- Discussing the rulers of the houses in astrology, and what it means for the ruler of one house to be in another house in a birth chart, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Sam Ogden.
The rulers of the houses is an ancient and important element of birth chart delineation, but it is often overlooked in modern times.
It is more of an intermediate level technique, because it involves combining different basic concepts surrounding the fourfold system of planets, signs, aspects, and houses.
Understanding the rulers of the houses is crucial for chart synthesis, because it is through this technique that you start to see how the basic concepts work together, as well as how different parts of the chart are connected.
In the first part of this episode we discuss how to interpret what it means when the ruler of one house is in another, such as for example when the ruler of the 4th house is in the 9th house, and then later we talk about how to time the activation of the rulers of the houses using the annual profections time-lord technique.

I learned a couple years ago that Jupiter is the sole dispositor of my chart and is located in my second house which happens to be sagittarius and a part of my chart stellium...
Im still trying to connect the dots for its significance to streamline examples to submit but... between the other stellium players (my ♋️ ☉ ruler ☽ as well as ☋♅♆) its been a wild ride navigating

This makes me realize how powerful stelliums are. If a bunch of your house rulers are all in one house, it's going to steer your destiny very profoundly.

Totally! It concentrates several rulers of the houses in the same sector, which also results in a bunch of those house topics all becoming activated at once when the annual profection comes to that sign.
I have 5 planets in my Libra 8th house. Always had big things happen, good and bad, when I hit an 8th house profection year. The mixed bag comes from having Saturn & Pluto in there but also the 2 benefics.
I have 4 in Virgo in my 5H
5 planets in Gemini 12th house. I feel like I’m a walking contradiction.
Something interesting: in vedic texts, they usually don't interpret, for example, the ruler of the 7th in the 10th as ''the native will meet his partner within the career''. They interpret the 7th lord as having ''10th house results''. They are not literal in the interpretation, they are conceptual. Something like: the native will have successful (success - 10th) relationships (relationships - 7th) and produce children (status - 10th and marriage 7th house), and they will receive a lot (power - 10th) of pleasure (pleasures and desires - 7th), etc. So, instead of linking topics, it's more like the ruler that signifies something gives results according to the events described by its house position. If the 10th means success, power, etc, it will mean that in relationships and pleasure. Another example: the ruler of the 2nd (wealth, family support, education support) in the 4th (home, property, emotional satisfaction, close bonds) would mean pleasures, close bonds, wealth and conveyances, good education and nurturing, while in the 6th it would mean debts, family disagreements, inability to learn and to sustain oneself as a result. It would not be interpreted as ''your finances come from real estate or family'' or ''you make money through enemies and servants''. It's a bit more results-oriented, while in the west instead of a result, they tend to predict a storyline. Eastern delineations are a bit more archetypal, broad and easy to relate, while the western ones tend to list all the possible scenarios to finally find a storyline that matches after a lot of tries, which is VERY hard to do. I feel that vedic delineations aim to hit the board, which is relatively easy, while the western ones tend to aim to hit the bullseye which may turn out to be a great success or an awful miss.
This is fascinating, i think i understand what you're trying to say but am slightly unsure. I'm typically a very western boy but i find this at least very educational.
This is interesting and I'm glad that you gave an example that fits my chart. I have the ruler of the 2nd in the 6th. I don't think your delineation fits, though. For sure I have debt and I've had disagreements with my family, but I don't make money from enemies, my debt is minimal, I have doctorate and learning new things is my speciality. I tend to think this placement is reflected in the way that my biggest expenditure and preoccupation is health and healing. I spend a lot of time and energy on health because I'm sensitive and I need to. I see this as the ruler of my 2nd in the 6th with a 6H Sag stellium and the south node in the 2nd: my money goes out due to health and healing, which is a daily peroccupation for me, and a spiritual thing. I wouldn't characterize the 6th in my chart in the negative way that many traditional interpretations of the 6th do. But I also have both benifics in the 6th with my sun (+neptune and mercury) and I feel pretty optimistic about my focus. I think I've got my priorities straight. Health is wealth--so what else is there? I would answer that and say spirituality, but for me these are linked. I think my chart and experience confirms the western approach, what do you think?

