Check out Sammy Davis Jr.'s live performance of "Music Of The Night" from Andrew Webber's production of "The Phantom Of The Opera" from the 1988 MDA Labor Day Telethon! It will be a phantasmic experience!
The MDA Labor Day Telethon was an enchanting yearly variety show that ran for half a century. Hosted for many years by Jerry Lewis, the telethon featured top stars from the world of music, comedy, and Broadway and was like no other show on earth.
The telethon was created to help support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which is leading the fight against muscular dystrophy. MDA dedicates itself to strength, independence and life. To learn more about MDA and to donate, please visit www.MDA.org. - Zábava
I toured for three years as the opening act for Sammy. After my show every night I would sit in the wings and watch this magnificent performer display his enormous talent. He could sing as good as anyone in the business, he could do comedy, he could do impressions, he could dance, he could play piano, he could play drums, he could play the trumpet. The one thing he couldn't do was fail to put on a great show.He always scored and I learned so much from him. We remained friends through the years and always had a lot of laughs when we got together. He loved to to hear a funny story and also told many funny stories. I was at a private showing with a small group of people the night before his burial and was standing next to his coffin when the pastor closed the lid on his coffin. His service the next day was a great tribute to this one of a kind entertainer. Rest in peace Sammy Davis I will never forget the kindness, love, advice and friendship you gave me.
Thank you for sharing your story! I envy you the opportunity to even meet Sammy much less to become such a close friend to him. (Then again, he got to know Tom Dreesen as well. You seem pretty cool. ;) ) "The one thing he couldn't do was fail to put on a great show" is a beautiful tribute to him. :)
I heard you talking about opening for Sammy and Frank on the Carson Podcast.
To MrDreesen, all true, and he had Broadway show written for him…YES…he could do anything..splendidly..
R
How incredibly fortunate to know such a great entertainer. I saw him once in concert and it made my life.
I miss the likes of Sammy coming off the broadville acts 1920s.....the skill and class is gone, such a magical period......the 1920s.....and all that talent is gone...
who will tell the story...who will search for it...if you dont know the talent and grasp the pass and that period .
This man UNDERSTANDS this song! The words! The feelings! The SPIRIT! This is hands DOWN the greatest performance of this song I have ever seen! He GETS IT!!! YES YES YES YES YES!!
We must remember he was well into his fight with throat cancer when he did this performance , which in my opinion, only magnifies his rendition even more. Bravo , Sammy. You were an awesome table setter for the many black entertainers and performers who were to follow the path you blazed for them!
I remember seeing this live as it aired. I had always been a fan of Sammy Davis Jr as an entertainer and like most of the other crooners of his day (The Rat Pack), he was terrific at staying in his lane and doing what he did best. So when the introduction started And being obsessed with musical theater and this show in particular at the time, I remember thinking and most likely saying out loud, "Aw hell no! This is not acceptable." But by the time this man had finished singing this song, I was done in. He took one song from a 2-and-a-half-hour show, made it his own without destroying it and turned into a complete movie all its own and it was and still is one of the finest performances of this piece outside of the show itself, that I have ever heard.
I can NOT believe I didn’t know about this version of this song. He would have been an incredible Phantom.
I am utterly astonished and mesmerised by the subliminity of his rendition. There’s such humanity, soft yet strong. I am truly awestruck.
I second your motion!
He is one helluva performed. I've seen the phantom and he didn't hit all the notes, but his randition is breathtaking
He could sing the yellow pages and he'd be good.
Oh yes ! I'm agree with you !
In the first three notes he transformed into the PHANTOM!
I know it has been said before but this man is the greatest all round entertainer of all time.Rip Sammy
857noel,its amazing that sammy being the greatest, doesnt do justice to him.he was far better than great if thats possible.sammy had more talent than 10 performers combined.i can watch sammy perform 24 hours a day.be safe.
I wish I could somehow get together with all these people who adore Sammy as much as I have for nearly my entire life (since age 10 or 11, and I'm now 70.) It would be a beautiful festival.
Tears running down my face. Oh! What a talent! Best version ever!!!!!!!
Sammy! WOW!
Outside of the original cast this is the best version I've ever heard. Thank you Sammy.
Wow! Never thought he could do THIS. Talent!
I was privledged to know him We got to see him debut this for the first time in AC with his first live performamce of it. How wonderful to be able to visit this & remember such a great memory. RIP my friend. God blessed us to have you, Alto, Manny, , mom, Romona (his sister), and brother in law, the crew and band, George, Shirley, Brian and all connected which became part of our family and in our lives forever.

My Sammy Davis jr. Tribute czcams.com/video/YCDq_5o2iDc/video.html
Strong storytelling. Majestic
This is raw talent at its finest.
The most talented of the Rat Pack by far, IMO.
Indeed, left Frank Sinatra floundering. SDJ was human, he felt everything he sang, played or danced. Even now he lifts your heart and leaves your soul open and alive. RIP dear man.
