    • @herb_rolls3929
      @herb_rolls3929 Před rokem +188

      I think parents get a different kind of tired because the patience required for a child is 24/7 unpaid labour and being "on" all the time. Then, when parents inevitably fail at being perfect, they feel immense shame and can project that onto their kids. You can look into the controversial uprising of "gentle parenting," which is controversial because of how exhausting it is to treat your kid with respect and learn about child development in a non-anecdotal way (think doing real research). I also think mothers experience a level of exhaustion unlike most careers during motherhood due to everything I said and traumatic bodily changes (hormones, breastfeeding, depression, leaking, peeing yourself, putting on weight, spinal issues etc.). I think women have the complete right to declare how tired they are because of societal oppression, systems not set up for their bodily wellness, and more. Not saying other marginalized groups and careers don't experience exhaustion but I think for all women, POC, disabled, trans men and AFAB nb folks, we really do need to admit that pregnancy and childcare is a 24/7 demanding job where you never truly relax for years.

      I remember a lot of eye roll moments with Ned but in all fairness I can’t think of any time he used parenting as an excuse of one upmanship. If anything during one of the mean tweet videos when someone said he looked tired from parenting he clarified his son was over 2 and his exhaustion was NOT from parenting…
      Just surprised so many other people got a different message based on all the upvotes here. For any of his misgivings and all the things he hammed up, parenting superiority didn’t seem to be one of them

      @oldbluewitch3386 please also keep in mind that some parents also have chronic illnesses and the two are not mutually exclusive. And it’s often hard, if not impossible, to see some chronic illnesses with the bare human eye. And many chronic illnesses are triggered by pregnancy itself, like mine!

    As a chronically ill person that deals with chronic fatigue I felt Zach saying f u to parents that act like you don't know what being tired is like unless you have kids in my bones. I'm careful not to bring up my fatigue issues when someone is venting being tired, unless they ask my experiences, so when I'm venting and they pull that . . . like my fatigue is so bad doctors go "that's not normal" maybe I do know what being tired is like.

    • @VMYeahVN
      @VMYeahVN Před rokem +25

      Yeah 100%. Parents who think they automatically win the "I have it worse" Olympics (which are a dumb game to begin with) are absolutely insufferable. There are people going through way tougher shit than them, who like yourself and others with chronic pain, DID NOT CHOOSE IT. Unlike most (not all obviously) parents who actively chose their life style. Hell, even able-bodied, no children, folk can be tired too. Everyone's all stuck in shit jobs we hate and that's draining, and those people saying they feel tired sometimes is valid too. Like i wish we as a society could just let people express their feelings. Parents taking others saying they're tired as a personal attack on them is such weird behavior. They need to learn that anyone can feel tired. There are levels to being tired (and we largely lack the vocabulary to discuss it with good granularity), some do have it worse than others (but that doesn't mean the people who have it less bad don't have it at all), and it's all subjective, and all four of those things can be true at the same time.
      P.S.: I hope your doctor was able to identify your fatigue issue and i hope there was some kind of treatment or help for it.

    Horses do go to slaughter actually incredibly often. They ship to Canada and Mexico. It’s actually a huge issue with horses and similar to shelter dogs and so many go unwanted. And the same case with there’s expensive purebred dogs and dogs that are mutts. But there aren’t horse shelters. So if you don’t want a horse, you take it to auction. Where it’s entirely legal to buy and ship the horses to slaughter and it’s a very big business. This is almost always where old, unwanted, retired race horses, etc go. I have 2 horses that I specially own for their safety, I pay board and feed for them at a farm even though I don’t ride much anymore because they’re happy and safe.

Love is the key to being a great parent. Lead with love and the rest will follow. You and your wife are both so funny, and if you remember that all things in life are better and easier through the lense of humor, you can weather any storm.
    Happy Holidays, Everyone! Thanks for another great year of content. I look forward to seeing more from you in the New Year and I'm especially looking forward to more of Miles and Rainie on the various podcasts. Be well.

