Install TV LED Backlighting the “Correct Way” - LIFX Z Strips

- Why install LEDs on the back of your TV. It does not only look cool but it is good for your eyes. Bias lighting like LED backlighting help your eyes in a dark room while watching TV. If you are looking at installing LEDs on the back of your TV, it can be tricky. But by using this technique you can securely attach LEDs to the back of your TV. I was surprised how well it worked on the back of my TV. If you have installed LEDs, you know it can be tough to do the corners. LIFX shows the correct way and what I think is the best way to put led strips on a TV.

Who told you that's gaffer tape?because what you described & what it appears to be is masking tape for painters and decorators. Gaffer tape contains cotton thread and is very heavy duty which leaves loads of residue
It is blue gaffers tape. I have chroma green gaffers tape. I am been in the lighting industry for 25 plus years. Good gaffers does not leave a ton of residue. Good gaffers tape leaves no residue. That is why you can wrap a cable in it, tour the world with it and be able to peel it off and not leave a bit of residue. That is why it is used in the industry. It l doesn’t bake on like duct tape or get gooey like electrical tape. Enough to show I might actually know what I am talking about. This stuff has grown on trees through out my career and I have so much of it lying around.

Wonderful video, we are redoing our frontroom this weekend. My husband suggested we add led behind the TV. We will for sure be using this style.
My husband has installed a led strip in our bedroom thats connected to a backup battery bank that's charged by solar. Last 3 years we have never used the over head lights in the room. He found them at Walmart on clearance for 3 dollars he bought 6 packs. Led strips is the way to go for sure. We will be buying the strips you recommended. Thank you for a great video

Craig, I went with the Govee Immersion (model H6199) that came with flexible corners which I looped to make the corners and it worked great. The Govee Immersion has a 1080p camera to “look” at your TV and mimic the colors on it as the back light. Great product for the money and I installed it on my living room and bedroom TVs. Makes for a wonderful experience and has different modes and is a smart device compatible with Alexa and Google.
I would be interested in your opinion of the Govee Immersion H6199.
I currently have an LED strip along the entire top/back edge of the furniture the TV is sitting on (can’t wall mount) and I cheated and put a smart bulb behind the TV. (Both Gosund, of course! LOL) I’ve never been 100% happy with the bulb part and might try this. I have more LED strip. The TV is only a 32” so it shouldn’t be too difficult. I’ll share my results when completed! Oh, production quality has gotten even better! Congrats!

great guide, detailed and helps those who have never done it before to try it the best way. I know I have installed them the "wrong" way and ended up taping almost every inch of the LED's to keep them down.
I had not come across the LIFX strip before as have bought a couple of the Nanoleaf led strip and like those. Put one in the back of a tv and instead of trying to stick directly on the back of the tv I bought some sticky clips that have a loop style clip and ran the strip thru the clips and faced the light out. Seemed to work well and did not have to worry about bending the strip as the clips held it in the back of the tv.

So glad you made this. I've been wanting to do this, but haven't found good guidance on this and in particular on corners. Question though: why wouldn't you put the terminal ends at a corner to have one less loop?
You are only supposed cut LIFX strips in certain spots. With some other brands I would attempt it. Plus I don’t think your average consumer is going to even consider cutting strips and putting on corners. No way my wife would do that, but she would do what I did since it does not involve cutting. I would be more open to cutting and do corners on some of the solid color non addressable LEDs strips or an RGB set That can easily be connected. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

Great step-by-step guide on how to best install LED strip light, I've been looking at installing some onto my work desk/monitor set up and you've certainly given me some valuable pointers on what not to do 🙂🙂

Just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying it Craig. The family Christmas present this year is a 75" TCL 645 and I'm looking to add a bias light. Your tutorial is great info but there's a couple of things I'm having trouble getting details on. I'm not going full smart home, at least not yet, and to my mind the two things I'd like my bias light to do is.....
1- Resume the last brightness setting the strip was at when it last turned off. And
2- Adjust brightness based on the room's ambient light. 2 is more optional but I really prefer not to have to futz with the light every single time I turn the screen on.
Can you fill me in please? Much appreciated.

