I agree. Building compost piles for that big of a garden is just not practical versus cover crops and composting in place. I have a much smaller "suburban garden", and the compost piles that I have built are the culmination of a LOT of work from sourcing the inputs, building the piles, watering the piles, turning the piles, wheelbarrowing the piles to the garden. So anyone who says composting is easy clearly has never composted on a big scale. The only reason I haven't given up is because I tell myself that I'm really growing soil, not vegetables.

One thing I've learned working with soil in florida is that you don't want to till it at all. The soil is so thin that it burns off so much organic matter by just one till. You can tell the difference when you don't touch it and just do cover crops. Mine has gone up to 2.5% organic matter doing that. I do have something growing all the time. I have wildflowers growing in it, if I don't feel like growing a crop that year then something is there and is pretty to look at, otherwise I crimp and then plant only the row I'm growing the crop in, the rows in between I leave growing with the wildflowers. This is important in the summer because of all the rain we get , to hold all the nutrients by the plants, otherwise they will keep leaching the nutrients from the soil.
Another good idea for Florida is to make your main gardening just perennials. They keep the ground alive.
We can't believe that you posted this today. We just planted Sudan Grass and Sunn Hemp today along with other cover crops for animal feed and for nourishing our garden! This is great timing!

Why are we planting sorgum?? Besides mass, other reasoms? My chicks totally tore up the back yard, not being moved, and reseeding didn't work, too hot, nit enough rain, a lazy no good waterer!, failure! So, I have more grass seeds, hoping it will take now...

have you observed plants surrounded by nitrogen fixers having more aphids? i have one little apple that i put a ton of lentils around and it has aphids but the other little apple with just a few pea plants doesnt have them. i believe Stefan Sobkowiak said in his video about aphids that plants with excess nitrogen get aphids.
@Ok: You're correct. Stefan has a very good video about ants indicating too much nitrogen. Thanks for the reminder, I just watched that one again cuz I wasn't sure if it was too much or not enough nitrogen. 🤔

Cover crops are supposed to be spread over the whole area not in rows. That's why you're not using many seeds. Broadcast and mow over a few times then till in and plant, will give amazing results
I am growing the grass to cut and carry.
I will try a broadcast area too.
If I had soil that soft I would be in heaven. My soil is mostly clay that clumps.
I have had that too. More fertile but hard to work.

Hey David, have you looked into Korean Natural farming? Look up Chris Trump, the introduction to Korean Natural farming. Very interesting stuff a lot of pioneering in that area.

@@davidthegood what do you think about it? I got a guy up here in Michigan that has some older product that is very potent. I am going to spray a large area I used your advice adding a bunch of innoculates biochar, about a football fields worth I tilled and tilled in all the char and compost, then to break up the clay layer I am adding water soluble calcium. Hard clay 5 inches or so down.

Maybe I haven't been through the whole video yet, but, did you just plant beans out of a regular bag, like from the grocery store?
Yes.
ummmmm, you planted sorghum sudangrass like it was a food crop.... the purpose of that crop is to make as much biomass and nitrogen possible. it shouldn't be planted with the purpose of being able to walk thru rows of it... it can yield 10 tons of hay per acre, you would use 40 to 50 lbs of the grass seed if you broadcast sprayed it per acre. that around .8 lbs per 1000 square feet. that bed you just seeded looks just over 1k square feet so it would need you to have filled your whole cup with the seed and instead you half filled it and then only used about an inch of seed from the cup woefully under seeding that plot for the purpose that sudangrass is meant for. it really doesn't make any sense to not saturate a monocrop of sudan grass when you are planting it to improve your bad soil. imagen how much green hay you could of made to use as mulch for your gardens...
Thank you. I way trying not to overcrowd it. Some plants just don't like being on top of each other and yield worse. I'm experimenting with spacing still.
