      Different word. The word was "Peek"--- "to take a short look at". Pike's Peak { a Moutain top dirt road car race in the Colorado mountains} is "Peak" ---- as in: "the top of the mountain". They sound alike, yes, but very different words.
      Although---- on this game, since A.L. could not spell worth a dime, he probably would not have known the difference. The Dictionary Ph.D man would have known but not A.L..

    • @voicetube
      @voicetube Před rokem

      @@gusloader123 Yes, I do know it's a different word with a different spelling, but on Password, spelling doesn't matter. So even if you give a clue for the homophone, it still works. For example, often on the show, the clue-giver might give a clue for "Wait" when the word is "Weight" or a clue for "Build" for "Billed."

    • @gusloader123

      @@voicetube - Hello. I know that people did that, BUT therein is a major problem: A.L. often said to people: "We (meaning him) don't like using "sound-a-likes" because it never works and confuses people". LIE! It often worked when nothing else did work. Some celebrities were not very bright.
      If I had been a contestant trying to win some $ to pay the rent and car payment and shoes for the kid's feet that month ,,,, and it was almost the last clue and the celebrity was daft (but photogenic) I would have used a "sound-a-like" clue myself.
      A.L. claimed to have a B.A. in English from the U. of Texas yet the man could not spell.
      Have you ever seen the black & white episode with the password was "Pour" (as in "pour the water".) and one of the people gave clues for "poor" ("having no or little money") instead of "Pour"? A.L. did not know the difference.
      The P-W show Announcer / Speaker would have been a better Host IMO. {He did fill in one week for A.L. back in the 1st or second season. He did a good job.}
      I watched P-W from when it started in the afternoon with my mom as she folded and Ironed clothes. (Very early 60's). I am not glad that A.L. got cancer and died, but I did NOT miss him being replaced as the host. He allowed the female celebs to cheat and use gestures yet warned the male Celebs not to. He treated contestants from the Southern States badly and insulted their accents.