Great video and advice - I only use Nanoleaf strips so far and they seem very stiff to even attempt looping. Maybe a different brand but I want them Thread-enabled!
You should cut them and thread on a 90 degree connector. Looks Much better than this method because the loop method will make the light stronger at the corners

Hi Craig, yes I am using LIFX LED strips on my TV. I actually bought the LIFX Z TV 1 metre strip to start with and added metre extensions, but now realise their is no difference with the regular 2 metre starter pack which are cheaper. Cheers from New Zealand

I’m with you about the lighting, I hate harsh lighting as well. It is very uncomfortable for the eyes. I also prefer lamps and ambient lighting. Lighting is everything for everything. I have wanted to use these lights myself, but have been a little bit intimidated to install, or rather wasn’t sure how to install. Thank you for showing how to do this. I am more willing to try it now.

IMHO soldering short cables for the corners is the best way to do this. No stress on the strips and no hot spots. I know not everyone can do that, but if you have the ability, that's what I would do. Also I know there are 90° clips that can be used instead of soldering. Can't speak to their quality or ease of use though.
One final note, 3M VHB tape works way better than most of the double sided tapes included with the various strips, especially for surfaces that are tough to stick to.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think it is a great solution to do connectors if someone is comfortable with it. The only thing I would add, is pay attention to the type of LED your cutting. LIFX has 3 safe cutting points that are not convenient. I think solid strips without zones help too. I haven’t tried it with any strips with my main ones being LIFX. Thanks for the tape suggest and connector suggestion. Good stuff.

When i painted my hang-out room a darker color last year, it didn't cross my mind that it would effect the brightness of the tv led lights. It was nice n bright before i painted. Now it doesn't look as bright. Anyway , great tips.. Sending you out some NorCal love.

Craig, I want to put LED light around my accent wall but I don’t want to loop them around the corners, do you recommend any lights that I can cut and connected to corner connectors?
I don’t have any particular brands to look for. I would recommend something that has one solid zone and is not multiple zones. The solid strips tend to be easier to cut and join back together. Ideally I would try to get something with white LEDs in it. But the RGB ones tend to be easier to cut in half for 10 connectors for them. When it comes to connectors make sure it is the right width in millimeters next to the strips you have. They have some great connector options I do not require any soldering. I hope this helps. Might give this a go, I'll start on my gaming pc with it's smaller 27 inch monitor and if it works well I'll add another to my 52 inch tv in the lounge room.
I only play games and watch movies in dark rooms and have done for 20+ years, But I guess now that I am middle aged, I can't get away with it as much anymore.
Start to get migraines from eye strain and I also dislike direct overhead lighting, It's not only too bright but ruins the game or movie from reflections on screen.
Yeah, these may be helpful for you. I am feeling my eyes go a bit. Hopefully this helps with the migraines. Overhead light stinks, lamps and backlighting is the way.

Lifx are fantastic but I wish they’d bloody release products to actually help / aid fitting of their products- esp power extension cables and garden related lights - and that they actually keep their products in stock

Are there ANY LED lights that actually save the color you want? Ive bought 2 different ones from Amazon and every time you turn the TV back on it defaults to the flashing through all the lights and you have to manually pick your choice of color

Looks like you cut some strips. What did you use to connect peices together? Any other accessory needed, or all included in the box? Does box include any cut connectors?
Not one strip was cut. I never cut strips unless I have to. The are linked together, looped at the corners and stuck on with the double stick on the back. Buy a starter kit and add extensions.

one end is a 4 pin male connector with the end of the first strip being the female 4pin connector

I don’t know about the remote function. I would look at Goovee. They have a large variety of products. Some use just remotes.

90° LED elbows are superior. All you have to do is cut the LED strip and attach the elbow. Perfect corners.
Zakota 90 degree Corners are great if the strip supports cutting in multiple areas. You can only cut and reattach about every 20”. I am all for corners if the product you use supports.
But I also want to do an approach that the majority of people will do. 90% of people will never cut their strips. They will do some weird bend corners that won’t lay flat anywhere. That is where this helps.

