- Why Toguro is the Greatest Shonen Villain: A Yu Yu Hakusho Villain Character Dissection.
Full Dark Tournament Dissection: • Revisiting Shonen's Gr...
If I asked you who was the greatest villain in shonen, who would you choose? Doflamingo? Pain? Aizen? Meruem? These are all great choices and I wouldn't fault you if you thought any of these were the greatest villain in shonen. But if we're talking about the greatest Shonen Villain, to me there is only one choice, and that is the younger Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho. This video will analyze not only the writing behind Toguro’s character, but also the themes of his character and how it contributes to the themes of the story at large.
Now if you don't understand why I specified Toguro as being not necessarily the best villain in shonen, but undoubtedly being the greatest shonen villain, then stay tuned because by the end you'll understand exactly what I mean.

Toguro embodies the power of symplicity. With Sensui, he is extremely complex, but Toguro has a large amount of depth that stands him apart from most villains in shonen
The fact that he mentored yuske in his own effed up way was a great touch .
Toguro is not a simple antagonist, he's also a mentor for Urameshi. He force him further his limit to avenge genkai and be stronger than him to protect his friends and at least give a decent death in battle. The simplicity of Toguro jr is compense by the deep of his personality
ToGOATuro is easily my favorite villain in all of fiction. The way he kept me hyped, anxious and excited for the entire dark tournament arc will always be deeply ingrained in my soul 📿🙏🗿
Toguro was one of my favorite villians from Yu Yu Hakusho, him and Raoh from Hokuto no Ken are some of the badass fighters I have seen in anime.
Friend I never met right here
@@justint7667 so what do you mean ?
Thank you for this tribute to an amazing character.
Certainly one of my favorite characters in all of anime/manga. Not only on a surface level, as he is a gigachad, terminator/dukenukem looking badass, but his characterization is so interesting and well written, plus his dynamic with Yusuke. And that final fight was simply nothing short of amazing
Just discovered this video and your channel. Very cool stuff!
You are very intelligent and perceptive on this stuff. I loved both vids I've seen so far from you. Looking forward to the next one!
i got some goosebumps while watching this video. Thank you for this
This was great dude! Imma need that Sensui dissection after this pure heat. Greatest Shonen Villain is such a good way to describe what he is. Not every shonen antagonist is a villain, and not every villain necessarily embodies the antithesis of the Battle manga tropes but Toguro does all of those things.
homie i am an avid, borderline obsessed, hxh fan but watched yyh only once in 2019... but even then, i knew that yyh had "something" that makes it special... not just the predecessor to hxh, but something that makes it unique
i love how you made that distinction of villains and antagonists in 0:42, because i really feel the same way
while hxh has my favorite villains of all time, i think yyh delivers in crafting fitting foils to yusuke... with tugoro representing what yusuke could become and sensui really being a former spirit detective
while the hxh villains dont necessarily feel like they were written with that ethos in mind (i dont want to say one is better than the other tho)
ANYWAYS, thanks for these amazing vids... i watched this, your hxh vid and your sensui one... i want to read yyh now and watch the rest of your vids, keep up the great work
Good work on the thumbnail 🫵👁️👄👁️
Him and Sensui are amazing villains. No joke, Toguro alone got me to write a story as a hobby so it could with a villain like Toguro in it. Watching these makes me want to try and flesh him out more.
Always nice coming across someone who appreciates yu yu hakusho as much as i do. Great video and cliche statement but you deserve more subs.
Great analysis
absolutely a banger video. i would love to see you cover mangas like hxh & possibly lesser covered things like solo leveling, or maybe even no guns life which ill say was an ABSOLUTE BANGER anime and im heated it basically vanished from existence
I appreciate it. After covering YYH, I’m working on HXH then AOT and JJK.
@@The_Ciple aot became midddddd but i understand thats the direction your going. im homeless so these videos help me escape from the situation sometimes. i appreciate the vids bro
Beautifully said. Great Toguro tribute.
Toguro will ask you, "anong gentle gentle?!"
PHILIPPINES MENTIONED 👀
The build up to Teguro i had gotten more tense in anticipation than i can recall. It was the most intense part of the story imo
This is great, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
The original one punch man hahhaa
Amazing how much good this show was
Toguro will always stand out as one of the most memorable and scarily brave characters in fiction. He willingly went to the worst torture dimension for 10k cycles of 10k years of torture because of his guilt. That is 1 billion years in hell for only 50 years of his sins. My head canon is that Koenma told Toguro that he would sentence him that much to appease his honor and wishes only surface level and instead sentenced him to like 1000 years. No matter what though his ending always makes me cry even after watching the show 4 times since 2009!
Great analysis. I've always favored Toguro in my #1 villain spot.
I like too much the Togashi's quality to give a depth layer to his characters and stories. I like Yu Yu Hakusho and HunterxHunter for this very reason (they are both in my top anime). Great video!
P.S. Toguro the best!
❤❤❤ love it
I got the wpunded heart and broken dream reference
Unpopular opinion (And loved the video btw this is by no means a bash) but personally Sensui>Y Toguro. I love what Y Toguro does for Yusuke's character and the Yu yu story line but I always felt like Sensui hit on philosophical challenges and internal conflict that brought the audience in so close that somehow Sensui and his psychics felt like people/viewpoints that the viewers could somehow relate to.
I agree, no hate on Toguro. The guy is one of the best well written villians of all time but I think Sensui is on a different level. YYH just knocked it out of the park with both of those guys. I actually felt myself relating and cheering on Sensui.
I like toguro more but i definitely see what youre saying and honestly kinda agree with you
Toguro is an underrated GOAT
I will always say this:
Sensui was a great villain and great blueprint for the characters in HxH, but Toguro’s just too damn iconic.