@@jacquelinetillyer8666 Not to mention his talent for impersonating others.
The MDA would always get the best talent to appear. Sammy Davis, Jr really delivered.
WOW.. just WOW...
BOY - did he LEAVE IT ALL OUT THERE OR WHAT ??????!! Simply AMAZING rendition - maybe the BEST I've ever heard !! I guess it shouldn't really SURPRISE anyone - look at his renditions of Mr. Bojangles and The Candyman which are NEARLY as brilliant . This was just ONE NOTCH above those in my opinion though . It looked like it even surprised Jerry judging by the look on his face and the thumbs up he gave him , lol ! I used to HATE these telethons when I was a kid for obvious reasons but BOY do I wish they were still around TODAY !! Jerry always got the BEST talent to come and perform . Sammy AND Jerry are sorely MISSED today !
There are singers, actors, dancers, comics, impressionists.
And then there is Sammy Davis jr.
Incomparable, the definition of Incomparable.
Indeed. Well said!!!
@@RashidLanie8 Yes, so perfectly expressed!
Sammy was simply the best and Liza sure misses and loved Sammy like we all did and still do ! Have always loved this song its so very pretty !
This version always makes me cry Mr Davis sung the best version he is so missed such a beautiful man blessed voice I hear only this version every time I hear this song, he should have won a Grammy for this one performance we still hear ur voice Mr Davis
I love Sammy and think he was one of the greatest entertainers of all time. But when I just now came upon this video I was expecting it to be a kitschy, campy joke. Well, I was wrong. And while a couple of his vocal/physical choices didn't completely work for me, he made the song his own in a striking way and gave far more feeling and electricity to it than some of the Phantoms I've seen in the actual show who sang beautifully but seemed to walk through their scenes without bringing the character to life. Sammy sure as hell did not do that here! What a lovely surprise this was. Thank you for posting!
The greatest performer of all time 🕰️
Wow. Did not expect that! well done.
Sammy Davis Jr captivates and conveys all of the emotions of The Music Of The Night with his phenomenal voice and performance. Truly the best version- timeless.
Only wished Sammy would have played the phantom on stage like Robert Gulliame did in LA, years ago. Robert was magnificent!! I'm sure Sammy would have been unbelievable
I think ur right. What a performance..he totally took on the Persona of the Phantom,fantastic..
He was turned down for the new york edition cause he was a back man so sad this is possible the greatest version of this song I hope the men that turned him down know what they lost
Genius. Greatest entertainer of all time.
True that!!!
This guy is just feelin his way thru the music.
It's Wednesday October 20th 2021 And Thank You Sammy Davis Jr #Entertainment #Fan
he is one of a kind! brilliant rendition of the phantom
This is immaculate !
Sammy was my first concert. I’ve always loved him and always will. He put emotion into everything he did. RIP Mr. Bojangles.
Also that bass and guitar intro is mesmerizing
First I thought this was comedy, but at the end, it was an art.
I have a very early memory of watching this as a child with my grandfather who loved him. I typed it in to see if this was actually a real performance because I vividly remember the beauty of this. I would have only been 3 years old…..beautiful
Wow, powerful ! So miss this gorgeous man !
Would’ve loved to seen him do Phantom of the opera for real
I remember experiencing this live..i always stayed up to watch the telethon knowing i would witness the master showman Sammy... Brilliant acting piece here...He Always Gave and then Gave some more... Bottomless pit of Talent... American Treasure!!! Love you Sammy Always...Much love to his Family ❤
Did not realize he could sing like this! Wow!
You don't know then all the ways he had to communicate his emotions through his impecable singing.
I saw this live on TV, I'll never forget it!
Absolutely the most talented entertainer of his time and to think a short time after singing this song he would be gone.
saw it live, still get chills, thank you 🙏
Wow!!!
This has to be the best version of The Music of the Night I have ever heard.
GOD--Unbelievable.
From a mad keen 73yo Aussie fan.
Had the honor to see Sammy live in Melbourne,Australia in the late 50's or the early 60's & it was the greatest live concert i have seen & i have seen a lot.
He will always be remenbered.
The drama SDJ is the best - to those saying the notes are not there - they are there - he is just rolling in talent that it sounds unlike the theatre kids hehe.
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
Thank you for sharing!
Bravo, BRAVO ✌️💞🎶🙏
Brilliant!
Sammy, you are immortal.
WOW! Just WOW.
He was the best entertainer ever.Hands down
Never thought that he can sing this song convincing .... but he can. Incredible version
Brilliant.
Classic I remember watching it
To be frank, his voice had started to diminish at this time but he still did it better than anyone.
I like this my favorites song.
Seen Sammy when I was a kid for the first time what a great entertainer I will always remember him RIP Sir.
Incredible performance, spellbinding !
