- I shoot video at Gion Matsuri: Night Festival “Yoiyama”
Major three floats: Naginata Hoko, Kanko Hoko, Tsuiki Hoko.
Actaully, the Gion Festival is also one of the three biggest festivals in Japan and it's a quite unique summer festival. You can enjoy the festival over a week, watch the gorgeous decoration of the floats right before your eyes, and the procession goes in an elegant Kyoto atmosphere.
The festival starts on July 1 and ends on the 31st, taking a month. Many of the visitors come to enjoy it during the week of float-building, three evenings before the parade and the climax day of the parade.
There was a big change in the Gion Festival last year. It was divided into two parades: the former parade and the latter parade. That is to say, they repeat the week-long procedure of float-building, three festive evenings and the procession.
You can enjoy the Gion Festival twice!
"Sakimatsuri"or the former festival follows the traditional schedule with 23 floats led by the Naginata-hoko float as its leader.
* July 10 -14 "Hokotate" float-building
*July 14-16 "Yoiyama"evenings
*July 17 "Yamahoko-junko" Parade
"Atomatsuri"or the latter festival follows the new schedule with 10 floats including the renewed Oofune-hoko float in the end of the parade.
* July 18 -21 "Hokotate" float-building
*July 21-23 "Yoiyama"evenings
*July 24 "Yamahoko-junko" Parade
Adjust your schedule to see the festival. Get off the train at Shijo-Karasuma.
