Interesting & inspiring experiment! Never stop exploring.

What you’re wearing, is definitely not overkill. In addition, the pigment particulates may persist in the air after use. Maybe do that in the garage in an area you can vent.

That’s a beautiful portrait. I do use a muller (from kremer) I find some pigments need to be mulled to get them to play nicely with the binder. Otherwise they’re too chalky.

I'm pretty much impressed/confused with the darkness of graphite once on paper. Fresh and wet maybe, but what about dry ? Notice that the tube said "graphite grey" but your powder raw material stated "black". I always thought that graphite was never black and looked more grey-ish than charcoal for instance.

There is a “black graphite” and a “silver graphite” at my local pigment shop. This one is PBLbk10. I did also buy a Carbon Black Pbk7, which I forgot to mention on camera. So there is actually three colors in here. But I’ve done other work without the Carbon and don’t feel I’m missing anything.

Hey Marc, thanks for sharing your experiments. Maybe I missed it but what is the quantity of pigment you're starting with? Looks like you're using a tablespoon size coffee measure and half-filling it. This suggests you're starting with a couple grams of pigment. Is that about right? Also, did the guy at Kama say anything about differences between clove oil and clove bud oil? I've read that the later is superior. ???

Cloves - not sure, I didn't look into that, just using what we had in the kitchen. Re: amount of pigment - I'm doing this 'to taste'. I put out 'some' pigment and add the binder mixture drop by drop until I get the smooth viscosity I want. It's a 'does it blend' test, rather than a scientific weight. To me, this is exactly like mixing my oils. I add cold wax medium and calcium carbonate to my oils to get impasto, and more, or less, linseed based on how much flow I need. It's just 'mix till to get the stiffness you need for whatever you're doing at the moment'. Hope that makes sense :)

@@marctaro I ordered some clove bud oil so maybe the experiment is whether I have more/less problem with mold than you :-) Explanation makes perfect sense, as your explanations always do. Thanks. BTW, I meant to mention that the methylcellulose whatever that the Kama guy recommended is a surfactant. If you've done any darkroom photography, it does the same thing as Photoflow does there. It reduces the surface tension in the water to improve flow. Traditionally people used Ox Gall in the same way. Better living through chemistry I suppose. Since you've indicated that flow is great, maybe you don't need it.
Once again you have me traveling a road I never planned to travel. I just couldn't resist. Just waiting for the clove oil to arrive 🙂
