  • Should you replace your treble hooks with single hooks? Watch this video and decide. Lots of pros and cons to both types of hooks.

One of my first times striped bass fishing in an estuary after dark during the Spring Run, I landed a fish and attempted to grab the fish in the mouth with my hand so I could remove the treble hooks from the fish's mouth. I was using a big rapala lure with three treble hooks. The fish shook, and I got hooked in the thumb, while the fish was still attached to the other treble hook. Didn't have a head lamp at that time, so had to pull the hook out of my thumb and then the fish, while holding a flashlight in my mouth. Didn't have pliers either. Needless to say, I learned a few things that night. Won't make that mistake again! I was able to keep fishing that night, and the fish swam off, but my blood was all over my clothes and the rod and reel.

Unless someone is desperate to land fish or fishing for meat and know that everything they hook will go in the box, I don't see any reason for trebles to be necessary. Inhaling one or both trebles is dangerous for the fish (and likely lethal) and for the fisherman as well. Not good for conservation. Not good flopping around a deck. Inline hooks are the way.

    Excellent breakdown, thanks Dave.
I wish there were an easy way to determine hook size, such as a manufacturer recommendation on the package, etc.
I guess there’s too many nuances to make that dependable.
I’ve been switching lures to single hooks, and the only way through this that I could find, was to buy an array of sizes, and compare, and contrast.
Over time, I’m developing my own list, to suit the lures that I use.

If I am snagging for mulet I am using a treble only. Other than that using a treble, I will use inline. You keep your line tight you minimize your risk of a fish throwing your hook, plusv the damage is minimized.

Do the inline singles swim weedless...fish a fairly grassy area and get frustrated having to pull the grass off the treble everytime....

This set up doesn't totally mitigate weeds clumping up on your hook, just makes it less likely. I've only used singles in saltwater not in freshwater weedy situations.

Omg. I had a rig with a 2oz sinker and a single hook fly back at me at mach1 after a smallmouth shook loose and the sinker hit me on the side of the head and the hook stuck in the lobe of my right ear. Can't imagine a treble with a fish on it. I think I was like 8 years old when this happened.

How'd the whopper Plopper work out?

Worked ok. I only used it for a total for an hour last year and caught a few. I'm going to try it again this year with the single hooks.
