  • eBay is a great idea on paper, and I’ve had good experiences using the site, but the growing prevalence of eBay scammers has turned it into a shady marketplace. I don’t feel safe on eBay anymore.
    But sometimes you don’t have a choice. As a buyer, some items can only be found on eBay, and as a seller, eBay might be the most profitable platform for you to sell on. If you must use eBay, then you must be wary of eBay scams.
    Here are the most common eBay scams to know about: three as a buyer, six as a seller, and one that applies to all eBay users.

    Regarding the scam where the buyer claims s/he received an empty box, your post office receipt will have the weight of the parcel on it. When the dispute is open, carefully inquire what was in the box - if they say "nothing" then you can point to your receipt with the weight at the time the parcel crossed the post office counter. This happened to me and I had a delightful time sending the sheriff after the scammer.

      I think it happens vice versa. I bought a used book online and received a torn big brown envelope with the postage details enclosed in a regular sized envelope. I am still so made. I filled out an ebay form n no one has replied. I contacted the seller who claimed to have put the book in a brown envelope. I am really outraged. It would have been better getting a new book. Now, I still have to purchase the book n lost my money. I am never ever using ebay. No way

      I'm just glad your sheriff does something about it...I've heard lots of stories in the uk where police don't care, for £3 purchases/scams it just wouldn't make sense for the police to look into it....it makes sense why they wouldnt but it's hella annoying, especially if this happens every week for small sellers then that £3 extra hassle can really affect the business, depending what it sells...if the police won't help and ebay won't...what are you supposed to do???

      How would taking a picture of you putting the item in the box prove anything? You could easily do that and take the item out, put rocks of equal weight to said item then send it. Then when they say it was a box of rocks you could defend the dispute by sending eBay a picture of the item in the box before you took it back out.

    As a seller, I have had #7 happen to me twice in the past 5 months, regarding vintage collectible phonographs I sold. They were packed very well, I took pix of the packing job, and shipped them insured. Both sellers sent me pix of the item now broken, which I knew was impossible, so I simply told them to make a damage claim with USPS, which would require them to bring the item and all packing into their local Post Office for careful examination. That was the last I heard from those scammers!

Now I’m retired and thinking of reselling, but in 20 years eBay still doesn’t appear to value sellers… so I won’t dive back in.

    Never pay by check or money order as a buyer. If the seller asks you to its a scam. Never accept check or money order as a seller, you increase your odds of getting scammed. Never accept an offer for more money, you are getting scammed. Never complete a sale outside of eBay or directly through PayPal. If the buyer asks you to you are getting scammed. If you are the seller this is outside of eBay's regulations and you again risk getting scammed.

    For the "empty box" scam as a seller: When I send an item out, I always get a receipt from the post office, or UPS. When I drop the item off, they weigh the package and the actual weight gets printed on the receipt. If the buyer claims that you sent them an empty box, you'll have the receipt proving that the box weighed much more than an empty box when it was dropped off. I've never actually had this happen to me as a seller but it's a good practice to follow.

    We always write details such as name, weight, and package dimensions and sometimes other details under where the postage label goes. When there is a problem we ask the buyer to provide the information to us so that we can handle any return problems right away. The label already has the weight on it, so it should always match. We have found out with this method that at least once a year, we do make a mistake on our end when someone might say they ordered two of something, but only got one item. First thing we do is check that weight against what it should have weighed, plus we do a quick inventory count on that particular item. Yes, I personally have made some mistakes. We only sell on eBay and have for more than 20 years.

    I was victim to scam #1, but for a small ticket item. The seller was selling a new blood pressure cuff at a price slightly better than other sellers. Their account was fairly new, but they did have some positive ratings (I'm sure they were bogus). The selling was happy to write me back and explain that the item was coming soon... it was not. I did launch a complaint and was able to eventually get my money back. Weeks into the process the seller's ratings changed to mostly negative ones, then the account went dark. Apparently, the scammer took photos from other sellers for random items that you would think would normally not be scammed (not phones or game consoles). They then posted them at a slightly better price making it an "easy" decision to buy. By the time the buyer was aware of what was going on they were long gone.

I send pictures of all my sold items. The biggest scam you missed out is the damn stupid e-cheque. It takes sooooo long to clear and can pend for a month, most get annoyed and send package and they cancel it. Thankfully you have there home address and well.. be inventive 😅

    Another defense against buyers who received empty package. Make sure you get and save the USPS receipt. It has the weight record there. Another scam use by thieving buyers is using the biggest ebay loophole. Even if you don't allow returns, all the buyer has to do is to request a return saying that the item doesn't match photos and descriptions. Then they sit back and wait. Then they open a case and eBay immediately gives them the money back. EBay takes it from you, keeps the selling fee, and the buyer keeps the item. It takes weeks to get the money back but the buyer has the money and the item. Nice scam!

    One I (living in Europe) have come across a couple of times is people who claim to ship from within the EU but actually ship from somewhere else, usually China or non-EU eastern Europe countries. This means the buyer will have to pay about 25% taxes and duties so naturally you want to buy a product that ships from within the EU or at least expect it to be cheaper accordingly if shipping from somewhere else.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  Před 3 lety

      Not so clear cut though - I come across lots of Chinese sellers that use a UK shipping hub, for instance, so it takes a few weeks to arrive there, then gets forwarded onto you. There's no taxes to pay on those. If it does come direct from China, it really depends on the country. I hear from German colleagues that they often have issues.