@@astrologiaconfer Usually, most vedic books about astrology have entire chapters about what every planet in every sign or house means, as well as what a certain ruler being in another house means. Specifically, what I was quoting was a brihat parashara horashastra chapter on the results of the rulers of houses in different houses. For planets in signs and houses, I recommend Phaladeepika and Saravali. You can find translations of these books for free in the internet. However, some of them are kinda sketchy. There's a CZcamsr named Vic Dicara who has a whole series on the book Phaladeepika, where he translates word by word and explains the meaning of every verse in the book (his Sanskrit skills are outstanding). He has full videos on what every planet on every house means translated directly from Phaladeepika on a livestream playlist about that same book. He also has a series similar to that with his own interpretations but I prefer the one where he translates word by word the book. Phaladeepika also has great descriptions and ''yogas'' about how to judge the results of houses which are very simple to understand, Vic Dicara also has videos translating and explaining these verses word by word. One interesting thing, is that I find less variation from what a placement means from Vedic book to Vedic book (for example, sun in the 2nd house, etc). Saravali and Phaladeepika have extremely similar descriptions of that. I tend to see more variation of interpretations with western astrologers. For example, Valens interprets Mars in the 5th in a good way (Mars would give good fortune in a martial way, Mars having 5th house results), while Venus in the 6th in a bad way (Venus gives bad fortune in a Venusian way, give 6th house results). However, later authors tend to interpret Mars in a bad way in every house (Mars ''affects the house'' they don't blend) and Venus in a good way in every house too (Venus has meaning reconciliation with enemies in the 6th). Planets in house descriptions from vedic books are also closer to Hellenistic ones in which planets can be good or bad depending on the house, not that planets ''affect'' the houses, which favors a ''blended'' interpretation of planet+house and not a ''planet impacts the house'' type of interpretation.

Ruler of my 7th, Saturn, is in my 3rd. I met a guy at an event, with whom I went on to have a relationship. When I asked him where he lived, it turned out he was my next-door but one neighbour. He was also an English teacher.
:) Ruler of my 7th house/Cancer , Moon, is also in my 3rd house Pisces. My most important relationships had something important to do with language, one of them related to radio broadcasting at the time and the others artist and writers. The most relevant of this relationship, one of the artists, started practicing a foreign language for both, he also runned a clandestine radio in his neighbourhood in his youth and collected radios. I also have a bunch of 1/1 relationships with Pisces people.
I also have Saturn and Mars in the 7th, but those examples are not so jolly...

This is a powerhouse channel! Love the level of footnote research and the framing of perspectives...But I will try one based on your research. I have 4 degrees Gemini rising. My third house is ruled by Leo. Leo's planet, the Sun, is in my 11th house. So therefore there is a connection between my house of siblings and friends. Early on in life, I met my first friend on my neighbourhood block, because my sister told me to say hi. Had she not been there, I would have never greeted him, and he would have remained a stranger there on out

My 4th ruler in in the 9th. Because it is Venus and is dignified and aspected by Jupiter - I always knew I wanted to live abroad, I've been living abroad for years, I have always been very unlucky in my country of origin, and when I moved abroad good things started happening...I feel way more conected to love, art and relationships in general abroad (themes of my Venus in Libra). I had also lived for a while in meditation and Yoga retreats (another layer of my 4th ruler in the 9th lol).... and my family (4th house) had moved abroad as well :D this could be so literal, great!
I am a Taurus rising so my 7th house (marriage/partnerships) is in Scorpio, ruled by Mars. My Mars is in my 6th house (daily life/work). I met my husband in high school and since then, we've created a production company and work together very often on films, commercials, promos and more. My husband is a Sag rising so his 7th house is in Gemini, ruled by Mercury. His Mercury is in the 2nd house (income/possessions), which also connects with the fact that he makes most of his income with me, his wife. His Mercury is also pretty well placed, despite being in the 2nd house, with a trine to Jupiter and Mars in the 10th (career/reputation).
This episode has made me reflect on my own chart. I have Saturn ruling my 4th house and it’s located in the 11th house, and both of my grandfathers were community leaders that have parks (in the towns they resided) dedicated to them, AND they had the same birthday. I had never thought of it before today, so thank you!!
I have used Placidus Houses for my whole life but am now looking at my chart very differently through whole signs. It puts my Aquarian stellium in the 4th so it's a signifucant adjustment in thinking! But it makes sense.
Actually in the Ted Kennedy chart there is a mutual reception (3rd ruler in the 8th and 8th ruler in the 3rd), creating a strong link between these houses. Very difficult chart for siblings indeed...and Mercury (a natural significator of the 3rd house) in tightly conjuct mars and combust the sun (8th ruler).
I've got a good answer for your pinned comment! I'm a union organizer in the healthcare industry. My Scorpio 2H (income) is ruled by Mars in my Pisces 6H (service to others, healthcare). On top of that, my Cancer 10H (career, reputation) is ruled by the Moon in my Leo 11H (community, social movements)
Also, my Sun and Mars are conjunct in Pisces 6H and are almost exactly trine my MC! I feel like I'm doing the work I'm suppose to be doing

