It's not the size of the engine, it's what you do with it 😅

I always found the A340 to be reminiscent of the DC-8 or 707. It was nice, but I don't think I have ever seen one in person.

They were designed with slightly bigger engines in mind, but that engine never came (at least not in time, PW1000G is way too late), so they kinda have to use CFM56 instead.

The story is kinda right but the PW1000G had nothing to do with it.

Using CFM56 would also increase parts commonality between the A340 & A320

think i read somewhere and correct me if i am wrong that Airbus had planned to use bigger engines on the plane, engines were newer but ultimately never built which led Airbus to use the smaller engines

Late 90s v early 200s always preferred the quieter (more soothing frequencies?) A340-400 over the 747-400s from London to HK. And four engines - more reassuring to me at least

Hi, I have actually, I flew one when I was 7 years old from MRU to PER, it's a nice aircraft I think and later in 2011 I flew on my first A340-500 from SEZ-DXB-SEZ, it was also when I boarded my first A380 from DXB -LHR. I know totally different variat the 300 and 500 and different engines too, the 500 being bigger, but I still love it and still do. I also enjoyed seeing Edelweiss operate their here in SEZ.

Thankfully, the A340-500 and -600 got Trent 500 series engines.
