A lot will depend from your previous start point. I came to the MG5 ( original) from a Kia Ceed and a Hyundai Tucson. Both at the time seen as boring but good value. The MG5 was realistically the only EV I was to prepared to give a go because of the price point. Yes it’s not the best EV out there but it’s really a good car but boring, a bit like me I suppose 😁 If I was to change I may consider the South Korean brands again but when it comes to value for money there’s no competition for MG

I've just seen some comments so here's mine. I haven't got £30,000 to waste on a car, be it electric or ICE. I've just picked up a 2011 Nissan Leaf (Japanese import) for £4100. The insurance with 21 years no-claims is £338. What a car! I'm 60 this year and it's the best car I've ever owned. Utter waste of money, cars......always have been, always will be. My Leaf has 6 bars left on it, giving around 40 miles range. It's only 1 mile to Lidl and my furthest relative lives 8 miles away, so what's not to like? I can charge it up from my PV array in a few hours with the 15A charger that came with it. None of this silly £1000 Zappi nonsense. It's going to be an awfully long time before the infrastructure is in place, whereby you have can charge a 500 mile range vehicle that costs less than £15000. In fact, I can see driverless 'taxis' being here before then. I'd love to know how many new electric vehicles are company car purchases or retired people purchases. The only others are the leased ones......no-one who knows the value of money would stump up their hard-earned cash on one, unless of course they're in the £100k+ bracket.....but even then, it's a bad financial move.

@@garysmith5025 Do you charge your car fully from your panels or are you reliant on the grid? The ONLY reason your electric car could possibly be cheaper than a petrol equivalent, is because you charge it with cheap overnight electricity that the WEF (sorry government) is using to bring about 2030, OR you have plenty of land and at least a 20kW array.. Now shut up and roll-up your sleeve for your booster.

Love you guys. The last 5 mins - both from a car perspective AND on “our” generation - I couldn’t agree more with. I know we’ve been saying it for a while now but unless the big manufacturers (inc. Tesla) up their game (and lower their prices), MG are going to be the main choice for EVs. Just “which one” as you said.
    And musically we’re all shafted.

Were we in the market to replace our 24kWh Leaf Visio, bought for just under 10 grand in 2015, the MG5 might be a valid choice as we're doing 50 miles a day and still prefer to charge once a week, exclusively at home.

If you want or need the space then I think the mg5 is a fine car and good value. I had the previous mg5 long range bought for £26k and was very good value but had a few niggles and quirks eg no cabin preheating, android auto tempramental, auto wiper had a mind of its own, sat nav rubbish. But as a means of getting a load from A to B it was fine. Now the new mg5 looks to have improved the niggles hugely and also looks better, however I eventually settled on a 2022 registered mg4 se standard range in tri coat red for £26,900. I dont really need the extra space nor the long range and I'm happy with my decision. I could have spent a few more £Gs but whats the point? The MG4 drives lovely, still fairly spacious, decent boot and I think its easier to get in and out of, I found the 5 a little low but could have been the seat position. I do prefer buttons to the touch screen, especially as the settings seem to revert to a default every time its switched on but apart from that both are decent cars.

Traction control - it's another thing I can't understand why Tesla as a new manufacturer seems to do so much better than the traditional car makers. In a Tesla with over 400bhp you can just stamp on the accelerator and it sorts it all out and fires you down the road in the direction you point it at a stupid rate of acceleration. In the VW ID3 it fishtails all the way down the road until you back off - maybe more fun if you're hooning around, but a bit disconcerting for pulling out of a junction for a shopping trolley class car.

I didn't and am very happy with my MG. I used to drive my dad's 1991 ford Granada Scorpio. The MG 5 has a similar wofty feel is you drive it in a relaxed way. If you want to burn out the tyres, they would both let you do that. The ford did 12 mpg at times and 28 in cruise control . The world has moved on for the better.

As an older driver who used to drive LR Discoveries/Freelanders I can concur SUVs are a stupid waste of road space. They look butt ugly which is appropriate considering the size of many of the butts you see climbing into them. As for buttons I have seen cars drive straight through crossings even when children are crossing because the drivers are playing with a giant touch screen. Screens are cheaper to manufacture than buttons but potentially much more dangerous.

@@richmaniow I think that the depreciation is pretty much specific to the UK, and it appears to be true for all models.
The UK used car market is very weird because so many people buy on credit/lease plans.
In most other markets used car prices hold up very well, with EVs holding their value even better.
I am not aware of the depreciation expected on the MG 5, but I know that the leasing industry expects the 4 to be particularly good.

@@richmaniow If the rumors are correct this is already causing issues and lots of dealers are refusing to part ex EV's. Also your depreciation , I was reading on Pistonheads there's a chap who spent £34k on a ID3 in August 2022. All he can get for it now is £24k from WBAC, no dealers will touch it.

@@del4668 yep, I'm struggling to see how ( as things stand) the used EV market is going to function on a large scale, just a few years ago you could pick up a new family run-around for £16k, maybe expect to part exchange after 3 years and loose £4 - £5k with depreciation which I know is still a lot but a certain number of households could afford, but to loose £9k - £10k ( if you can afford £30k in the first place) is beyond what a lot current new buyers can afford to loose, I can see the whole new car market rapidly shrinking further..

      From a dictionary:
/ˈwæɡ.ən/ a vehicle with four wheels, usually pulled by horses or oxen, used for transporting heavy goods, especially in the past.
