    I think in addition to how many times you see a piece, it also makes a difference if you’re seeing it styled in different ways or just the same thing every time. Like for me I never got sick of Dr martens bc I’ve seen them styled really creatively, compared to like ballerina wrap skirts I’ve only seen in balletcore/preppy outfits

    I like that when you script it you seem more confident in your opinion, i feel like in unscripted videos you can say something really clever and smart but then add a "i dont know if that makes sense, im rambling" etc. In this video i really felt like you committed more which i liked. Love all your vids tho :)

    I don't pay attention to trends at all, but I love the way you throw an outfit together with ease (it seems) and mix and match so many pieces to make different outfits. You influence me to think outside of the box and try to enjoy my clothes again!

    i learned the hard way (around 9th grade) that i had no pieces i actually liked or could wear often, so i switched how i approached buying clothes. i still bought trendy clothes (like my air forces and platform converse) but only after i debated over buying it for a while, if i still was eyeing it 3-4 months later i realized i would genuinely really like it. it was really just switching how i approached consumption. but this uniqueness theory is still prevalent, the UO pink nirvana sweatshirt that everyone and their mother has became super popular about a year after i bought it and it made it feel so much less unique and fun, something i liked wearing bc i got compliments on it everytime i wore it and never really saw anyone else with it became something that everyone has. the uniqueness of that piece was gone and it made me feel like i needed to find some other unique thing even though i genuinely love the “basic” pieces i have

    something interesting I have noticed as someone who lives in Texas is that when you unplug from socials and take a look around, most people are between 1 and 5 years behind when it comes to fashion. I don't dress very ~out there~ as far as fashion goes, but I regularly have people tell me that I dress in such a unique way. when there's a drought of fashion in your every day life, it becomes so much more fun to experiment without taking the content influence you. consider deleting instagram, it makes fashion so much more fun.

    This is a really interesting conversation and I have been loving these more critical pieces from you! I am taking an undergrad class right now (at 32) called Culture, Power & Societal Change and we talk a lot about social constructs and one of the main social constructs I’ve been thinking critically about has also been fashion, mainly because it has such a grip on me. Even though I thrift 90% of my outfits, I’m still looking at how I have ascribed meaning to certain styles and more so what those styles communicate about me. There is so much I’m still unraveling about women’s oppression, gender stereotypes, class/status/clout and how these aspects are informing my choices in subconscious ways.
    I think that the whole paradigm of “everything is trending so nothing is trending” has actually spurred a lot of reflexive thought among people like us who are interested in “alternative” fashion. There is such a strong human desire I think to be unique and to signal to others that we’re not fashion sheeple so if everything is trending it makes me feel like everything I wear is instantly banal. Which is an excellent example of how what society says about fashion impacts our personal choices and feelings about it, even when we’re trying to reject it in some way. A good example of this is punk culture, which actually became a huge trend and signaled to others what group you “belonged” to.
    I think until we become truly liberated from being influenced (and I don’t mean just social media, I’m talking from all of the big corporate/designer/celeb fashion influences) that there will always be subconscious attempts to fit in in some way bc it’s human nature to belong/survive/find groups to feel safe. I could keep rambling but this is a CZcams comment 🙃 lmao

      I think another thing to think about with culture & fashion is along with gender is also age because I love seeing older women like late 40s to early 70s how they dress because they have lived through decades of fashion changes & they take from each decade in a way that’s different from how young people do it.
      I’m in my early to mid 20s and you’re in your early 30s but I have also seen women in their mid to late 30s talking about how liberated they feel within their fashion choices along with life in general. I don’t know how to add to this but it’s some thing I thought about while reading what you said.