Sammy Davis Jr was born in 1925, the same year as the silent film of Phantom of the Opera was released in theaters. Meaning he probably grew up going to theaters and seeing the silent film as it made its rounds though cinemas. I say this because you can sort of see him channeling Lon Chaney though his facial expressions and hand hand gestures and two, it’s sort of wild knowing that Sammy was singing for all intensive purposes a modern musical. A musical where Norm Lewis and Ramin Karimloo set the gold standards for the performance not even 12 years ago and they totally play a different Phantom than Sammy.
Sammy Davis--they just don't make them like that anymore--simply Awesome !!! Best ever !!!!
How cool. Would never guessed he liked Phantom.
Brad redford, sammy was very observant regarding classic songs.if you can ,watch on you tube his medley from porgy and bess.this performance reinforces the fact, that sammy davis jr.was the greatest entertainer that ever lived.
He proved all the douters that they were wrong a Jazz singer could do opera He still blows my mind away
The only time I was really able to fully grasp what this song is all about. The Gerald Butler version was the first version I heard and this video explained to me everthing I missed with that.
NB...one take of Candy Man .which he was not fond of. Genius
Man, this is Great. I never knew that Sammy did this song.
Sammy we miss you no one is like it
Phenomenal!! And someone kill that scene stealing FLY asap!!!
I think Sammy was the greatest of them all.
Holy 💩
Geeze, I miss him. Taken too soon 😢
Yes, we missed and grieve very much when a world treasure is not longer with us. They shouldn't be permitted to die.
The best preformance of this song I have ever seen. We need more like Sam, Jerry, Dean and Frank. Pure talent.
Uh no. Not even close to Michael Crawford
Agree with Donna Michael Crawford a lot better
@@donnalynn2 ,yes, sammy davis did a much better job rhan michael crawford.sammy can sing any song better than any singer.no one can compare to the talents of sammy.he was the greatest evet.from robert, the s.f.giant fan
Really?????
Robert Rothberg , really??
the best
It is a cliche used far too much but in the most genuine way Sammy is the once in a lifetime performer.
Without a doubt he was the epitome of what could be the perfect entertainer
Perfection.
Stirring.....all
What's with Jerry Lewis rolling his eyes at him at the end?
That was hilarious. Lol
Jerry tried to express hus admiration, showing that Sammy Davis was out of this world. No words, no gestures enough to express his artistry. Let us all in shock and admiration.
Jerry lawrence, jerry lewis showed sammy the utmost respect, after his rendition.it was obvious when jerry rolled his eyes,it was an indication that he was mesmerized.jerry looked like he couldnt believe what a great performance sammy gave.after watching this rendition,i shook my head.i couldnt believe how excellent this rendition was.sammy was the greatest entertainer that ever lived.
That was Jerry Lewis's friendly way of saying "Show off!" Without using words. Remember that Sammy was close friends with Dean Martin, so they had a lot of in-jokes and non-verbal communication between them.
Lord
Have mercy!!
I love this piece of music, my only comment, is he does not have the vocal range, this is more than made up by the interpretation of the words. One day there may be a singer who has the vocal range and the dynamism of Sammy Davis's version. That , to me , would be perfection
Toonbear 81,are you serious.sammy davis jr,had a tremendous vocal range.theres not any song that he cant sing without perfection.no singer ever could be compared to the greatest entertainer that ever lived.listen to his rendition of old man river, what kind of fool am i,and im not any one.how does sammy do on his vocal range?sammy wss the greatest of them all.from robert, the s.f.giant fan.
Toonbear 81,you can also listen to sammy davis jr.singing and i am telling you from dream girls.how is his vocal range singing this song?sammy had a great vocal range.what a great talent he was.from robert, the s.f.giant fan
Was Ramin Karamaloo inspired by this guy?? they sing this with similar cadences.
Interesting observation and there is a definite similarity..
Theo best
Flm semi
I loved Sammy singing everything else, but having seen The Phantom twice, I’d give him a B for a great attempt.
BC L,what you just witnessed ,was one of the greatest performances ever.sammy was the greatest entertainer that ever lived.giving him an A for this performance would be too low.appreciate excellence at work.sammy had more talent than 10 performers combined.
Wow, not the best vocalist for this tune, imho, but so much emotion !
Sammy is terrific, but the song is drivel.
I love Sammy but this is not his song.
Many were his songs this included. Above all, the emotion he fills this particular one, the deep dramatizacion he does of it. He deepens his voice and knows the importance of each prhase. He caresses every word and make them his lovers.
Donna Lynn, what you witnessed was one of the greatest performances ever.sammy did a superb job with his rendition.you were watching a genius at work.this performance, only reinforces the fact, that sammy davis jr.was the greatest entertainer that ever lived.
Hey don't not sing this song and your voice so not sure isn't
What are you talking about? I know for a fact this was Sammy Davis Jr singing
Can we get a translator here please?
