Over 40 years later, and we’re no closer to school choice.
Milton Friedman was the greatest economist ever.
I went to a one room school in Queensland, Australia. I was in the same class as my older brother; I was in year one, he was in year seven. Our teacher was also the librarian and the principle (we called them "headmaster" back then). My dad would mow the school yard. It was a great experience and I loved it.
My nephew started teaching in an inner city school. He lasted 2 months then left in fear of his life. Although he requested meetings with parents, not even one parent responded.
In 1977 I had to be bused away from a school that was right down the street from us, to a school downtown; the kids from downtown were bused to my neighborhood school. It was switching black and white students. RIDICULOUS.
Try living in Denmark with fixed 25 % VAT on all goods and services, marginal tax rate on 52 %, car tax on 150 % and various other taxes on unhealthy goods. It’s devastating...

If a kid misbehaves bad enough to cause disturbance to the rest of the class, he forfeits his spot at the desk. He would be violating my child's civil rights to education.
Sadly, the Government is now the primary customer for universities. Professors tend to be hired not because of their superior teaching, but based on publications which are churned out...many of which support political hot topics like gov authority due to covid, gov authority to prevent climate change, gov school authority over teaching identity politics including pushes to normalize all manner of sexual orientations and identities.

On one side you have Milton speaking facts, research and real solutions while the other side is just a bunch of mouths making noises.

Mr. Shanker, the teachers' union guy, wondered why the BI Bill gave free education. It wasn't free. Did he ever come under enemy fire? Did he fly tactical aircraft in risky situations? My father did, those guys did, I did and my sons did. We all survived but I flew with ten or a dozen guys who didn't. He isn't off-base about everything, but he's wrong about this.

Albert Shanker, President of the American Federation of Teachers, didn't know what justified the GI bill. Ten or a dozen of the guys I flew with didn't live to take advantage of anything. We were doing well for a year, then last week we lost another Naval Aviator and her student pilot. My father became a mechanical engineer from Northwestern U after jumping out of a burning B-17 at 20,000 feet over Nazi Germany and then sixteen months in Stalag Luft Eins. When Shanker's lived with that, he can criticize. Until then, he'd better shut up.
Agree with most of the video except Milton’s statement about state colleges .In hindsight student loan debt in the US has reached 1.78 trillion dollars and has become an epidemic. State colleges have become a more affordable option for obtaining a higher education. Also in light of the Ivy League college admission scandal from 2019. I believe state college are a better alternative.
If only california had something similar to this in the poorest areas
One more thing they should say to people is that if they cannot financially afford kids they shouldn't have them.
Wow, I did not know that Mr. Friedman went to Rutgers! So did I. He would be disappointed with the cancel culture at Rutgers. That is why I could never support the school in this season. I prefer buying his books to sending money to Rutgers - bastion of liberals.

What are the alternatives?
29:00 he kind of misses the point. Special needs schools are all over the place and parents with kids who have special needs and or behavioural problems would seek out schools specifically to help their child. If there is a demand for those children than schools tailored to their needs would develop.

I would say the students get the worst deal, not the parents. It looks like a bloody prison.
Mr. Shanker (teacher union) is always bringing up minority of problematic kids as his example. What's is the true purpose of educational system - to make kids learn something, or to "rehabilitate" problematic kids at the disadvantage of all other kids?
I'm tired of the communists ganging up on the good people of the series of videos.

PRAISE TO A TEACHER
(The sixth and final year (high school) at the "Prince of Wales" boarding school, Nairobi, Kenya. Year 1957)
We waited for our "Literature" teacher at class time. When he finally arrived, he apologized for being late and he said he was in a meeting to explain a new idea of his. He told us that he had decided to stop teaching us the usual texts.
We were left speechless!
To our perplexities, instead of giving explanations, he asked two questions ...
At the rows to his right, he asked which of us knew Karl Marx …….
after the surprise, one asked where this person lived.
At the rows to his left, he asked who knew Adam Smith …...
one immediately asked if this guy was English or American.
Rubbing his chin, he just said "oh!"
Then he went on to tell us that he understood of our ignorance, despite of our intelligence.
He pointed out that by the end of the year, many of us would be going to university or other destinations, and we knew very little about the current situation in the world. (For example, that in the previous year there was an invasion of Budapest by Russian tanks.)
"My job will be to teach you how to learn on your own, and I will follow you throughout the term."
Then, pointing his finger at me, he said "John*, you will be the coordinator of your half and you will go to the library to research all about Karl Marx." Pointing his finger at Bill* on the left, he told him, that he will be the coordinator of the other half to research all about Adam Smith. Every week we should notify him about our results or problems.
In the fifth week, he checked if we had enough knowledge to present what we had found, and with our positive response, a new surprise arrived.
"You will have to convince the other group of the validity of what is proposed in YOUR research, compared to the OTHER."
I therefore asked him the question ... "How can we compare our research vs theirs if we don't know what the other is proposing?"
He just replied ... "John, you're on the right track, get busy, and let me know when you are ready!"
Our group, after another four weeks, advised that we were ready, while the other asked for the following week. (If they had spent that week to find the negative points proposed by K.M. (as we did for A.S.) the result would have certainly changed. Updated 2019)
The presentation was very interesting, having given a part, to each student in the group the task of presenting it, and Bill did the same.
The group won for the presentation for Karl Marx!
(Privately, I asked the teacher why he had chosen ME to propose Karl Marx, since after studying both ideas, I preferred those of Adam Smith. His reply was that he expected this of me, because I always used logic and not emotions as many do, and wished me not to change in the future. But we also learned from this teacher that one should always be open to listening to all the points made by others, and only then evaluate.)