I know I had inspected the jacket before shipping and had all zippers zipped. She demanded a partial refund so she could "get the jacket repaired". I referred her to the return process. Well, she didn't like that and bantered. She finally settled for a return so I'm now awaiting the jacket, wondering if she will purposely damage the jacket to match her untruthful complaint. And...I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to return a jacket that had zipper damage, choosing to "get it repaired" instead of a full return? As an HD rider, I've bought tons of motor clothes, paying high dollar at retail for quality and performance. There's no way that zipper was torn in 3 pieces.

    Scammers are tricky, sneaky, they like to confuse and are everywhere, one as an individual can take many precautions but at the end of the day when you make a payment or a deposit to a complete stranger there is always the fear that something will go wrong, even if you do it on some platform that offers a buyer protection program, it is not a guarantee that you will not be scammed nor does it guarantee that you can get a refund. What you need is an intermediary, someone who takes care of the money and is in charge of giving flow to the transaction and will not release it until you are satisfied, it would be the same as a seller, as long as you do your part correctly you can be sure that the intermediary will give you your money, no matter the buyer says. I dont mean to promote or advertise anything, I just wanted to tell that I am currently working on a proyect that is conceived with the sole purpose of ending scams once and for all. I won't share any link here because as I say this is just a mere comment, not advertise, but you can find our project on facebook by searching ''We agree App'', from there you can see more information. I had people attempt to scam me there when I went to sell stuff. They would get the package, damage it super badly and often will either hold the item hostage or make death threats. Sold a rare pc case and the thing was a few pounds. He shows me photos as if it was ran over by a Peter built then he makes death threats, sends me a photo of his house, claiming that if anyone sets foot there he’s stab them then he switched his stab threats to gun threats. We looked into it and found the card used was under a woman’s name while meanwhile we found his buying history just to find out he’s “building a dell” which was our term for a paper weight of mass proportions and a post on how he “rolls bigger blunts than cable sizes” they not only suspended him but told us to disregard his refund request as it was not my fault on what happened after that package left my hands. It was either him or the people delivering it and based on how bad the damage looked like it was done purposely. Him and another buyer wouldn’t even initiate a return because not only did they want a refund plus shipping back they wanted me to pay them to get the item back. Had to request a refund on a tv part because the item was listed as working only to find out the item is not functional.
    Sellers try to place the product under “no returns” thinking that will save them from refunds but forget that eBay has a grantee where if they realize things are a scam there will be a refund.

    Common scam: Seller's price is way too high. Eg: LED Globe worth $6 is offered for $37. They are preying on naive purchaser who BELIEVES every thing on E-bay is a bargain.

    I bought a 16-pack of plastic file storage boxes from ebay. I received 12 boxes and the seller told me the other 4 were on their way. According to the lasership tracking number, the final 4 boxes never shipped and it's been a month. I had ebay call me and they never resolved the issue.

    I live in India. I have never bought anything from eBay as Flipkart and Amazon is very famous here and the return policy is amazing. But i want to buy a refurbished samsung tablet from eBay. Most of the sellers are from US. Will it be safe for me???

    This video is misleading with so much info. Looks like you didn't actually go through any of those examples yourself.
    As a seller you will be screwed by eBay even if you photograph or video anything. From empty boxes scams to claiming item was broken, the seller will loose every case. eBay will argue that they weren't there when you took the pictures? How do they know you didn't take the pictures of the item in the box and then removed it and resealed the box? They will always and I mean always side with the buyer

    Sold a phone for $500 never got the money. Tried messaging them and they never messaged back. eBay never listened to my report. IC3 ignored it. At least the phone was used

    I'm buying PS1 games on Ebay U.S and I'm from the Philippines. I will have them be shipped to my Grandmother's address in the U.S and have her send it to me here in the Philippines. Do I advise her to open the packages first?
    Also, what if I test the discs here and it doesn't work, can I still ask for a refund? (Let's say a month has already passed as it will be shipped internationally) 😅🤔

    It’s so sad this things are happening. There are scam sellers and buyers. I’ve been scammed a few times as a buyer, I don’t know as a seller.

    Ebay doesn't allow checks or money orders. You have to pay with card when the item ends

    The bank has a fraud protection department. You can have them check out the check first to see if it’s good. I know because I work for a financial institution.

    Can I ask a question. Im in a bit of a panic. I live in Canada, and on ebay, I sold a $2000 to a buyer in Japan, and he messaged me to tell me that I sent him the wrong guitar! He even sent pics of a different guitar that looks used and beaten up, and worth nothing. So now, he opened a case where I have to pay for shipping and duty fees if I want him to send me the guitar back, but I'll end up getting that beat up guitar he's trying to scam me with! What do I do??

      I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that's exactly why you don't sell valuable things on eBay - especially not to international buyers . Unless you've taken a video of you packagaing the item securely, and the tracking label being applied, and shipped, it's really your word against theirs. eBay is going to side with the scammer, and you're going to lose out on return shipping. Sorry.

    I imprint my merchandise with an invisible trademark (visible under a black light) and inform the scammer of such if he tries a switch. It has always stopped them.

    I sold my first eBay item the other day and I completely forgot to record shipping it out but what's good for me is is they were Air Jordan shoes so they were sent to authenticator, since eBay is authenticator already authenticated them and reship them to the buyer that should cover me from the buyer trying to scam me and say there was no shoes in the box correct??

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  Před rokem

      Sorry, we have no experience with an "authenticator" feature for branded goods. You sure that wasn't a scam?
