Thank you so much for this list Lindsay! I have some of them, and I agree with your assessments on them. Will totally be ordering some of these that I don't have.
Also, can we talk about the DEDICATION! All these craft books in such a short time.. truly a servant to the people lol! Endued with the powers of big brain too, no doubt, after all that!

Thanks for doing all of this! There are a few of these that I was kind of interesting in reading, but wasn't sure it was worth it, and so this helped me with my consideration.

I've been waiting for this video ever since you first mentioned working on it! I just finished On Writing and loved it. I agree with you that it's not much of a craft book, it was just interesting to find out more about Stephen King's journey.

I've written 30ish books and have never read Save the Cat Writes a Novel. So I bought it today lol I don't want to be the only authortuber who hasn't read it ;) I DNF'd Creating Character Arcs but I want to pick it back up. I'm currently reading Wired for Story by Lisa Cron #alwayslearning

This was a really interesting and useful video :-) And I'm so glad you said Truby is condescending, that's exactly how I feel about the book!! I've tried to read it three times and haven't made it more than about 20% because he's so mean to "most mediocre writers"! One day I'll get through it :P

The book that really helped me understand genre conventions, though it is also really good for editing your book from a story standpoint, was The Story Grid by Shawn Coyne. If I could teach a creative writing class, that book would be the required textbook for the class.

Apart from Save the Cat, I haven’t actually read any craft books, because I don’t learn well by reading, but by doing badly and then doing again, so this is helpful if I ever want to go there. (Although I won’t read On writing because I don’t like his advice.)

I've suspected for a while now that "On Writing" is not really a craft book. Since I'm not a reader of Stephen King, I will pass on that one.

  • @rainsmom

Have you read Robert McKee's books? STORY is a classic. He, too, is a screenwriter, and he, too, is a total douche. But STORY is one of the best craft books I've ever read. Oh! And check out Alexandra Sokoloff's Screenwriting Tricks for Authors series. The first book in that series is my personal bible. I write every novel in eight sequences, now. It works so well!

oh you don't have fun reading reference books? guess you aren't a REAL writer.
also wow reading all those craft books back to back? your poor brain, I don't even want to imagine how badly you want to revise everything you've ever written now xD
I've only read Save the Cat (I knooooow I need to read more oops) and wow I basically wanted to revise everything I've ever thought about writing
