Thanks for the high quality content. Kevin, I'm amazed by your work ethic and detailed planning (for example when you said how you planned to take a couple of days off and then start looking for a new position on a specific day). For people like me who are about to graduate or are just starting to code, can you give some overall problem solving strategies as well as techniques you use to organize your life and learn different topics? For example, how do you learn problem solving skills, what strategies you used to you go through college, and in general how you organize your life. Thanks a lot again.
@@ninjadotdev Anytime Mohammad I hope you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for the kind words! That's an awesome idea I'd be happy to make a video on that. A few quick tips I would give are....1) have a schedule. If you have a schedule and treat it as such you'll be able to get things / work done. 2) I think sometimes the hardest thing to do is start something and when you don't want to start countdown from 3 and once you get to 0 just force yourself to start whatever it was you said you were going to do. 3) Separate work from other things. i.e. when you work, work hard and focus and when you're not working, don't think about it. In college this was a big thing for me...if I chose to focus for an hour straight most of the time I could get done what I normally would in several hours when I would get distracted, talk to people, check my phone etc. I hope these help!
Hi Kevin, I am Girai from Japan. Few weeks ago I broke up with my gf, got rejected by several companies, didn't do very well at school. I was really bummed out. Last week i found your channel and it's your videos make me start leetcoding again and pull me out of depression. Thank you sooooo much for your awesome videos!
Hey Girai! I'm happy to hear my channel has been helping you! I'm sorry to hear you're going through a rough patch, but things get better! Use this time to invest in yourself and do things that YOU love to do. Keep your head up and keep working hard and good things will come, I'm sure of it :)
Kevin Naughton Jr. Thank you for your kind reply! All I can do is to make myself a better person. Thank you again for your awesome videos and you will also achieve what you want I have my faith in you.
I think getting laid off as a Software Engineer for non-performance reasons is generally a positive thing with a temporary setback. They are cutting their staff due to worsened revenue and thus poor budget. This gives you the opportunity to seek work at a more flourishing business
Thanks for sharing! Getting laid off from my first full-time job as a software developer a few months ago kind of sucked. Still does. I can't wait until I am working again and I hope it feels like the best thing in my career ever...I'm glad I watched your video🙏
I was a casualty of the massive layoffs at Magic Leap in April. I was a software engineer in their Developer Tools group. I got hit with a bunch of personal and family issues after that (including my golden retriever getting very sick then passing away), so I took some time off to manage all of that. I get overly nervous during interviews, and it hurts my performance (my brain disconnects and I shake!). On the other hand, I perform very well on the job. The interviews don't reflect that. My ex-coworkers have great things to say about me and my work. I found myself very down today for several reasons, including still being unemployed and feeling concern about future interviews. This video did a lot to lift my spirits and give me hope again. Thank you!
ArtByAud anytime! I appreciate you leaving this comment and letting me know. Great story Kevin. What you said about being positive and how hard work pays off is all very true. Bad moments like these is imminent and they teach us some of the best lessons; as long as we are optimistic. I wasnt laid off, but Ive come very close to that fear. However, previously I worked in PA and when I decided to apply back to NY i was in a whole new ball game of interviews and like you was rejected so much, until I worked super hard and landed a job. So I guess that last part makes our stories somewhat alike :)
Every lay off or job loss is a new beginning for something much better. That is how see it. Kevin ..you inspire me a lot. Thanks . The first thing I did after getting my second job is, to keep at least 6 months of salary as an unemployment fund. So I can easily search for a job for 6 months.

I worked through the great recession of 2008/2009. It was a really messed up time. I was a consultant at a client for 11 months. My team was scheduled through mid 2009. The company had probably 50 consultants from the same company I worked at. And then Sept 2008 happened and within 4 months, every consultant at the company was gone. It was a crazy time.
Great content Kevin. I happened to notice that your videos are way quieter than any other content that I watch, to the point that if I play anything else after your video my ears hurt :) check your audio levels, or apply some limiter to the audio :)
Thanks for letting me know Kuba I've been having some problems with audio and I've been trying to fix it for a couple weeks now. The problem is if I turn up my voice there seems to be some sort of white noise in the background. I'll keep looking into it sorry about that :(
@@KevinNaughtonJr Not a deal breaker, the video is still good. Maybe try removing white noise in ex. Reaper, it has a lot of included VST's that can help. ReaFir can remove noise, then you crank the volume and apply a limiter so that it's consistent over the whole video. That's what I'd try first.
@@prajmus Yeah I'll have to keep messing around with it. It's also hard for me to know what is too loud / too quiet because my volume is probably different than other peoples'. Thanks for the advice :)

Hey there, Have you ever regretted when you were not able to clear the programming round due to lack of time? How to deal with the quickness of coding?
Your video really motivated me when I was fired from my previous company last year in May. My manager told me that I will not survive in software industry but I have outgrown that phase in my life. I lost my job same day as you. I found another job in the next 45 days.

great vid and thanks for keeping it real for other software engineers I would also like to add update your resume and online portfolio every year and whether you need it or not apply to a few jobs every year or two years it gives you great feedback and worst-case scenario you get nothing best you get your dream job but what happens most often is you will either get a better offer from a different job or your current job will fast track advancement for you to keep you .
So.....finally....I got a job as an android dev... literally this week...the first days seem are confusing for me....m getting a lil overwhelmed ..m doubting my self and so on....Can you give us advice on how to get used to new job as an junior developer? Everything seems a bit weird and It feels a little exhausting for me
Ask to peer program with someone on your team who seems nice. Ask them tons of questions, if you’re junior people will expect you to have tons of questions. I had the same problem at my first job, it’ll take time to get comfortable, just try to make each day feel better than the last. And what you’re feeling is totally normal.
That's totally a normal feeling and I think it's important to realize that! As a junior developer companies are expecting to train you and teach you! My advice would be to relax and be honest...ask questions when you don't understand something and tell people when you need help (after you've tried solving the problem on your own so you can tell them what you've tried). LMK if you have any other questions or if there's anything I can do to help!