      Great points, especially about the effect of the everything/nothing trending paradigm on people who want to set themselves apart. I feel the same way (sometimes, sometimes I just don’t care because I’m too busy worrying about other things and putting together an outfit I like, regardless of how derivative it might be, is a comforting antidote to the chaos of the world). Also love that you’re taking that class a bit later in life! It seems like you’re probably getting more out of it than the average undergrad (or maybe I’m just speaking for myself at that age 😅)

    I think this is such an interesting idea. I definitely feel this was more of an issue for me when I was younger and just starting out actively curating a persona that I felt comfortable projecting onto the world. I felt this need to be unique but, like Laini said, not too unique and it was pretty exhausting. I found the only thing sadder than dogmatically adhering to trends was actively going out of your way to ignore trends that u may actually enjoy all in the pursuit of the ever elusive idea of uniqueness. As if they aren’t 2 sides of the same coin. The desire itself isn’t something I want to pathologise. I think it’s innate to the human experience that we feel and want to feel a sense of primacy and like we are special or the centre of something but I think it can go too far and probably links to the hyper individualist culture a lot of us are living in. Now I’ve found more of a balance, I suppose it helps that my sense of self isn’t so intertwined with a few specific areas anymore, where I feel unique enough but I also enjoy finding myself (say sense of style) in other people and that being a collective experience. It doesn’t rlly feel threatening anymore. It also probably helps that I don’t have tik tok so I don’t see as much of it. May have gone off on an unrelated tangent but I think it’s relevant :)

Sometimes I feel like downloading it again for using it in an other way like no for you page, just the people you follow and going to their profile instead of scrolling BUT at the same time i've never felt such freedom in my way of dressing up since I deleted tiktok. Also I start to feel the same with insta with the new feed thing where you can only see 4 pictures of ppl you follow and then it commercials or random ppl. I love youtube because you get to see better content (imo) bc it's carefully curated but still true to youtubers and you get to choose what you want to watch, it's really calm compared to other social medias

    I liked hearing your thoughts compiled like this, with many points brought up in former videos all consolidated into one context. It's a good format, and I'd like to read your thoughts in blog-format too! I love your approach to fashion, exactly because it feels human, worn in, personal, and fun. Not mass-produced, not fame-hungry, not uncomfortable sucking-stomach-in type of content with the smell of plastic wafting through the screen from the freshly mass-produced polyester clothes. I'm especially into your vibe in videos around your pregnancy and life as a mom, there's a level of cut the bullshit I think works really really well to balance the frilliness of fashion talk hehe. This is so interesting because I experienced this as well. Because especially vintage/maximalist fashion is so on trend nothing seems individual anymore, which led me to buy clothes I didn’t even like for a while just “to feel something” and especially be unique. Now I’ve stopped and started to wear basics, which I had never done before. But with overconsumption fashion at the moment feels so overwhelming and stressful that I feel the most me, when just wearing a basic shirt and jeans.

    I actually have the opposite sense, where I like specific items because it makes me feel more connected to people and makes me feel a sense of belonging. For example, having air forces, the lulu jacket, and bath and body works mists. It connects me with my inner child's desire to fit in. At the same time I love having my own personal identifying style, but I like to pull from all different trends and styles to kind of form my own take on 'basic' pieces. And it's not always the most original, but it still feels like me, and I'm happy to be relatable to others.

Something that I noticed is that some people don’t dress in clothing that they actually like and enjoy, they specifically put on certain clothes and pieces just to look different from others and not fit into trends if that makes sense. It’s hard to differentiate on social media if that person genuinely loves the pieces they’re wearing or if they’re just trying to seem like they’re better than others while still kinda seeming the same bc OTHER people have the same idea!

  • @ownprivatetrap
    @ownprivatetrap Před rokem +5

    I think maybe another reason why you feel inundated with a specific style on tiktok, insta, interest, etc vs something like youtube or even a blog is short form vs long form content. When you are scrolling through tiktok you're going to see 10 different people style uggs vs one person styling them 10 different ways. I think short form content has led to a type of oversaturation that just leaves people overwhelmed and over stimulated.

    I’m happy to be past caring about trends. The 70s was a decade with a lot of trends: miniskirts, maxi skirts, maxi military- style coats, hip hugger pants, bell bottoms, poor boy sweaters, shag haircuts. There were two very popular trends that I refused to wear: hot pants and ponchos, even the poncho my husband brought me from San Francisco. I hear Lucy! Anyway, I wore short shorts all my life, but hot pants (and with white boots, ugh) were what 50-year-old ladies wore with panty hose under them.

