    What a fun day exploring Glenfinnan, Scotland!!! We LOVE this place!
    In this vlog, we drove from Fort William to Glenfinnan to catch a glimpse of the last Jacobite Steam Train crossing over the Glenfinnan Viaduct in 2020. It was SO MUCH FUN to snap great photos against the orange autumn hills!
    Afterwards, we explored the Visitor Center museum, walked around the Jacobite Rising monument, and hiked down the beautiful nature path along Loch Shiel. And more!
    If you’re planning an upcoming visit to the Glenfinnan area, we hope this vlog provides some great ideas for what to add to your itinerary!
    Cheers, and happy travels!

    My mother was born and raised in Glenfinnan and went to school there, the old schollhouse is directly across from chapel and was closed due to the fact there were only a few children to teach. I went to Glenfinnan every year from a young age and spent the whole of my summer holidays from school. I was friendly with the station masters son, Alisdair and every sunday we walked the train line across the viaduct with the dogs. Allowed back then as no trains ran on the Sabbath (sunday) and believe me it is a view to die for. Glenfinan house hotel was like a 2nd home to me as the Mcfarlanes children were ages with me and my uncle liked a wee dram in the public bar, lol.thanks for sharing

      Please tell me your uncle was named Joe and was the neighbor of the hotel who came to the bar and sang Scottish folk songs. If that was him, that would be amazing! Derek and I loved meeting him when we visited!

    Stunning scenery, gorgeous colours especially when the sun came out. I like to travel in Europe during the early summer months as I don't like cold weather! But it seems I'm missing out on some beautiful sights and colours. I love the old steam train and was impressed it was so long with lots of carriages, other trains I've seen in the past have been much shorter.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Před 2 lety

      I hear you on the cold weather. Plus, the shoulder seasons can be unpredictable with rainy days. That said, I was really glad that we ended up getting to see such beautiful fall foliage after so many rainy days the prior week in England! And yes - that steam train is epic! I hope I get to ride in it someday!

      @mr.meanstotravel Před 2 lety +3

      Hey Neil, agree that Inverness is the largest (and only) city in the Highlands. I said town, because the UK seems pretty specific about what’s a city vs. town making Fort William the largest town (since it’s not a city). 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Před 2 lety +1

      Haha I'm laughing/loving this exchange, because it's def reminding me of how totally confused we were about towns vs. cities when we were there!!! So crazy that those words don't really mean much when it comes to population size! I remember that we visited the "city" of Wells because it had a Cathedral and were told that it was a city for that reason. We also visited Dornoch (another vlog coming up) and saw their Cathedral, but I guess it's commonly called a town! Not sure why those would be different! And then boy oh boy were we surprised when we went to Tain, Scotland and it was called a Royal Burgh haha! Always trying to confuse us Americans, I'd say. 😀

    • @neilmorrison7356
      @neilmorrison7356 Před 2 lety

      Yes it in confusing officially it is the Queen who decides if somewhere is a city. However some places have city in the name but aren’t cities Wellen Garden City.
      And some places used to be cities but are not any more like Elgin also in the Highlands. However the name of the football team is Elgin City FC

      Thanks Paolo for the video compliment!
      We pronounce loch the way the word is pronounced in America. There’s a slight difference between the way Americans say the word and the way a British person would. We also say other words differently too, like garage. When I hear a Brit in Chicago say gare-idge, I just know they’re from a different place with a different dialect of the same language. Hope that makes sense!

      It is the largest town in the Highlands, and only exceeded in size by the City of Inverness. So it's the second largest settlement and the largest town.

      We actually spoke A LOT about the Scottish historical significance to the area while explaining its connection to the Jacobite uprising very early on in this video, so hopefully we made it clear that it’s much more than just a filming location. 🤞🏻
      With that, Harry Potter was a huge part of both of our childhoods, especially since we’re roughly the same age as the character. Embracing happy childhood memories is good for one’s soul, especially since neither of us had perfect childhoods.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  Před rokem +1

      Yep, Scotland is indeed the country! That’s why the video title does say Scotland (and has since it was published). The thumbnail says UK, though, for a couple reasons: 1) space, 2) consistency across all of our UK vlogs, 3) if you type Glenfinnan into Google Maps or some social media it says Glenfinnan, UK. Hope that explains! 😀🙏🏻

      Sorry, but you are wrong. The sovereign country of which Scots, English, Welsh and Northern Irish are all citizens is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland is one of the four "home nations" of the UK. It is not, however, a sovereign country in itself. Neither are England, Wales or Northern Ireland. They are all constuent parts of the UK. A sovereign country is one that issues passports to its citizens. As I'm sure you know, the only passport available to Scottish, English, Welsh or Northern Irish people is a UK passport. A sovereign country protects its citizens with its armed forces. In the case of each of the "home nations" it is the UK armed forces. A sovereign country represents itself at the UN. In our case it is the UK which is the UN member, not Scotland, England, Wales or NI individually.

      @@MeansToTravel See my response to Robert Watson on this point. I am Scottish, as he is. But like many Scots, he obviously doesn't like the fact that Scotland is part of the sovereign country known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland is not a separate country, even though many Scots wish it was. But in a referendum on independence in 2014 55 percent of Scots voted to remain a part of the UK.