He knew Genki was his mentor, he factored it into his plan.
I love the dark tournament arc. But let's be honest the first world tournament in Dragonball was too iconic and is THE tournament arc for me in shonen
I have watched the live action Yu Yu Hakusho and they really portrayed Toguro at his best. There were many concerns because the dark tournament was not represented good but if you will ask anyone what is the highlight of the Dark tournament? It will be the boss fight.
He's a bad guy, but that doesnt mean hes a *bad* guy.
💯
Goat period
Hao from the original Shaman King anime is such an underrated villain.
I hope Toguro gets some more relevancy now that Netflix show is out and it ended with his fight vs Yusuke. Though it is nothing compared to the anime, it was still okay.
have u watched inuyasha? u should talk abt naraku if u havent already, i wna hear ur thoughts on him
I haven’t watched Inuyasha yet, it’s on my watch list, but it’s a very long list 🥲.
ohhh i c, hopefully u find the time 2 watch it, super great show :^) @@The_Ciple
Dude what are you saying?! When Toguro invites Yusuke to the tournament he KNEW Genkai was his master. He wanted Genkai there too..
He wanted to be defeated by Yusuke. At his (Toguro) 100%. He wanted to be defeated by Yusuke when Yusuke had Genkai's power as well.
He wanted to lose, and he didnt want to kill Genkai or any of Yusuke's friends.
Besides that good video
Where did you read that? From what i read it seemed like a happy coincidence that Genkai even participated in the tournament given she was exempt. I got no indication that Toguro knew about Genkai, or that Togashi had even created that plot line yet. You gotta show me the chapter and page.
@@The_Ciple i never read the manga. But its in the anime. 1) she was invited by the committee on behalf of Toguro.
2). Im pretty sure Toguro even said that it wasn't by coincidence that Genkai was there. 3) Sakyo even said Toguro had this all planned out. He said he thought he (Sakyo) was in control but the whole time Tugro knew what was finna happen. 4) Kurama and I think even Koenma backed this up.
For episodes this all happened from when Genkai died to Tugro to the end of the DT.
Theres no way it was just coincidence, the way I look at it is he wanted to be defeated by Genkai's student. To prove he was wrong.
@@BigPapiMatt To be more specific, Genkai was requested to join the Dark Tournament, but wasn't required to, due to her previous victory prize of not wanting to be summoned again. The people that came to invite her just sort of used Yusuke as additional incentive, mentioning his participation was mandatory, but Genkai's was just optional. So she probably joined, cause she knew Yusuke was going to get killed otherwise, without further training. Consider it almost blackmail, but in an underhanded way.
TOGURO, character: *SOMEONE! PROVE. ME. WRONG*
TOGURO, mind: *AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*
I agree
Toguro also wanted to be proven wrong or right that his choice of youth and power over friendship was right or wrong.
Orochimaru was pretty fricking bad brought people back from the dead killed people to make them into dolls fed them to his snake and took over bodies to be immortal this guy was a demon for like a minute
What turns me away from a lot of shonen anime is the endless stream of "And here's my newest power/form that was hitherto unmentioned!" that makes fights feel padded. I liked the Toguro brothers because both have simple moves (bigger muscles and shapeshifting) but that's all they need to feel threatening and unbeatable.
I'd choose the phantom troupe
My only problem with Toguro is that we learn about his backstory and motives too late in the arc. It makes him feel less developed than he could have been.
Best of the best
I’d go with sensui personally
Sensui
Toguro
Meruem
Freeza
Aizen
Not all villains are antagonists the same way not all heros are protagonists
Toguro as one of the best written Shonen villains. Hao Asakura imo is probably above simply because he literally went and actually achieved his goal as the antagonist: Becoming Shaman King, and he was pretty much unbeatable the entire series.
Doffy had the most swag.
I came to terms with the body proportions but I couldn’t get over with this grown ass man looking like he can pick up a car fighting with a high school kid that barely looks like he can pick up 100lbs. This show is so great but sometimes I’m reluctant showing this to people new to anime lol.
Anong gentle gentle
anong gentle gentle
Toguro's the GOAT
Also he spared the group in the stands by intentionally missing them
He’s also the most badass
Aizen mogs shoenen antoganists
Sensui from yu yu is also great antoganist
But still aizen victim
Aizen is the only Shonen antoganist who is close to perfection
If aizen will get a rich backstory and conclusion in future of BLEACH then he would be perfection
I think the whole "villain with a motivation" is one of the most misused tropes, which has inspired amateurish storytellers to create repetitive villains with forced motivations.
Toguro's motivation works because we already know about his characteristic and it is only revealed in the very end.
Kinda crazy that he ends up being a demon either way
i just wanna say jiren is pretty much alien mr clean and his character as a whole is pretty much a wwe gimmick since he's big and strong with a personality of a used condom.
He is itachi but written better.
Idkkk bro I def got aizen as the goat lol
Toguro is a bamf!
Ehhhhhhhhhhh def not but he is a good one
🧢
Glazing way to hard😂😂😂is this your first shonen or something 😂😂
The live action ruined his character development.
Nope
Madara Uchiha is the greatest shonen villain 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
stop saying yurameshi. its lame
the new yuyu hakusho live action on netflix does a great job with simplifying the story. Toguro still has his motivation for teaching and pushing yusuke to unlock his power. it's a great twist to a villain.
I almost barfed when you added Meruem to the greatest shonen villains list. He was the worst villain in the worst arc of one of my most loved series. He was trash and Togashi should be ashamed of himself for creating that boring ass character.
😂😂😂😂
Togashi is the biggest shonen villain because he's a lazy crybaby bum
