This show is a product of its time. WB was a struggling network and every show, even popular ones like Buffy, was at risk of cancellation. So maintaining viewership was very important and shows on WB would try all sorts of stunts to keep ratings up. Spike was a fan favorite character so they kept him around to keep viewership up even though they didn't really plans for him.
Also, they never portray Glory as super smart, they portray her as being insane. She's literally a mad demon god banished to earth.

They seemed to misunderstand multiple things in this episode, and I'm not really sure why. I usually agree with most of their analysis, but they seem to think that certain characters know plot points that they don't (yet), didn't seem to understand the motivations of the Council, and definitely misunderstood some of what the characters were saying. Like I said, I usually find some of their commentary insightful. But they missed so many things this time, they weren't even on the map.

I swear, I really don't mind how much you guys dislike the show most of the time, but you have so many misfires in this review that I feel like some of them absolutely need to be addressed.
One: Glory does not know what, or who, the Key is. Dawn's presence in that scene is 100% meant to emphasize that. Why does Glory give a warning first? Because she DOESN'T KNOW what to grab.
Two: Y'all are making a lot of the same points that the show itself is making. IE: "What are *they* gonna do about Glory anyway?" Literally the final speech. :)
Three: Being visited by Glory and being worried for her family's safety is obviously the reason why she was a tad distracted about the Council's shenanigans.
Four: 100% true that Glory didn't kill Buffy because she knows about the Key. See point #1.
Five: the USC reference was awesome. :) Love that.
Seriously, I love your humor, but at this point it feels like you're just reaching for things to complain about. Can't wait to see how that works out for you in later episodes of the season. ;)

I think Checkpoint contains one of the greatest scenes in the whole show when Buffy had the showdown with The Council. She just has no time for their stuck up nonsense, and the arrogant Quentin Travers, and tells them who holds the real power. The sword throwing is excellent. We of course get the reveal about who Glory really is, and that this Big Bad is somewhat different from what they have faced before. S5 just got better and better. A great feeling when Travers has to accept Buffy's terms after the way he treated her and Giles in the Helpless episode from Series 3.

The basic premise of this episode is pretty good. Everyone was treating Buffy as if she didn't matter and Buffy realising that she did was great. The problem is that as you say, buffy and friends are really bad. They kinda just bumble through everything so the watchers were right.

@@geraintthatcher3076 I remember really enjoying Angel's series. Been years so I don't know if it holds up, but back in the day I liked it. And it was one of those interesting shows where most recurring villains, particularly Lindsay and Lilah, were likeble enough. So yeah I'd really like them to review that show slightly more than I wish they'd review deep space nine. And DS9 is my favorite show of all time.

Having watched your STNG reviews, I feel you guys would like Angel a lot, and it's darker and takes more risks than Buffy. It's got similar growing pains to StNG in Season 1, but it really takes off the next Season, hitting a stride in Seasons 3-5.

I also contradicted a college professor who was saying something really dumb and I learned that college professors have control over grading of your test.
The professor was saying that programs from the Macintosh would run on the IBM PC if it weren't for copy protection in the mid-80s to late 80s. This can't be true because they have different processors and different operating systems.
Professors are often martinets. I'd say about a third of them have no sense of humor and are very thin skinned.

Regarding killing everyone if she doesn't get the key, when Glory uses the key it's pretty much going to kill everyone. So that's kind of like saying, I'm going to kill your brother if you don't let me set off this nuclear bomb.
Oh and Buffy is one of the best players in history. The other Slayers did exactly what you said and just did the job.
Buffy is different because she crosses the line and as a result she has built a powerful team of a witch, a vampire, and a demon. And also xander.
And the high school in college drama is her character. It's the setting. It creates constraints that would have to be created in some other way if they weren't in the setting.
Same thing with Dawn being the key. If she wasn't family, then there would be no constraints.
And like Dr Hannibal lecter, Glory has certain disadvantages.
Buffy can't carry a gun because she's still in school and it would be noticeable as wood wearing armor. It would be interesting to see a remake of the concept where she allowed herself light Kevlar armor and some kind of better weapons that were still thematic. Why does she not have a couple of stakes on her at all times ? Though they could have addressed that by recalling that the actual Stakes had to be 3 ft long fire hardened which would be kind of hard to carry around discreetly. However in the series they use everything from pencils to Broken chair legs so that's not true here.

Using the key wouldn't necessarily kill everyone, it would merge earth with Glory's demon world. And according to their established lore, earth used to be a demon ruled world and humans were around back then. Supposedly humans even killed or drove out some of the most powerful demon lords from earth

Kendra a better slayer than Buffy?? She got her own ass killed. By Dru. She wasn’t even a Slayer a whole year. What are you even talking about? Buffy has saved the world, literally, several times already. And probably will a few more times. Buffy kicks ass. Lots of it.
