With a light recoiling rifle like an M4 you can support the barrel on a surface, and then wrap your sling tightly in your support hand and pull down. You can't really get a good cheek weld doing this but it allows you to suppress an enemy pretty well and keep your head up off the gun.

Yeah. Most have switched to electronic hearing protection now that provides a means to receive and transmit radio comms, protect hearing, but still allow the user to hear quiet sounds.
lol At the time I was in, our ear protection wasn't as high speed as it is now. It was the kind you stuff into your ears. They work great at protecting your hearing, the problem was that once the shooting started, you're not thinking about putting them in. And then, it's just so loud, everyone is yelling out descriptions of the enemy and whatnot, gunfire, loud vehichle noise, that the ear plugs would make it hard to hear even if you had them in. It's why I got tinnitus these days.
This looks like "older" footage. Nowadays they have something which look like earphones, they cancel damaging sounds and amplify speech. This way you can still talk normally while shooting etc.
