Dunno if you knew this or looked it up after the fact, but this album was made for less than 1k USD and the original master of the album was lost so they released it in a really low bitrate.

if you didn't know, the number '40,000" in the song "holy fucking shit: 40,000", is referring to the amount of yearly suicides in America, back in 2008 it was averaging on around 40k and now it has even surpassed the 50k in 2023.

I think what you say about the production is valid. After listening to this album for a while, I think it definitely adds to the subdued “depressed” feeling.

Found your channel about a month ago when looking for Sweet Trip reactions with a friend or mine, was really side when I realized you weren’t making videos anymore. Not only do I love the variety of albums you react to, really cool to see someone react to artists like Fahey and The Jesus Lizard, but I also just love the energy you give every album. It’s really cool to see someone who appreciates the art form of music so physically, and there’s not many reaction channels who dissect their love or dislike of an album with as much honesty and specificity as you do. Really great stuff and so happy you’re back even if the upload schedule won’t be consistent.
Been listening to this album for about three years now so I feel pretty comfortable in my opinions about it. I find it to be a seriously flawed masterpiece (oxymoronic sure but I think it’s true). The production is rough throughout the entire thing but it’s something you get used to. Still can’t enjoy Telephony sadly I still think that song is straight ass especially because it’s so much lower than the rest of the album volume wise but it’s also the only real miss IMO. Was sad to see you not love Deep Deep given that it’s probably my favorite on the album. I love the urgently pained vocals and the guitar tone, but I can’t say I don’t sympathize with your issues with it (love the Big Black comp though!). I’m so familiar with this album now but it’s cool because I still pick up new things to love every time I listen. This reaction video is the first time I’ve really “gotten” Earthmover. I used to find it a smidge gimmicky but now it feels like a combination of all the best aspects of the album, I fuck with it so much more now! Would say that this really is an atmospheric listen over anything else, easiest to appreciate at 3 AM in the dark and it is a heavy grower. Can’t wait to see what you react to next, I’m sure it will be interesting :)!

To add on more to an already long winded comment, it’s very worth checking out Dan Barrett’s (one of the members of HANL) other work outside of the band. He really comes into his own as a songwriter with his folk project Giles Corey, and while I’m not insane about it his band Black Wing is pretty cool as well. The production issues on this album are definitely a result of inexperience, both with Dans solo stuff and with this band the production gets much much better with every album.

Actually the band lost all original recordings so this is just some bad backup (heard in one of their interviews). I think all the problems with drums and vocals weren’t intentional. Listen to their second album and you can feel the difference, you can actually hear everything very well