    Laini just had this exact thought walking through the mall I work at. I was wondering why so few people branch out in terms of fashion. But realistically what’s trendy on social media is simply not as accessible or practical as shopping for “basic clothing.” And honestly it’s probably not very healthy for those of us who are into niche fashion to compulsively over consume clothing. I really love watching Hannah Louise Poston’s channel because it challenges trends and consumerism. And of course I love watching you because styling is an action, not an idea you can buy despite being advertised that to our demise. Anyway, I hope you’re having a lovely day

    I would argue that everyone loves and enjoys something that isn’t the hottest thing right now. In the online fashion bubble it may seem like people are all confirming to the trends but in real life most people wear pieces they have/love. With uniqueness I think it also really depends on how much someone is comfortable with standing out, some people don’t want to draw much attention to them. And there are also people that just try so hard to be “unique” or “different” that they don’t let themselves enjoy anything when it’s “too mainstream”. The same with music.

    THIS! I love to know the trends and pick the ones I hate 😂 I know my aesthetic and it’s whether or not current trends fit them… I dress to fit my style/ face/body type. When you look good and feel confident in an outfit that’s when people start to copy you. That’s what makes you the trail blazer instead of the follower.
    I discovered this when neons were trendy a couple years ago… and I realized I look terrible in neons. From there, I only cared what represented my personality instead of what was in style.

    I DO get to choose what I watch on TikTok. There are videos that are "recommended," then there are videos from creators I follow. All I have to do is switch to the ones I follow; then I will see only their videos. I don't watch much fashion content on TikTok; what I watch is either really "out there"--it's just fun to watch but I'd never copy it, or it's men's fashion.
    I do think you have your own unique style. I watched a video about Jane Birkin the other day because of that basket you like to carry (and no, I don't carry a basket as a purse)--but yeah, her carrying that basket was to a certain extent her revolt or protest against the fashion of her time (but she also just liked carrying a basket). She was sometimes denied entry into French restaurants because she was carrying a basket, and she didn't care. Other girls made fun of her growing up for having a boyish figure, yet she became the ultimate trendsetter just by embracing who she was.

    I feel like we used to associate fashion as a really difficult visual language to decipher (so many people make fun of couture as impossible to understand), so I think part of it is just thinking anything that is difficult to decipher is somehow = more prestigious, someone with a higher “fashion level” if that makes sense.

    Interesting take on this topic - I do like hearing your thoughts bc it’s totally different from my own. I honestly don’t dwell on other peoples outfits and then feeling the need to be different / any comparisons. I truly just wear what I like, and what makes me happy. Whether those things are trendy, and in style or not. I love looking at new trends - and seeing what fits feeling ‘me’ and wearing it - even IF a ton of other girlies are wearing that too, or if nobody else thinks it’s cute. I dress for ME without comparison. Even if I do notice trends / new IT items I don’t the pressure to be ‘different’ because if I’m wearing something that makes me happy - other people ALSO wearing it shouldn’t change my own self image. Just my own thoughts ❤

    I loved hearing your thoughtful perspective! Thank you. I found myself getting caught up in that feeling of wanting to be ahead of the trends while I was in school, or just surrounded more with others who care about fashion. I do generally stay off tik tok, which makes it easier for me now to dress in a way that feels inspiring to me and makes me feel good, as opposed to dressing for another persons gaze or to make an impression on someone else. As I entered into my mid 30s and motherhood I am more able than ever before to not care about what anyone else thinks of me. I just want to dress in whatever my own personal version of “cool” is, for myself and myself alone. While I still enjoy a fun trend here and there, my journey into spirituality and energy has me looking at self expression through a new lense (what colors open certain chakras or balance my current energy). The more authentic I can be the more fun I seem to have

    Honestly I found this video so interesting. And we’ll researched! Even though a big part of what makes me enjoy your channel so much is your charm and quirk that comes out in casual dialogue and makes you feel like a friend is talking to you, this is equally entertaining and enjoyable. Also I love the video idea, I think a big part of what makes you feel unique/basic and all the things in between is your environment. When I was an art student in a fine arts program full of creative people I was constantly pushing myself to come off as cool and unique and interesting in my style and I never felt like it was enough, sort of like what you are saying about the weird girl trend making the sky the limit and if everything is weird does that just make nothing weird etc. and fast forward to my corporate job with a dress code I feel like my tattoos, totes and faking honestly everything about me makes me unique and alt. In the context of that environment. Now I’m at a very creative job again and sewing and I’m seeing myself crawl back out again and relearn my own limitless with person styling. Anyways love u and ur vids always ❤

    another factor I think in feeling like a piece is overused is that social media algorithms are literally showing you what they think you’ll relate to and enjoy, so if you like one ugg styling video the algorithm will probably recommend you another one, and another, but it makes you feel like everybody and their mother is wearing it

