It would give him an excuse to hit Palestinian people with disproportionate response and ultimately occupy Gaza.
That's stupid. Israel was on the verge of a historic peace deal with Saudi Arabia. Thus derailed that. They didn't want this fight. Hamas was acting on the behalf of Iran who didn't want the peace deal.

So this guy says one of the planners for the Oct. 7th attacks was in an Israeli prison but released a few years ago in a prisoner exchange. This just proves the reason behind Israel not negotiating, when they have look what happens?
The only reason Israel isn’t negotiating is because the US and the UK offer the funds and weapons to continue the brutal occupation and regularly attaching Gaza and West Bank with impunity. But on the question of killing civilians, Mohammed Deif, Hamas' military leader, in his address audio address to the Hamas militants on the Aqsa Storm operation, specifically said "don't kill the elderly or children". It's in the middle of the recording, around the 5 minute mark. As for military aged men and women, I think Hamas' general attitude/policy (whether they want to admit it or not) is that they consider them occupiers and therefore not innocent.
All middle aged Israelis are trained military conscripts. All of those israeli civilians suddenly turned into soldiers after oct7.

I read that a Hamas official had expressed regret at bot securing the breach during the operation for that reason
I dont think they anticipated that, also they did not know about the music festival taking place. I think that is where most civilians were taken by non hamas people. I think this was Hamas biggest mistake but honestly it would not have changed the outcome at all.
If isnotreal had not kidnapped their relatives, ordinary civilians, every day, then the gap would not have needed to be guarded. Ordinary citizens on the other side are no more valuable than Palestinians. Ask the Germans what the prisoners of the camps did immediately after their liberation, so that these people are humane, while over decades of such injustice they had every chance of turning into the likeness of their neighbors, who had long ago lost anything human .
