Indeed. I think his role as narrator demands he be the most skillful. He had to sing the correct pitches throughout the reading so the two other deacons would not lose theirs. Did you see him striking a tuning fork somewhere in the video?
Updated comment: A bit of research shows he is Erik Varden (Cistercian). He became an abbot and later a bishop in Norway. He had advanced studies in music and Gregorian chant which explain his skill.

Really!!!!! Of course I did not trade my soul for music. Your misunderstanding is sublime in its totality. The Catholic Mass was why I became a Catholic and this singing of the passion is a great example of one part of it.
He (the narrator) uses a tuning fork, to keep the beautiful sound he makes in pitch...

nope...these chants were compiled long ago and bounded in three books according to the role each one is singing...one for the narrator (Chronista) one for any other person's voice involved in the Gospel other than the voice of Christ (Synagoga) and finally one performing the voice of Christ (Christus)

There definitely is music available for this -- I saw it in the appendix of a 19th century Latin Missal in a library. I don't know where you would get it now, but it's available. The deacon is singing from it in the video.