  • @crystalcastillo7575
    @crystalcastillo7575 Před rokem +1

    Yeah .. I had to stop following so many influencers b/c they would always make me feel like I’m not doing enough with my outfits. Like I would typically wear sweatpants (b/c I hate jeans nowadays) and a cute t shirt or baby tee and feel sooo cute BUT when I scroll through Instagram or Tiktok and see people who are layering super nicely or super “on trend” I begin to look at my outfit ... like “aww man maybe I didn’t do enough” even if I initially felt good.
    I know it’s more of a self esteem thing but I think trends in general just completely distorts my thought process when it shouldn’t.
    All in all, it’s fun for me to see what’s “trending online” but.. it’s way more fun to wear what I feel good in and admire trends especially micro trends (like platform Uggs etc) pushed by influencers from afar. And once they’re out of style.. see if I still like them enough to buy. By doing that.. it’s definitely better on my pockets too 😂
    Interesting Video Laini keep them coming !! X

  • @soph-mc1qr
    @soph-mc1qr Před rokem +1

    I can relate to this so much. For me, it's a little different as I don't use social media that often but I still see a lot of these trends on the streets which makes me "dislike" them quickly.
    I live in Berlin, so people usually wear whatever and that´s great. I've realized that any aesthetic tho somehow becomes basic and interchangeable when a lot of people wear it, no matter how out there the fits are. For me personally with those crazy and more unconvential fits/weird fashion core you see online it´s such a small range of inspiring/i love it to it seems pretentious. I don´t like my brain jumping to "pretentious" cos fashion should be something you can express and present yourself in a way you want to but i can´t get rid of that thought somehow. I also just see it so often that it doesn´t even surprise me anymore and it all becomes kind of the same thing.

    This video got me to think about the issue of trends. I like think of trends as an amoral force like wave patterns or rock patterns (if I were to use an environmental metaphor)
    They’re just something to react to. Whether you opt in or opt out depends on the type of person you are and what drives you.
    Certain personality types need to feel unique and different (see enneagrams, I think your a 4?😊) and other personality types likes to feel validated by a larger community (I think that’s me, so I find absolute delight in the mainstream and can still feel unique through mass means)
    (Or maybe this is a general human truth everyone feels, what community however is a different conversation)
    Idk
    That’s my brain dump 😂
    Eitherway, thanks for the video - really got me thinking, where I otherwise wouldn’t have

    I’ve struggled a lot with finding what I actually like intermixed with hard times where i’m not feeling or looking imo great. I’ve dressed in a less extreme “weird girl core” since hs, it just seems like the people online do it better because their whole lives and income are focused on have the money to buy anything. And I have not been comfortable with my body just in recent years.
    In regards to the Prada bag.. I work at Trader Joe’s rn where there is definitely some rich people that come through.. my friend and I who both of us grew up quite poor were talking about how we probably would never wear a designer bag. It’s too polished, impracticable, and just would be out of place with our styles and personalities.. that being said, we both work at Trader Joe’s rn and more often then not people with the posh outfit and designer bag are the people who are inconsiderate and rude (young and old).
    It’s hard to detach the two for me right now.

    I really don’t like how Bella Hadid it credited for everything in fashion including the weird girl aesthetic. Looking through all of her outfits she seems like she is the opposite of the weird girl aesthetic but because she put on one outfit that was different she overshadows all the other influencers who actually have the style. Not to mention the examples show a lack of diversity. Also wouldn’t call the outfits ugly, they may not be mainstream and they are unique but I wouldn’t call them ugly. At least for me the style is more about wearing things and outfit that make you feel good and pretty even when they are a bit wild

      I agree! I think the weird girl core could be it’s own video so I didn’t want to go to deep. I just used pictures from the viral tweet about it, I didn’t want to call someone “weird girl core” who maybe doesn’t think they are.
      Also agree the outfits aren’t ugly, I said it in quotes but was blocked by the pictures!
