This isn’t talked about enough. Marriage is a good, wonderful thing. However we’ve idolized weddings and marriages, especially in the church. We mustn’t forget that it’s ALL about Jesus. Jim Elliot has some good words on this, too.

Oh... I see. My first thought was that God is stingy just like Eve thought in the garden. But then the serpent implying the knowledge sought to separate them. Therefore what God has brought together let no man separate, a day of innocence and beauty would have been my wedding day. Now it lies in ruins.

It is a shame that John Piper appears to have never actually have studied the Bible or Church history. The reason John the Apostle ended the letter of I John with "keep yourself from idols" is clear and twofold. 1) John was pastor at Ephesus where real worship of idols (mostly statues of the false goodess Dianna) was a constant daily occurrence. Ephesus was the headquarters of idol worship for the goddess Diana. No one in Ephesus had to guess what "might" be idolatry. It was a real threat and most of the Ephesian church were ex-idol worshippers. Don't make this a metaphor. 2) A prohibition against idolatry was one of the few Old Covenant rules placed on Gentile Christians by the Council at Jerusalem in Acts 15:20. It was like saying "Brush your teeth before you go to bed." "Don't worship idols" means don't pray to or worhip false gods especially in statue form like statues of Mary or St. Peter. We have enough sins we need to repent of. Do not create new ones.
The question actually asked was when has a husband become an idol not when has marriage or a wedding become an idol. A husband is only an idol in the rare case that you worship him as above God. His proper place is second only to God Before All Else. You are to "reverence" him Eph 5:33 - a word elsewise only used as due to God and much higher regard than simple respect. He is God's representative in your home and your obedience to him IS obedience to God who he represents. Eph 5:22-33 Most modern wives' failure is not revering their husbands too much, but far too little.

As teenagers my sister and I made a life size dummy and we performed a ritual to invoke the Spirit of ZoSo into it, it was really life like.
One night I noticed one of its hands move slightly so we kept our eyes on it and over a long time the hands would move just after dark, I put my ZoSo into my bedroom and it really began to limber up, the eyes would move and the arms flail about whenever we were alone.
I’ve kept ZoSo over the years and regard him as my special friend and confidant.
Eventually one night I heard a soft sigh and ZoSo whispered to me “I love you Lili”
I have moved him into my bed and sometimes I swear he’s nearly human, I talk to him but he rarely replies, now whenever I have a man stay overnight I put ZoSo into another room but I can feel the jealousy, he’ll always be my best friend.
People claim Jesus is their best friend so I guess it’s the same thing.