This is a small example in response to the pinned comment: as a Taurus Sun with a day chart, any time Mars moves through my first house or gets too close to my ruler, it breaks me out in rashes or acne, especially when Mars gets too close to Venus in my 4th or 6th House. I typically have very good skin and robust health, but Mars likes to plague me with highly reactive skin 🙃
Love the idea of a house-focused series! In case you're open to other ideas, please consider doing episodes on financial astrology, unaspected planets, out-of-bounds planets, and double- and triple signs (e.g., double/triple Cancer). You've done an episode on stelliums, but this would be a sign-focused parallel to that. Thank you for all your work 💚
I've also requested out-of-bounds planets, Chris replied once saying that he doesn't see much effect from them. This was at least a year ago though.

I think my chart ruler is my favorite. I'm a libra rising with venus placed in the 9th house gemini. I love all things having to do with spirituality, philosophy, culture, language, traveling, learning, and how the arts (venus) intersects with these things. I'm an astrologer and a very spiritual person. I was heavily involved in my college's philosophy club and conference in college, and I think about the world in very philosophical ways. I loved college and am considering jumping back into learning through taking astrology courses, and I'm currently re-learning my second language. I love learning about other cultures and people, especially through travel. My current partner is from the other side of the world, and we're always talking about language, culture, history, and society. I have so many hobbies and interests (gemini), and I'm endlessly curious about people, communication, and the things humans do in micro scales like relationships and macro scales like societies. I'm also a musician and a very creative person, and I love connecting with people (libra, venus) through shared interests and hobbies. This is a good example of how it can be literal, and also kinda metaphorical and less tangible.
I have ruler of 7th in the 10th, ruler of the sixth in the 7th and ruler of the 4th in 10th.. exactly all you said and all those apply. I work with my husband, from home.. we co-own a business together. Just love astrology!

My sister is a Libra rising with a 9H Gemini stellium (Saturn, sun, Jupiter, mercury). When she entered an Aquarius 5h profection she relocated from the UK to live in the US for school (Saturn in the 9H ruling 4th and 5th). I have an Aquarius rising with mercury in Pisces in the 2H ruling 5th and 8th and I used to work as an accountant for a media organisation, I started my job in banking during a 2H profection. I have the ruler of my WS 10H in the 12H, Mars in Capricorn (in a night chart) and I also used to work as a chief of staff in aforementioned bank (working behind the scenes to get things done).

Last year was my 6th house profection year, ruled by Mercury in the 7th and my Gemini 3rd house. My sister (3H) got married (7H) and I was her maid of honor, and I spent much of that year helping (6H) prepare for the wedding! :)

I have my 10th ruler in the 3rd house and began publicly speaking around the age of 8. I was on the cover of my local newspaper and gave many speeches at church and other local events before the age of 10. Funny enough school was awful for me and I always had lots of trouble (10H ruled by Gemini Saturn in 3rd). My 9H ruler is in my 4th house and I began studying genealogy about 8 years ago. My maternal 3rd Great Grandmother/father were immigrants from Poland

I am a cancer rising with Mars, ruler of my Aries 10th house in my Aquarius 8th house. I am a tax auditor. Jupiter rules my 6th snd 9th house and is placed in my 7th house. I work in a different country than the one I was born and grew up in. Astrology is so literal sometimes.

