  • Tuzkol is translated as “salt lake”.
Lake Tuzkol is located in an intermontane depression between the Yelchin-Buyryuk and Karatau mountains, spurs of the Ketmen ridge of the Northern Tien Shan mountain system. The lake is large - 5 km long, and the width in some places reaches 1 km. The area of the lake is 3.2 sq. km, and the depth reaches 3 m.
The water is very salty, but the degree of salinity varies with the seasons. At the maximum value, the salt content in the water reaches 300 g per liter! For comparison: in the Dead Sea, the concentration is approximately 340-350 g.
There is bare steppe around the lake. Sedge and hodgepodge grow on the shore. There are no large shrubs and trees. But in general, the entire valley is surrounded by high mountains. In the west - the small Yelchin-Buyryuk ridge with a height of 2,979 m, in the east - the Karatau mountains. The height of many of its peaks exceeds 3,500 m, and the highest point has a value of 3,728 m. The southern slopes of the ridge are devoid of vegetation up to the border with China, from which it is only 30 km to Tuzkol. But the northern slopes of Karatau are covered with dense spruce forests.