    There are horse slaughterhouses. I know most human beings don't eat horses but they are used in the dog food and cat food trades. Horse hide is also used in leather production. So horses that are old or lame or just unwanted often go to the slaughterhouse. And sometimes the beautiful Mustangs that run wild and free in the American southwest are also rounded up and slaughtered.

    Being a new parent is so mesmerizing. To see this small human you’ve created is so beautiful. You get to see their little personalities develop more and more each month 😍 and it is so fun. I have 5 kids. Even when they annoy me to no end I am still so in love lol. Usually when they annoy me it’s because they’re acting too much like me

    About the horse topic lol, while horse slaughter is illegal in the US, there are auction houses and “kill buyers” that will buy horses that no one else bids on in auction houses near the Mexican and Canadian borders and will trailer the horses to slaughterhouses over the Mexican-American and Canadian-American borders since horse slaughter is legal in those countries. Thousands upon thousands of horses each year are stuck in terrible, inhumane conditions in auction houses and are then trailered shoved together in livestock trailers before being killed in slaughterhouses with a bolt shot through their head. While there are not horse slaughterhouses in the US, there are specific auction houses, especially in TX, that are known for essentially being a death sentence for horses because so many horses go through there and get bought by kill buyers to be slaughtered. It is actually a serious problem in terms of the terrible conditions at these auction houses and how poorly the horses are treated at the auction house and after, but even more so the extent of horse neglect and abuse prevalent in the US that lands horses in those auction horses broken, traumatized, and emaciated. I won’t even get into the issues of the US Bureau of Land Management that “manages” the wild horse population. Anyway, if you’re curious about the US horse slaughter pipeline, the Bureau of Land Management’s poor management and treatment of wild horses, even how those have become connected, and what you could do to be more aware and/or help, there’s tons of info on the internet, rescues, associations, books, etc for you to learn more

    The quote you were talking about in the beginning is so true. My son is 10.5 months old. I'm so tired, but I can deal with it. I get so frustrated, but I've learned how to work through it. Nothing could have prepared me for the love I feel for him, or how the love for everyone else in my life would also increase when I see them interact with him. Being a mother is the hardest and most wonderful thing I've ever done.
    Good luck and congratulations!

    Love you guys and I look forward to you're podcast every week! On a side note, there are auctions for horses where they sell to slaughterhouses for many uses including dog food. The condition these horses are in are often horrific and often abused. This is where the horse Big John was taken from. There are lots of organizations that rescue horses from auctions that are headed to slaughterhouses... I'm not sure if these slaughterhouses are in the US or Canada but they are in North America.

    horse girl here ,,, I have to chime in on the horse slaughter thing LOL because it's driving me crazy, there are no horse slaughter houses in the US HOWEVER horses get sent through auctions and will be bought by meat dealers and then shipped to either Canada or Mexico where there ARE horse slaughter houses and then their meat will get turned into dog food or get sent to countries that do consume horses. sorry to be a debbie downer LOL.

    It’s totally true that the good parts are more than you can imagine. But the stressful stuff is on a different level too. And I think it’s good/healthy to admit that. Parenting is no joke. It’s worth every moment that’s hard. But it’s important to be honest so new parents don’t feel alone/like there’s something wrong with them. It IS harder than anything else. And that’s ok! You’ll survive it, and loving your kid is what will always matter most. You’re not a failure or bad parent if it knocks you on your butt sometimes.

    The horse auction industry sells to foriegn buyers who ship the horses in crappy cramped conditions to mexico or canada where they still have horse slaughter houses. There were 3 active slaughter houses for horses in the USA which I think closed in the past 20 years. There may be 1 last active one but I'm out of the loop if it's still running or not. Many of the horses winding up in these kill pens are wild horses, pets that are all ages of life orthat they just can't afford anymore or are just too old, or failure work horses- drafts for farming, race horses, other sports horses. The pens are bad places to end up. There is usually a high rate of infectious diseases running rampent and accidental injuries. It's not a good place to end up.
    Horse meat is a tender meat which is still eaten in Europe often. I can go get some out of the pet store to feed my dog. I personally do not eat it because I'm a horse girl.
    Also Big John the Belgian is a good boy. xD