Ruler of 1st house (Capricorn) is in 6th house (Gemini). I’m a workaholic writer. Ruler of 5th house of creativity/theater (Taurus) is also in my 6th. My writing career also includes being a playwright. The ruler of my 10th house (Libra) is in my 6th house. The two rulers of my 2nd house (Aquarius) are in my 6th and my 10th houses. Obviously, my chart ruler is in my 6th.
Hi Chris and Sam. Thank you so much for this amazing episode! I learned so much! Here’s my example. I’m new to this, so I hope I’m interpreting it all correctly…When I was in a 12th house profected year I went in for a regular scheduled OB appointment while pregnant with my daughter, and was told I needed to go immediately on bedrest for the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy. The ruler of my 12th is Venus which is in my 3rd house. I’m not really sure if there’s any significance with the third house. But to note that Venus also rules my 5th house of children. Leo is my 3rd house with the ruler in my 5th. Also my natal Venus is very poorly aspected.
Then few weeks after I had my daughter (still in that same 12th house profected year) I lost my mom unexpectedly. She was only 59 and very healthy. But she woke up one day not feeling well, was hospitalized the same morning, and died 3 days later. My natal moon is in the 12th house.
Could you do an episode completely on condition of the planets? Or mitigation of malefics? I am trying understand the conditions of my own mars and Saturn and there are so many conflicting answers to the question of their conditions and it’s very confusing.

I may do a separate episode on the ruler of the Ascendant at some point. For now, that is something I teach with a lot of examples in my Hellenistic astrology course.
Another good example for the 12th ruler in the 10th would be Meryl Streep chart - also a Leo rising, Cancer Sun and Taurus Moon, just like Frida Kahlo. However Frida's heavy 6th house made the 12th house topics unfold in a much difficult way

Hi Chris and Sam. Great subject. Thank you. I am interested in what the correct diagnosis was for the anonymous famous author who has Aries rising, ruler of sixth (Virgo) in 10th. I am same with ruler of sixth in 10th, Mercury at 27 degrees Capricorn sextile venus in Pisces 26 degrees 12th house. Have stubborn, mysterious, painful illness for three years now. No one has been able to correctly diagnose. Just wondering what her illness was ultimately labeled. Would like to read her book as well.

I inherited keratoconus from my mother, for which I had two cornea transplants. The ruler of my 12th and 9th houses is Mercury, which is in my 8th house. Both corneas came from (dead) donors from outside the country, through a special partnership that my eye clinic had, as local cornea donors were much harder to come by.
I'm a Leo rising and I've got Mars (ruler of the 4th and 9th houses) conjunct my ascendant and oposing my aquarius (7H) sun in a day chart. I grew up (4H) moving multiple times to remote places (9H) because of my father's decisions (4H) and I feel this has both shaped my identity (1H) as well as been the source of a major sense of alienation (7H chart ruler in detriment and opposed by the malefic contrary to sect).
I am also a cancer rising with Venus in Aquarius like our friend Lord Byron… and although I didn’t inherit a dilapidated castle, my ex husband did buy me a house as part of the terms of our separation. 🎉 astrology
Leo Asc, Saturn in 5WSH conj NN. My intimate of decades happens to be a Sag rising, and is from a very different heritage to mine. His Saturn is in 9WSH Libra, trine my Sun, smoothing or softening the otherwise hardness of that planet. On his end, with Gemini 7WSH then, Mercury becomes his relationship significator. This was such a great episode. Thank you! I do scratch my head tho...having 3 planets in the 8th (incl. chart ruler) and 3 planets in the 6th. Despite the "bad houses" rap they get, I *think* these placements really work out well for me! Would love to hear from other people who have heavy 8th houses. Seems like 8th house is either ignored in teaching examples or confined to the "other people's money" interpretation...but IMO the 8th house can bring so much more to life than that. Any other people w/ lots of stuff in the 8th (and/or 6th), and what is your experience of it?
Hey Chris. From the example of Elsbetth showing Ebertin astrology. You took the 4th house as home? or as the mother? because the mother would be the 10th right? or you take the 10th and 4th intercheangable for any of the parents?

