What a costume! Watching some vintage skating vids lately and it’s surprising how much more theatrical some of the costumes seem to me compared to now. I loved Michelle Kwan’s elegant ballerina like minimalism and there have been some great recent looks of course, but these kind of dramatic costumes bring me back to the joy of watching skating in the 90’s.
Looking at this some thirty three years later she's lived a roller coaster life. If this is in '86 she's 29! Man...what a beautiful woman. With a true talent. Initially married... to Dean Martin Jr. Huh? Saw a recent interview where she talks about her struggle w/depression. Hopefully she's found peace. Must say she's one athlete & figure skater who came through the fire of competition when it counted. In her case, there was no next year. That's why I admire those who delivered. All that pressure & to perform at your best. She's right at the top. ⛸️🇺🇸
Even though Roz had a 2Axel in her technical program, I still prefer Dorothy's overall. Skating isn't just 1 element; Dorothy's total package was head above the other ladies.

While I agree Roz should have won the event this year I think one factor in the judges still going with Hamill were the spins. Of the 4 women in the event- Sumners, Zayak, Fratianne, Hamill, Sumners is by far the poorest spinner of the 4. Which really stands out in comparision to Hamill who is not only the best spinner of the 4, but one of the best of all time, maybe the best non Swiss spinner ever. In amateur events Rosalynn's weak spins never seemed to hurt her, but in pro skating things like that are more important than in amateur ones. Pro events are also highly political though and Hamill being the only one out of Sumners, Zayak, Fratianne, Chin, the competitors in all major 84-88 pro events with an Oly gold had an automatic large heads up on the other. Had Sumners won in Sarajevo or Fratianne in Lake Placid it probably would be more competitive most years. Plus Hamill is a huge legend, beloved and admired by everyone, including Dick Button who basically ran all the major pro events and judging of them back then.
Sometimes I wonder how figure skating survived after the Dorothy Hamill era. She was so much better than everyone else, so graceful and easily the most beautiful woman on earth in her prime that it wasn't fair. Usually someone at that level kills their sport, (Mike Tyson being a very glaring example.)
This was so much worse than Sumners technical program, and probably even Zayak (who must have skated fairly well to beat Chin who skated decently), yet was placed 1st. It is obvious just how fixed pro events were. Dorothy could have literally gone on centre ice, taken her panties down, took a giant shit, and still been placed 1st. If I were her I would have just for fun.
Quite ridiculous this was placed above Rosalynn's clean skate that had double axels and was all around excellent. Hilarious how at the Challenge of Champioins just weeks later this routine was skated a bit better and Rosalynn's the same and Rosalynn killed her which is proof of the corrupt fix here.
You know every now and then commentators are paid to endorse another skater ... I definitely think this was one of them. Way to overly critical and blatantly aggressive.
The comments were made by Carol Heiss, who actually won Gold & Silver @ Olympics....so, she's got the creds. When Peggy Fleming did commentary it was very noticable that she was slanted toward Dorothy Hamill.. I guess it's hard to be neutral!
You are ridiculous with that comment. Seriously. Commentators do not have to excel at the sport. Just like a judge on a vocal or dance competition does not have to be an excellent singer or dancer. They just all need to be able to assess and analyze and have a broad width of knowledge.
Carol Heiss was doing a lot of negative talk about Dorothy's skating. She was trying to sell a lie very hard. I thought the performance was gorgeous & graceful. Carol even made a wince sound once when the landing was just fine..propaganda! Those marks were right on point for Dorothy!
Ridiculous comment! I LOVE Dorothy, but this was the *technical* program. Clearly you are not able to recognize the jumps or you'd understand she had very little technical content. Beautiful? Absolutely. Technical content? No.
Naw this performance sucked and was only placed 1st by reputuation. That Heiss, an extremely close personal friend of Dorothy who is heavily biased to her, even admits this, means it is irrefutably true. Notice how at the Challenge of Champions weeks later she skated better than this and Sumners skated the same or slightly worse as the same programs both did here and Sumners was scored way higher.

It's a beautiful outfit but I'm not sure how Tonya Harding was given a hard time for her outfits when Dorothy could wear THAT

I love Dorothy but this is the one of her World Pro titles I disagree with. Roz was definitely robbed this year.

I've looked high and low for a long length comprehensive dvd of her and can't find one....does any such item exist???

Agree at age 28 there was no excuse to not have a double axel. Dorothy was never a great jumper in my opinion. Superior spinner though
