This is actually relatively common outside of influencers. A lot of products with a variety of brands can actually be traced back to one or two producers (with exceptions obviously). This is because some producers like to give the illusion of choice to make customers feel good about purchases. It also gives the specific product a range of prices. Some customers who value quality will choose the expensive options, while others may choose the inexpensive option. It doesn't matter, because it's still the same product and the producers will make money regardless. I believe Tyson (who produces primarily chicken products) does this and a lot of chicken from other brands are produced by Tyson. Though this situation is a much newer phenomenon, similar to 'ghost kitchens' where an influencer is marketing a product without actually making it themselves. Keep in mind, marketing has evolved over the years to be very deceptive, and will continue to do so until capitalism dies. It's proven to be far too effective for companies to not abuse.
Wineries do this to make off label wine that retailers can sell on the cheap. It's just leftover wine all poured together and they call it a blend. Hell they even register a company name that says something like "Made by Birdman vineyards" but then it says it was made in Manteca CA and I'm sitting there thinking Delicato is the only winery in that whole city.

I work in retail and I've done rebranding on products. It does not cost a cent more to do it... All that needs to be done is get someone in marketing that does the artwork and all that. Then the company rolls out the products in the new packaging... It's a complete rip off... Charge an extra dollar or dollar 50 and it'll be fine. This is absolutely a cash grab.
Hey Birdman, I have some insider info for how this works. Most products are manufactured by one company(1), bought in bulk by another company(2), sold to another company(3), who sells online, or brands and retails this product. Every time that there is an exchange there’s a 300% markup. Period. It’s a global standard. Manufacturers will make a product, inject their profit margin. Say the product costs $1 to make+ mfg profit margin. It’s then sold to an importer/wholesaler at $3 then to a retailer at $9. This is how drop shipping works, you are essentially an agent for a wholesaler/manufacturer, get the products super cheap, and have the manufacturer/wholesaler “drop ship” the product to the end user. Circumventing the wholesaler and or the retailer which means that you can absorb the margin of the removed parties. So yeah… I guess you could say drop shipping is legit…ish. Usually they’re shtty products that can’t afford to take up shelf space. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the pokis of the world are just doing what every other company on the planet is doing. Except they’re using their popularity/fame to promote their “branded” version of the product. The price that she’s charging probably has a lot to do with her order quantity. The “vitamin D” thing is a common thing. When you “rebrand” or “private label” a product that already exists you can often get small changes made to the product. For example, I have a client that has a pre-workout label. He found a company that manufacturers pre-workout that he likes, then contacted them told them some flavors that he would like, ordered a sample kit, whipped up a label, selected packaging, did a few runs of min order qty, and did like 600k in revenue 1.5 years later. It’s really a strait-forward process and honestly 60-80% of products are private label. There’s nothing really wrong with it imo. If you like a product and believe in it, think that it would be a value to your fan base by making a few changes and selling them the product… who’s to say that’s wrong? It’s obviously not an original product but that’s now always a bad thing. Sometimes if you get the right mfg and buy at the right quantities you can afford to sell them the same product for cheaper. If you’ve got a platform and a good idea for a product that would resonate with your fan base, it’s a great way to benefit your viewers and create a sustainable hands free retirement for yourself.
If anything it looks like Pokimane is the one that got scammed. Pokimane didn't intend to make these cookies herself in her kitchen, she paid this company to do it for her and it appears they took her money and stole a product hoping she wouldn't notice. She definitely knows now though. 😂
I'm getting that vibe too. I'm willing to bet there's really shady people that pulled her into it and if things go bad they can use the slightly less shady Poki as a scapegoat. Of course there's always the possibility this is more E-thot shenanigans as well that we can't rule out.
