  • In order to get a PhD in Norway, you need to pass an interview. One of the ways to succeed in interview is to be prepared to answer both common and more specific (rare) questions. Ph.D. interview questions can be found on many online websites and CZcams. But I will give an internal inside that you cannot find anywhere else. I will tell you not only about common Ph.D. interview questions, but I will also present more specific Ph.D. interview in NO questions and Ph.D. interview questions from me, personally, and my colleagues.
Your interview will be finished with a question "Do you have any questions?" and this is where you can also help yourself to stand out or maybe mess up. At the end of the video, I suggested my 5 questions to ask your future employer during the interview and an example of a bad question that you shouldn't ask. I will also explain why this question is bad.

Competence and influence in the field. Your supervisor is the only person at that stage in your career who can open doors for you. If they don't... then you will need an awful lot of luck to move forward.

Thank you for this video! I feel it`s almost like you are guiding me through the all steps into admission to the NTNU) I want to ask the only thing. In the end you mentioned that it`s best not to ask questions about information you can find on the internet and I believe that the information about Norwegian courses at the NTNU are pretty much available, so I am thinking now that maybe it´s not a very correct question to ask( What do you think?

I am glad you find it useful. Thank you for such kind words. Asking about learning Norwegian language is good as means to show your interest and plans for the future, but do not put to much time on it.

Hello Ivanna, thanks for your vidoes. They help a lot. Right now I'm trying to apply for a PhD position in Norway and I am writing a research proposal. I was wondering whether it's ok for me to contact the project supervisor before sending the documents through jobnorge or is that considered something unprofessional in Norway? I just had a couple of questions about the project. What do you think? thanks again!

If in the position his name is listed as a contact person, then it is completely fine to write and ask questions you have.

Hi Ivanna, your videos are so useful. I am waiting for an interview's result. It has been 3 weeks already.. I am so nervous. Tomorrow is the national day of Norway..should I send an email to say Happy National Day and then see the reaction of the interview team?

Another question is that before the PhD interview in the NTNU they might ask you to prepare a short presentation describing a research proposal (5-10 minutes). Do you have experience with this or maybe there is a video about what should be covered in such presentation? Thank you in advance!

    • @schmetterling4477

Read other people's research proposals, especially successful ones. Figure out what the funding agency wants to see. What is a good research proposal? It is one that a) produces relevant new results in the field and b) has a very high probability of success. Anybody can come up with the equivalent of "defeating cancer", but it has zero chance of success and that kind of proposal will immediately go into the trash, so you really have to think hard about HOW you are going to make it happen within the time and budget constraints.
