ground vehicle systems with modern SAMs and SSMs. Ukraine has been a great proving ground for how useless tanks and nothing-less-than-modern aircraft are in a modern battle. The most deadly and effective weapons against armor have been NLAWs and Javelins, along with other TOWs, SSMs, and SAMs. Then there is the most deadly and effective weapons of all the weapons, small suicide drones and mortar dropping drones.
Drones that can be had at walmart for a few hundred dollars, taking down multi-million dollar attack helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-24, lmfao.
Attack helicopters are obsolete trash in a modern war.

The helicopter is controlled 100% of the time by the cyclic and collective in the (usually) backseat pilot. It never ‘goes where the pilot looks.’ That’s the pilots hand-eye coordination at work, kind of how when riding a motorcycle you look where you want to go and you naturally make the subconscious adjustments to go there.
What IS controlled by the helmet mounted sight (IHADSS is the proper term) are the sensors like the FLIR and the night vision so they can operate at night. They can also align weapons to the sight, so they look at something, designate it, and then use that target point to direct weapons onto it.
And yes, the gun can be slaved to the helmet so you can shoot what you look at. It’s a very cool piece of kit without having to exaggerate its capabilities.

I had a religious experience seeing an Apache up close for the first time recently. You have to see one in person to really appreciate how much of an absolute engineering marvel of destruction it is.
Just an unbelievable amount of sensors and complicated shit that it is almost overwhelming. The f-35 raptor uses over 1.5 million lines of code and I think the Apache is close, it’s crazy. 500 million dollars per unit or more plus literally billions even trillions on development

The first job I had out of college was working on the test equipment for the Apache. It was bad ass in the 1980s.
