  • When I was out to film the "Solar powered Ham Radio for Beginners" video, I thought I'd also make a small video which would show how to use the ATAS-120A antenna with my FT-857D. So, here it is, enjoy!

    I have found out recently that You can actually use this antenna on 75 meters through a tuner and an extended antenna....! if you tune the antenna to the center of 40 meters and add a Approx 17 foot wire lead to the whip Base you can tune all of 80 and 75 meters!!! also I have tuned the middle of 30 meters... and with the same wire lead using the LDG auto tuner tuned all of the 60 meter Five u.s. channels.see my QRZ page of my vehicle with a Icom radio using this antenna and my roof rack with wire lead mounted around it.Now i have the Yeasu 857D working with the ATAS antenna.jim KB1PFL

    Very useful video, thanks. What kind of magnetic mount did you use - is that a custom adaptor you put in for the ground plane wires, or is it part of the antenna base itself? It doesn't look like it needs an electrical connection to the base?

    • @HamRadioReviews
      @HamRadioReviews  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey, thank you, glad you liked my video. The magnetic mount is a generic mount. That is a custom adapter, yes. It is a large diameter washer which I drilled holes for the wires. This particular setup does not need electrical connection. Grounding is made through the wires. You do need an electrical connection to the vehicle if you want to operate /M, as there is no way to have radials when in motion.

    • @HamRadioReviews

  • @Justaguy0420

    This is probably a stupid question but if someone has a 857d with the ldg auto tuner would it be stupid for them to buy the ATLAS antenna? Would it be redundant?

    • @HamRadioReviews
      @HamRadioReviews  Před 4 lety

      Hello, not a stupid question at all. You can just be using the LDG tuner with other antennas. I don’t think the radio can tune the ATAS if you have a tuner connected between them. ATAS is being tuned through current coming from the antenna connector. It is enough to move the antenna. Putting a tuner between the connector and antenna would render this practically useless, I think.

    I live in a condo community. Rules against antenna, so it has to be stealth. I have a wooden deck, nothing above me. Is this antenna doeable? i live on the ground floor. Radials could be a risky maneuver, community property and any kid or adult could roam by and trip on them. Only area i could put wires is below the deck by running them through the deck floor. the deck is 12 long by 8 feet wide. Thank you.

    • @HamRadioReviews
      @HamRadioReviews  Před 3 lety

      I think it would work. Please note that the antenna will not tune without radials so you certainly need them.

    Can you explain me better the gound wires, please?
    Lenght, and what bands are they matching?
    I just bought one atas and would likwme to take the most out of it.
    Thanks

    • @HamRadioReviews
      @HamRadioReviews  Před 4 lety +1

      Sure. Whatever applies to a base station vertical antenna, applies to the ATAS as well. You can choose the band you want to operate the most and cut as many pieces as you want in the length for that band. The antenna will tune across its supported spectrum anyway (40m to 6m). My setup is 4x pieces of wire, of 2,5m each (which is λ/8 for 20m band). I have made W6 and ZL contacts from SV like this, with the antenna on the roof of the car exactly as shown in the video. 73 de SV2RMK!

      @HamRadioReviews  Před 7 lety

      Heh, I did have to go through a learning curve. But as soon as I realised that the menu system is sorted alphabetically, it was easier. Yes, the menu system is a disadvantage on the FT-857D but considering its size, it kind of seems logical. The Alinco seems to be similar in size. Haven't operated one though.

    καλησπέρα καλή μεγάλη εβδομάδα και ελπίζω να είσαι καλά....έχω πάρει και εγώ την ΑΤΑS αλλά δεν κατάφερα να την ενεργοποιήσω...εάν έχεις το χρόνο και την διάθεση θα ήθελα την βοήθειά σου...ευχαριστώ ...Βασίλης sv2esv

    • @HamRadioReviews
      @HamRadioReviews  Před 4 lety

      Καλημέρα και Χριστός Ανέστη! Για να ενεργοποιήσεις την ATAS στο FT-857D, πας στο μενού 1 «EXT MENU» και το ενεργοποιείς στο «ΟΝ». Μετά πας στο μενού 085 «TUNER/ATAS» και το βάζεις στο ATAS/HF-50. Αυτό ενεργοποιεί την κεραία για βραχέα και 6μ. Αφού το κάνεις αυτό, στην οθόνη πάνω δεξιά θα λέει «ATAS» (με κεφαλαία) ή «atas» με πεζά, ανάλογα με την μπάντα που είσαι. Όταν είναι με κεφαλαία, θα μπορείς να τη συντονίσεις. Ελπίζω να σε κάλυψα, 73!

      Haven't tried, to tell you the truth. If it says "atas" (lower-case) and not "ATAS" (upper case) then it won't tune the antenna.
