    Hi Jonny! Nice lesson!
    As a Brazilian I'm proud seeing the Bossa Nova still is a style that's worth studying.
    I have a hint that will help your next lessons. Bossa Nova, as you already said, is all about rhythm. Bossa Nova was a junction between jazz and samba (also a Brazilian rhythm full of percussion instruments). When you play samba, there is a percussive instrument in particular that is very important, which the name is "surdo". The drums kick can simulate the sound of the surdo when hit this double notes you hear. This double kick is maybe de major responsible for Bossa Nova swing.
    When there is a bass with the gig, it usually plays the root and the 5th notes of the chords, simulating the sound of the surdo, and also the drum's kick. You also can try using this technique playing the piano. You can play the chords and the melody on the right hand and the bass line on the left hand. It might give more swing to the song.
    I hope I could help.

    Of course, you can also add a backing track my Band In A Box. I really would like to see what you could come up with using tracks from them without any of the piano parts, and instead using parts you play yourself.
    I can't read bass clef, so i use Arranger Keyboards and BIAB, and I've come up with some pretty good stuff. I think your students would be happier with the end result, albeit a bit limited because BIAB expects you to play the song the way you've entered it.

    Great! One thing, don't get this rootless G-flat7 (9.51); there is no E-flat or A-flat in G-flat7? Perhaps this is more a pentatonic over g-flat bass with passing notes (e natural from the g-flat 7 chord) and C (chromatic passing note).

    • @andrewsmith4356
      @andrewsmith4356 Před 4 lety +3

      It's a G-flat 13 (Rh plays 13th (same as 6th degree of G-flat scale), 3rd, 9th (same as 2nd degree of G-flat scale) and 7th (the e natural). This is a common voicing for 13th chords serving a dominant or secondary dominant function. For example, a C13 voiced like this would RH a,e,d, b-flat (in descending order). Chopin used this chord a lot near big cadences and resolutions (in major keys).

    • @simonsmatthew
      @simonsmatthew Před 4 lety +1

      @@andrewsmith4356 Thanks for your reply. Seen a lot of V-11 (maj) s' in Chopin (eg Ab triad over a b-flat bass - which would be a V11(maj) of E-Flat); any 13th examples you particularly like in Chopin?

    • @andrewsmith4356
      @andrewsmith4356 Před 4 lety +2

      @@simonsmatthew I don't have any off the top of my head that I prefer, but one that stands out sonically is in the 1st Ballade, after frenzied development section, where the E-flat major theme returns in a big way. The B-flat 13 chord is pretty unmistakable there. As to your reference of something like a V-11 in Chopin, I am less aware of those, and it seems like the chord over the bass note could just be a passing chord over a pedal bass note; but now I'll keep my eye out for places like that. Cheers.

    • @simonsmatthew
      @simonsmatthew Před 4 lety +1

      @@andrewsmith4356 Thanks! I know the piece, but I don't play it. I will look out for it. I agree V11 (maj)'s in Chopin arise from contrapuntal voice leading motion, ie things like accented passing notes. They are everywhere in Chopin, but I like its use in the the late B major nocturne (62/1). The bass in the middle section also seems to be close to bossa nova.

    Great lesson! But what about the second part of the song?

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 4 lety +1

      What about it? The same technique is used there. Take his 7th, ninth, third and fifth parts of the chord and move them around some in the order you're playing them to 'spice up' the 'B' part of the song. The basics are still the basics.

    • @jhn1987
      @jhn1987 Před 4 lety +3

      Gary C The chords on the second part of the song seem more complex as they have more alterations.

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 4 lety +1

      @@jhn1987 So, the technique is the same. Do you know the basic concept of chord structure? A Major chord is the Root, Third and Fifth, i.e., for a C Chord, C-E-G. A C7 chord is C-E-G-Bb, while a CMaj7 is C-E-G-B. The Chorus gives you a couple of more chords, the B9 chord, the Am7 chord, the Abm7, but you work those chords the same way you would work the first set. The B9th is B-D#-F#-A-C#. So, play B-D#-F#-A. The Am7 chord is A-C-E-G. Substitute the same technique. Finally, the Abm7 is Ab-B-Eb-F#. Playing them as 1-3-5-7 the same was as Jonny showed for the other chords will get you the basics.
      However, the Chorus is sometimes a little more upbeat, so you can alter those chord patterns to give you a more rhythmic style, but for now, just play it the way Jonny showed you.
      You can also visit his website for more information, although since I haven't been there, I can't tell you what all he has on it.