I am not sure if i missed you mentioning this in this video but Have you noticed any differences in clients whom have a cruel planets that rule a "malegic/difficult house" and it goes into a beneficial house have more negative effects or positive effects? Or vice versa, if a beneficial planet ruling a beneficial house goes into a more difficult house have more help or not due to those placements?

turn 32 = 9th house profection year, cancer 9th house with exalted jupiter. House ruler: Moon, 2nd house sagittarius, applying within 3 degrees to Mars Conjunction and MC trine (moon is sect light, mars is chart ruler, malefic in sect so not too mean). Shortly after I turned 32 I quit my job and quit having an income (2), decided to live on credit and student loans for a while (2), started a diploma program (9), got into tarot, reiki, try out a traditional yoga program and deepen astro (9). Jupiter, active in the 9th, also rules 5th of creativity, I entered an art show this year for the first (and last) time :).
turn 28 = 5th house year, pisces ruled by jupiter in 9th. This year I camped at water more often (pisces 5th) and flew to neighbouring country for a concert (9 + 5), started my first diploma course (9), and had a very jupiterian person give me a talking-to this year which changed a few of my trajectories
I have a 10th house aquarius stellium ruled from 5th house virgo. I think the most notable manifestation of these placements is a general feeling of conflict trying to be myself, part of me is always looking for another direction no matter how happy the rest of me is. 🤷

Hey Chris! How do you treat the MC in this system? For example, if the MC is in the 11th house, AND the ruler of the 11th house is conjunct the MC? In this case, MC in taurus, with venus conjunct?
And for that matter, how do you treat it when the rulership of a house is in the same house, such as in a case like this where venus is in taurus in the 11th house?
I think he briefly touched on having the ruler of a house in its domicile as being a little less revealing vs as if it were in another house to see topics tying in. But having its ruler in its own house does speak to its strength, I would then look at how it’s being aspected and consider the sect of the native to add another layer of delineation.
Since the mc is in the 11th house, it blends with 10th house significations. So you could also look at what mars is up to since Aries would be the 10th house in that instance. That could help give some clarification to what’s going on with the 11th and the mc ❤

Mars is at 1 degree of cancer, which in the whole sign system falls into the first house. Perfect for a redhead, I suppose!
Professionally though, I'm studying a masters in law, but I also have a career in the arts as a painter.
For me, the only thing about this topic that can be hard is sometimes the “arrows” can be shifted back and forth when discussed. It’s more an “over thinking” issue, what’s great about astrology is it gets a little second nature as you go and more techniques can be added. I’ll be nice and not say the technique but there’s one in Chris’ book that I wanted to use but thought it was too complicated at the time. It actually resolved some issues I had with basically using whole sign houses exclusively.
Simple.. lot of fortune in the 7th (Pisces) in Jupiter terms with exalted ruler. Lot of fortune is also connected to Leo which has ruler of asc and MC. Lvl 2 spirit release coincided with finding the company I worked for was shipping all operations overseas, but my 12th house placements are also linked to 9th and 10th along with a placement in the lvl 1 spirit release (banner) and it’s ruler is linked to MC (6th moon but a technique, it’s conj MC). Major career shifts are brewing and a lot of “9th” activity. It’s also a 10th house profection. Spirit is also conj MC in that technique.
It’s still amusing that I read both Chris and Demetra’s books having two techniques I knew I wanted to use but wasn’t sure how, then stumbled on them by accident reading lectures from the early 1900’s. What I didn’t anticipate was that I’d be going specifically into Christianity and astrological meaning. To me, it’s compatible with Catholicism. And, yes, I’ll eventually learn the specifics on how the signs/houses match up to the dodecahedron along with the mathematics. Eventually..

Newbie Question: I'm trying to apply the lessons from this podcast to my own chart. I'm thinking in particular of how the 10th house ruler might relate to placements in my 5th house. I have six planets in Virgo in the 10th house. The native ruler of the 10th is saturn and my natal saturn is in the 5th house of Aries, along with the north node and chiron.
Since my 10th house is so packed, would that mean that my 5th house placements and issues (creativity, art, love - needing hard work, to be taken seriously, discipline, structure, time, late bloomer) are highly correlated with my 10th house issues of career/life mission? I'm a scorpio rising and Mars is in the 9th.
All this changes, of course, in a whole sign chart (packed 11th house ... rather than 10th .... mars in 10th rather than 9th). But basically I'm wondering if maybe the 5th house is more important than I have previously thought?
Mercury which rules Virgo is your 10th house ruler. Where is Mercury? You have to look there. Saturn isn’t the ruler if its Virgo. There is a teaching tool that likens Saturn/Capricorn/10th house as all having similar meanings but you should look at the sign’s actual ruler. Hope that helps!
