I've made this combination many times but I added mashed sweet potatoes. Your channel has the most authentic Southern recipes, I think. I appreciate you sharing your recipes; many are similar to what I grew up eating. Next to chicken and dumplings, fried pork chops are among my faves.

Whippoorwill Holler same here! I grew up in the Deep South and love southern cooking, at which my mama wasreally good. I moved to LA back in the 1960’s and learned to love real Mexican and Chinese food, as well as some others. Then I began dating the executive chef at a Sheraton hotel there and learned a lot about fine dining recipes. I lived in Florida in the 80’s and love pretty much all seafood. I got a great job in South Georgia running a guest house on a plantation. Already having had my own restaurant and catering business and been kitchen manager at a facility in Florida, I had learned a lot about cooking by then and got to cook and serve all kinds of great stuff with someone else’s money. And I moved to Seattle in ‘96, where there is a lot of good seafood and food from all over the world. The point is, so far, I haven’t found ANY type of food I don’t like. Southern is for sure my go to for comfort food, though, and I still have it often. And I will be trying the fried cornbread, for sure.

Thank you so much for explaining the difference between fried cornbread and hoe cakes - I called myself going to make some fried cornbread for supper the other night because I was out of flour for biscuits and I and ended up with the biggest mess! - Of course, I used milk instead of water (and I had my batter way too thin) - I ended up with burnt cornbread corn chips! (LOL) - They were awful and I had the biggest mess! - (It is funny now, but at the moment, I said a few words, but the Lord still loves me) LOL
Thank you again for the video and I will try my hand at making friend cornbread again (I do love it!) Seems like my Grandmother made them all of the time and for supper, you had the choice of a biscuit or fried cornbread.
Praying that you and Mr. Brown are doing well and staying healthy! - God Bless you both & your families! - Lots of love from Atlanta, Georgia

Oh Lori you have made my week, I have been wanting the recipe for fried cornbread. So many recipes are somewhat like my momma's but not exactly. This is her same recipe I remember watching her fix it but didn't know the exact amount. She never really measured so I was stumped. I now know what she did and used, wish I would have paid more attention while I was still at home. I have most of the recipes but this is one I failed to get. Thank you so much, your good is so the good I grew up eating. God Bless you. Y'all stay safe at your home love and hugs to you both.....

What a meal! It's just like my Colorado farm-raised mom made for our big family, many times, for many years. Her repertoire of delicious fried breads was included with entrees, or served as snacks. I make 'fry bread' using the recipe she learned from the Ute side of her family. Topped with homemade pimento cheese spread, or a spicy shrimp dip, it is my preferred appetizer. The batter has good texture from coarse ground cornmeal with steamed corn kernels and finely diced green onions stirred in.

I like to slice the cabbage into big round “steaks.” Line them up on a sheet pan and brush them with olive oil: then season them with salt, pepper, garlic, and whatever else you’re in the mood for, and roast them in a hot oven until the edges are nice and brown. Fast, easy, delicious, and your whole house doesn’t smell like cabbage. 😃

I just wish the world wasn’t feeling so crazy right now but other than that we’re good. I haven’t really noticed any change in our lifestyle as far as kids being home and husband being home from work because I’ve been sheltering in place with Mr. patient for nearly 2 years now. LOL I got me some tomato plants the other day and I found me some big tubs A landscaper didn’t need anymore so when we leave Tennessee and head northward I’m gonna have myself some tomato plants. I got me some organic lettuce seeds and I’m gonna grow those. I should be able to grow those before it gets too hot up there. So we’ve got a lot going on. I’m staying busy with all the heritage Ways stuff. It’s a full-time job and then I’ve got all the homekeeping stuff and homeschooling. I feel like a juggler with three full-time jobs but I love staying busy. I love you and wish we could share some corn cakes. Well, not technically share them because I want my own piece. 😂😘

I love that fish spatula you used to turn the cornbread. My mother used to have some that were made by Ecko. They said Batter Whip on them. It got to where you couldn’t find them any more. Mother would always look for them at estate & garage sales. I was in William-Sonoma one day & there they were in stainless steel & called a fish spatula. I bought my mom, my sister & myself one. I use mine all the time. I don’t know how anybody makes gravy without one. So handy. Blessings on you, Mr. Brown & your homestead. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Anytime I hear 'crowder peas', I get a mental pic of my Big Mama with a big bowl of black crowders balanced in her lap with her thumb running the peas out of that shell, while watching her 'stories'. She's been gone since the early 80's and I can still see that and hear the soap opera in the background, as clear as day. Days of Our Lives.

My mother in law made these and I love them. She always had to have superfine cornmeal to make them and it wasn't SR so she had to put the salt and a little soda in them, She always patter hers out and I never could get the hang of that. She's gone now, but I'm going to have to try this way of doing them as soon as I can get me some fresh turnip greens. They're so much better than the canned or frozen. Love your shows!

This is a meal to remember. I am so glad to finally learn how to make the hot water cornbread. My mother used to make it and my Daddy loved it. And the onion powder definitely would give it a bounce up.

I’ve never made cornbread with water before. I use milk, one egg, little sugar and little flour. I need to try these. I very good friend of mine in Florida taught me to cook my cabbage with potatoes and smoked sausage like Hillshire. So delicious. That’s the only way I cook it now. Another friend taught me to fry my cabbage in real butter. Yummy. Can’t wait to try this cornbread. Thank you for the video Lori.

Great recipe. We don't eat corn bread here in the UK, but I recall a piece was served as standard with many restaurant meals I had on holiday in the US once (Florida).
Gosh I miss Miss Lori's long hair, it was so beautiful! I hope she's growing it back now. Her choice of course and she's gorgeous whatever, but I think it really suited her pretty face. It looked lovely pinned up in a pleat too, on those hot days!
God bless this special, big-hearted couple. Sending Lori and Danny much love and respect from across the Pond in England. XXX
