    The Skeksis and urRu aren't evil and good. They are selfish and selfless. One is motivated by ego and the desire to control while the other is motivated by altruism and the desire to serve. This is why the Skeksis are emotional and the urRu are meditative, as well as why the Skeksis act whereas the urRu observe, and Jim Henson specifies this in interviews from the time of the film's release. The whole notion of good and evil is the result of dichotomous thinking and Jim was showing that dichotomies and dualities were harmful and lead to psychological, social, and spiritual imbalance. That is why everything in Thra is based on the number three. Aughra has three eyes, there are three suns, there are three Great Conjunctions, etc., and hence the proliferation of triunic symbolism.

    • @CountOrlok22
      @CountOrlok22 Před 5 lety +28

      Evil does not exist. The belief in evil is a misidentification resultant of defective perception and cognition just as the actions which are the subject of such misidentification are. Jim was explicit in the premise that the Skeksis and urRu are not evil and good. If they were, they could not have integrated into a higher being, which represents a harmonious co-existence of the individual and the collective, impulsion and compulsion, meditation and spontaneity. It's basic Yin-Yang which is why Henson described them as light and dark and as being both male and female.

    • @MeloraCarabas
      @MeloraCarabas Před 5 lety +37

      Indeed.
      The Urskeks were split into extremes. Both extremes were unbalanced and therefore they started to perish over time.
      Good and evil are vague notions better described with the imbalanced use of aggression and exploitation or when beings actually have the empathy to help one another.
      Neither side displayed any empathy. The Skeksis were aggressive, but the urRu were passive. Both so extreme that the Skeksis harmed other beings and the urRu never helped to protect anyone. Both were content to just keep themselves safe.
      Only when they became urSkeks again they felt any urge to repair the damage they did on the world.

      Social Darwinism is the belief in the elimination of progressive policies, inclusion and integration, and social programs that benefit the disadvantaged. This aversion to helping others is based on the misnomer that evolutionary traits favour the most strong and the most capable. Firstly, this is not actually how evolution functions (evolution favours diversification and those that are most able to adapt to their environment), and secondly, nothing I have said supports Social Darwinism. Contrary to that assertion, Social Darwinism is founded on conservatism, imperialism, free market capitalism, and the notion that exploitation is natural and ethical.
      As for the Holocaust, it has nothing to do with anything, so even bringing it up is just an attempt to derail the conversation via Godwin's Law (and this early in the discussion displays a real lack of perspective). The Skeksis consume Gelfling in order to sustain their physical selves and prolong their lives. That is not the same as trying to annihilate entire peoples based on a false notion (yet another dichotomy) of inferior/superior and an intolerance and hatred of their race, religion, or culture. People eat meat. They eat meat by choice. It isn't even essential to their survival. Yet the Skeksis believe that consuming essence will ensure their survival. Would you categorize all omnivores as being evil for the consumption of sentient life forms? Of course not. The Skeksis are out of balance, and they are addicted to the Crystal which has been corrupted, not unlike Gollum is to the One Ring, and this addiction warps their sense of ethics. That is not a justification for their actions, because their actions are destructive and unnecessary, but they are unable to see that because of their dependency upon the Crystal and upon essence.

    Skeksil/UrSol is Darkheart. He was unstable from the start, very isolated compared to his sibling ideas. Raunip could see the darkness and homed in on Darkheart because he was easiest to pick on, then Gyr unintentionally invaded Darkhearts personal information and triggered him into a meltdown which caused the Chamberlain to benefit nobody but himself. His humming is a mental tick from his broken song, he cant sing like his Urru counterpart, who chants with purpose.

    • @rosesweetcharlotte
      @rosesweetcharlotte Před 4 lety +5

      There have been quite a few ideas floating around. For years, it was accepted that Dark Heart was likely the Skeksis who immediately killed their Mystic counterpart/themselves. However, since the series, many have proposed other urSkeks, like the one who was the Chamberlain, SoSu, and especially MalVar and the Mariner/Swimmer. Given her actions in the novel, I think skekSa is an especially interesting possibility.

    Something I can tell you is the Skeksis and Mystics being the dark and light halves of one being was a direct analogy of Jim Henson. It was his idea to take the troll (Mystic) drawing from Brian Froud, and ask him to create an "evil" counterpart.
    Of course it represented *much* more than one individual, but Jim did have a very dark side. You can see the confliction (but always trying to do what's right) with his miniature avatar, Kermit. I was 10 years old when Jim died. It was, and still is the only celebrity I ever cried over.

    The thing that has befuddled me for the longest time, is why don't the Urskeks look like an amalgamation of the two halves? The Skeksis and Mystics share similar aspects, but the Urskeks are like spindly, (defying the laws of gravity) spaghetti haired Duros from Star Wars. Not read the comics but from interviews and the film my take was slightly different. The rest of the urSkeks had achieved enlightenment and transcended (gone post physical) the ones that journeyed to Thra however had failed to achieve this and they were seeking out the crystal to try and artificially go post physical by burning out their imperfections. At the end of the film after being reunited their combined forms experience as separate halves allowed them to achieve enlightenment and they were able to go post physical and rejoin their race.

Augra became ‘addicted’ to watching the stars, in that way, she was not really there for Thra. Her ‘absense’ made the Skeksis the ones having access to the crystal. Originally coming through the 3 suns at the 1st conjunction, they were not creatures of thra, while Augra is Thra as a living creature. Their interaction with the crystal is different and the effect of the crystal on them is different. They do not know everything about Thra. So they make ‘mistakes’. And so Thra changes. Until .... dark energy (the energy of death, natural destruction) shows up because of the imbalance in their knowledge and starts ... corrupting the inbalance in order to end it. But also corrupting the Skeksis, causing them to slowly lose their immortality. And this causes them to .. start lying and the deceiving. They were not ‘bad’ until Augra became ‘absent minded’ ... or a dreamer

    The Maiar however are not physical split from individuals but rather moral factions, that is more fluid, especially in the case of Saruman becoming evil, unlike the Uru who cannot be...

      I have not yet seen a real answer to this question and I've wondered that myself. I think perhaps it created a resistance to change. The Urskeks were trying to 'repent', in a sense, by burning the darkness from within themselves. I think an analogy might be someone who was once an alcoholic suddenly missing his life as a party animal. This meant the nostalgic Urskek was not truly 'penitent' and couldn't be purged. In trying to hang onto the past, he couldn't let go of the part of himself that had gotten him banished in the first place.