@@CraigsTechTalk You can only cut at about 20" if your strip is BAD for the application. For this particular application, you should buy one with 120 LED/m which will allow cutting every 5cm.
Does it look good on a TV which is placed on a stand and not wall mounted?
It would look just as good. You wouldn’t have any hardware to deal with on the back of the TV. Same effect you would just have the stand block a bit.
Thanks friend but mine don't even light up for some reason and it gets really frustrating and annoying. I've tried every possible connection with all of them but still nothing works, they did light up though one or two times but that's that. Please share your thoughts if you may 🙏
Have you tried pressing the reset button to have it check the strip. When you press that, it send a white light down the strip, identifying the strip.
@@CraigsTechTalk first thanks for your reply, I eventually found what the problem was and now they work just fine 🙂. The problem was that two of them were not connected properly with the right polarity.
Ugh, do you got a video where the LED strips change to color of whatever the TV is showing? So if it's grass on the corner of the TV, the LEDs on that corner would also turn green.
Maybe I'm being a bit thick here, but surely the whole purpose of using the "loop" method around corners is so that you don't have to make any cuts save one?

Hi Craig. I have leds on my TV but unlike you I used L shaped conctors from amazon. They were very cheap and saved on losing leds on the corners, plus they laid flat to the TV. My late wife loved them Colin from the UK.

Did this a year ago. I dont like how the light on the corners kind of cut out. Get L Shape connectors ,definitely better.

Its better to use corner adapters then roll the strip. Rolling the strip will cause heat and damage the strips.
Only problem is that most people would never cut them and make corner adapters. It is definitely cleaner. This is the manufacturers recommendations.
Where can I buy 12mm 4 pin L corner connectors for LIFX light strip!? Amazon doesn’t have them.
Is it true these only work with 2.4ghz? I have 1GB internet and my router has both a 2.4 and 5 ghz frequency, but it doesn't have two separate networks - it uses "Client Steering"
to determine the best frequency for a device, and I'm worried these strips won't work...
Yes, they are 2.4ghz. I am going to estimate 90% of them will be.
@@CraigsTechTalk that I would update and say the problems I was encountering were the result of not updating my iPhone to IOS 15 - once I did that, functionally with the LIFX app was restored and I didn't have any issues setting up the lights - thanks for your video!

So I have been looking into getting some backlights for an LG OLED C1 55 inch TV but our TV is on a stand at angle with both sides hitting each wall just to give you an idea of how far the back of TV is from the wall. 2 questions will I get much reflection if I was to use backlighting on the TV in this position, basically it is the only Alcove that suits the layout of our TV Room. I was looking at getting the Hue system but decided against it. Then I was looking at the Lytmi Neo HDMI 2.0 system you may of heard of these systems the LEDs sync almost perfectly with the color on the screen. I really could do with any help the system you put together looks really cool but with the systems I mentioned above you get brackets that have adhesive on them once there on you go around and attach the LEDs. It just looked easier for someone like myself who has never worked with anything like this before. I live in Ireland so there's not a great range of anything here. Basically it's by watching reviews I get to see what others are using and how each system work's. One system is about €400 the other is less than half that's the sync box ect everything you need in the one box now if you tell me in your opinion my TV is to far to get any real benefits from the backlights then I'll just scrap it. But maybe you might have another suggestion. What a great informed video you gave. Nobody cut LEDs into 1 meter lengths and used the loop. These are sold in 1 m lengths. You have no choice.

Always use a shade or something to block LEDS from direct light to the eyes.

@@CraigsTechTalk I buy a Philips TV in 2016 and the main reason is ambilight leds. Unfortunately it has only lateral leds but for the position in my house they're good enough.
LIFX lights suck. Always have to reset them.
Bias lighting: The goldfish-stocked platform shoes of the 2010s. It is designed to sell you crap and nothing more. The eyestrain myth is particularly ludicrous. Eventually you'll get sick of living in a carnival ride at night and move on to wearing bell-bottoms and wide ties.
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you concerning the eye strain "myth", Bob. I have experienced a good amount of eye strain when trying to watch a television in a dark room. I, myself, have always experienced this. Even if I don't go the route of colored background lights, I always have a lamp on elsewhere in the room.
