Nissan tends to be overlooked when it comes to off-roading as people always look at Toyota’s and Lexus offerings but one must realize that Nissan and Infiniti also have a strong off-road heritage, today Nissan makes the frontier and Armada/patrol and Infiniti makes the Infiniti qx80 which are very solid off-roaders, i know Nissan doesn’t have a stellar reputation for quality and reliability as they used to but despite that I still consider Nissan to be the real competitor to Toyota unlike Honda which has no 4x4s and only little experience making rwd cars

The early 2000's were their peak with tech and well built cars. After Renault started playing more of a role and Nissan was seeing less of its consumer vehicles being built in Japan their quality overall went down the crapper.

Owned a 2002 QX4 for a year, got it at 108k miles and 19 years old. Loved the visibility, handling, ride, fit/finish, price and advanced gtr awd. Had to get rid of it tho because the navigation system contained the air condition system and buttons would pop off with no replacement - known issue. Also, the biggest problem was rust. There was recall on the Q and pathfinder r50s which was the kiss of death of mine. Love these otherwise as it was reliable when I owned outside of chugging gas. can’t recommend them enough.

Just bought 2002 pathfinder LE fully loaded, and I also have the nav w/ A/C controls on it, the OFF button was missing, and the radio tape deck, BOSE, wasn’t working, so after thinking about it, I looked on eBay and bought the same BOSE tape deck. After having pull out the old and install the new “ factory refurbished” one both front and rear defrost buttons had broken off 😂. I have a toothpick works great for that though.

My dad had a QX4 that I still wish I had got from him before he scrapped it because thew speaker system in that car is unmatched. Bose really nailed it in that car. Everything sounds super clear with punchy low-end. Modern systems sound too boomy in the low end and harsh and hyped in the top end where the Qx4 had effortless clarity. Does anyone have a similar experience to me and maybe know of other models with similar systems?

Both good engines with their relative weaknesses. The VQ put up better hp/tq numbers but they were more finnicky. You have to be on top of the VQ maintenance. Religious oil changes and paying attention to the oil cooler o-ring are important.

I have an 01 coming from another 01 I bought back in 2018 for $500 that I lost do to a collision. The 2nd thermo is for quicker warmup, specifically in colder climate. It only opens at certain temp above normal operating temps. You can gut the inside of the back thermo and leave the gasket/housing for sealing purposes to get more consistent cooling, if you don’t live in freezing climates (I did this since I live in California). The 350z/g35 guys do what’s called the pathfinder cooling mod, the heads receive better flow with the included center tube from the valley(under intake manifold).
I also hate how little the back door opens lol. Infiniti should of put the vk v8 of the same years from the Q45, would of made this platform even more tasteful. Great review👍🏾

    • @SWright1978

I like being different too. Bought my '01 Qx4 with about 75k in 2014. Now has an addt'l 100k added and been cross country twice. Great vehicle with generous power and performs well off-road and interstate. Suspension is soft in back so if you stick some folks/weight back there it will feel those bumps alot more though.
Just had the IACV valve fail so i got the dreaded P0505 but its got new tires and still a great lookin ride so im gonna solder on the new module controller on ECU and replace the IACV (one burns out the other). I recommend just going ahead and changing that IACV if you have not yet as it might save you the ECU headaches and its only $100 for the OEM hitachi part.

I use to have a 2000 Pathfinder, and was overall solid suv, I think the lack of a true lift kit like Toyota and jeep is why the community never gravitated for them. If your not going to rock crawl and just basic off road, I think its a great bang for buck. People steered to the Xterra.

My 2002 has 247K also. I've driven it since 177K. Very dependable although a clogged transmission cooler/radiator caused the last owner's transmission to fail. I had a cheap rebuild done ($1300) and it only lasted a year and decided to spend 3.5K on a 3 year warranted one. It was a tough decision but considering it is a rust free California car with great body/paint and $40K new I went ahead with it. These cars have terrific stock stereos (switch out the head unit with Bluetooth) with their own subwoofer. Greta power. Great road car. Great climber.

I have a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4 that I bought with 173k with a real clean interior. The only issue it had was the notorious oil cooler o-ring that was causing a minor leak that I fixed for $10. I got it for $3500. I got it because it has the mechanical 4x4 shifter (which I prefer). I had an LE lined up but I honestly didn't want leather because most at that age always crack/rip on driver's side seat by driver's door. The cloth seats are actually very comfortable. Engine runs tip top and transmission shifts like a dream. While MPG could be better considering the price I paid for it and the condition it's I'm sure I can get an easy 80k miles out of it and I take care of my cars (also do a lot of my own work on them). Doesn't burn oil, 4x4 works great too. The r50 Pathfinders/QX4s I think are a tremendous value if you can find one in good condition. If taken care of with routine maintenance they are easy 250k ish miles cars. I've seen many with over 300k too.

Just for those coming to this vid more recently, these and most used cars have sadly shot way up in price. Picked mine up for 3400 with 178000 miles on it. Sadly mine had a totally shot front steering assembly and leaked oil. So I’ve dumped some coinage into her, but now she drives like a dream. Kinda reminds me of the 2004-5 Volvo xc90 driving experience really grips the road and feels heavy. Mines also the tricked out model has the dvd player, multi cd player, old sat nav computer all buttons still intact. Only problem left is that I can’t lock the doors or my alarm will go off and won’t stop until I pull the fuse. Ahhhh the joy of old shit. Mine also doesn’t seem to have to much rust, has what almost looks like an undercoating on the frame, don’t know if that was apart of the recall or not. I’m sure I’ve over paid in starting price and repairs for such an old rig but I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t overpriced or a pile of junk in my area.

Great video and I agree. I have a r51 Pathfinder with Old Man Emu suspension. OME is also available for the r50. Toyota's are expensive and Nissan is a great alternative.

Since they have two thermostats, the one that’s hidden is way down in the engine and its just a time consuming process

These "finds" aren't legit as a bargain deal option. $1000. If he actually paid that little. Its like 1 in 100.000 find. Cant find 1 for less than 4,000.

      I have some questions:
      1. How durable is the automatic gearbox? As I understand automatic was the only option available. Does it have way to select lower gear when overtaking?
      2. The 4x4 can be turned on on-the-go or full stop is required?
      3. The car I am looking to buy have 3.5L benzine engine with LPG kit installed. Since gas is hotter than benzine, will it have overheating problems? What about these two thermostats?
I do not worry that much about the lack of power that people in comments mentioned. I have driven Opel Frontera 2.4i 1995 and it had even less power, but still enough when driven hard and properly.
      4. Why gay? Only gay person I personally knew did it for money to buy drugs because he was too lazy to work or steal stuff. He did a quick rot walker or put ding-dong into bum-bum but never lived with another guy like a real couple. I cannot wrap my head around the idea why another guy can be attractive and not girl.
