    I know that Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are one series really but I am going off the English translated official releases so I have separated them and will do a follow-up video for Dragon Ball Z at some point ☺

    Dragon Ball started as a gag manga, Toriyama was a comedy writer. Thats why you have random moments like Goku going to the moon, but as the series moves forward it gets more serious and action heavy.

    One of my favorite toriyama questions is someone asked his writing process for the week and he basically procrastinated until the day before. I’m sure he had an overall plan but for him to make the small things come together so quick and make it to where he wanted is impressive

    The penguin village part is a cameo of Toriyama previous series Dr. Slump and Arale is one of the most powerful characters in DragonBall lore

    Goku and Luffy really remind me of each other like their innocence towards life and the way they just see the good in people, and they will give you the shirt off their backs I started reading this manga and watching the anime because of my older siblings so I grew up with it and I’m really sad that the author isn’t here anymore.

    Amazing video as always, just a few things i'd like to add, i think is implied that Goku accidentaly killed his grandpa during a full moon. The second thing, penguin village is the place where Toriyama's previous work took place, Dr. Slump is a gag manga, where the toon force exist thats why Arale (the little cyborg girl) is super strong and can make absurd things

    I hope enjoyed. There is something about when an author passes away. Their work becomes almost sacred, something you can hold. I look back on all the manga I have and luckily all the authors are still around. I wish all mangaka long lives, because what their drawings bring to the world is unique. I like to believe that in every eventuality Akira Toriyama writes Dragon Ball.

    Toriyama was already successful when Dragon Ball started, thanks to the gag manga, Dr. Slump. And he definitely didn’t expect it to go on for as long as it did. The story slowly turns into martial arts because his editors suggestions, because that’s what was becoming popular in the 80s. It just turned out that Toriyama is a phenomenal action artist. You may know all of this already after doing some research. But I think it’s interesting. Also, another thing that’s cool is dragon ball is why we have what’s called the Big 3, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. Because they started after dragon ball ended in 95, and Shonen needed a big series to replace Dragon ball.

    If you haven't heard about Toriyama's previous big series Dr. Slump, it kinda explains the humor in Dragon Ball especially the earlier volumes, cause it is a gag manga.

    Kuririn is Kuri, which means chestnut in Japanese (because his bald head) and Shaolin, because he’s a monk. And Krillin I think is just because Kuririn is so hard for English speakers to say. You say it right tho. Almost all the names in dragon ball are puns.

    Thank you for this fun review. I agree early Dragonball starts a bit weak with regards to pervy jokes and findings its footing, but with the first tournament it gets more and more fun. I really hope you will give Dragon Ball Z a read soon as well. In my opinion it keeps its strengths (great characters, adventure, fun, easy to understand fights) but also adds some more emotions and development (especially the cast next to Goku).

  • @windhelmguard5295
    @windhelmguard5295 Před 2 měsíci

    about the kuririn thing:
    it is spelled in japanese as ku-ri-ri-n
    what is important here is that japanese is written in syllables, so you can only write vowels and combinations of one consonant and a vowel, the only consonant that can exist on its own in japanese is the letter N for reasons i do not know.
    now to how kuririn's name works: the u is silent so if you write it by latin standards it would be kririn, but telling an english speaker to pronounce that isn't going to go well, thus whoever transcribed the name for the dub made use of the fact that japanese pronounces R's kind of halfway between R and L and changed the second r into an L to make things easier for the voice actors.
    now why they decided to change the second i into an e is beyond me, there is no justification for that.

  • @benediktmathes2528
    @benediktmathes2528 Před 2 měsíci +1

    "Mechanical man"? 😂 Also just better known as "Android 8".
    "Kuririn" is the romanization if his name, but the u is often silent in Japanese and the whole R/L thing... "Krilin" is the correct pronunciation.
    Some names are kinda strange in the English translation tbh. Took me a long time to get used to Tenshinhan being called "Tien" or "Tien Shinhan" (where did that "i" come from... and why did they split that name into 2 words? 😂)
    It's a "beh" at the end of "Yajirobe", though most just say "be" I think. The rest was correct. "Ya-ji-ro-be"
    Fun fact: Muten Roshi is the inspiration for Luffy in Dressrosa. Obviously the beard and the sun glasses, but also the name. Lucy is the Westernization of the name. Luffy's romanized name is "Rufi", so in the original Japanese he went with "Rushi" in his disguise as homage to Roshi.

  • @captaincrespo3327
    @captaincrespo3327 Před 2 měsíci

    Muten Roshi is the old man master of the turtle school. Muten roshi means invincible old master. And in the English anime they call him master roshi. Which means master old master if you take it literally lol. Sorry for a barrage of comments! But I’ve been a fan of dragon ball for like 23 years, since I was like 7, and I know a lot about it. Hope what I’m saying is interesting lol

    I don’t know if you know this, but Oda actually did work as an assistant on Dragonball so it’s likely he was very inspired by Dragonball. Like how Oda switches from Water 7 to Thriller Bark, it’s a lot like how Toriyama switches from androids to monsters. I actually have a not serious theory that One Piece becomes Dragonball in the future.
    Years ago, before I got back into One Piece, I wanted a story that I loved that I could study to emulate. When I was in college I had a class where we pretty much studied the Matrix the entire class and I loved the idea of studying a story. Dragonball was on my list of stuff I loved that I wanted to study, but once I rediscovered One Piece it was over and I didn’t need to move down my list lol.
    Dragonball is great. Toriyama’s actions scenes, stylizations, lines and creativity are special qualities. Dragonball is a classic even despite its flaws.
    In terms of tournaments, it’s a big thing in manga, especially early manga. Saint Seiya was a big one back in the day and I think the first to do it, but tournaments in manga became very popular. A lot of people site Dragonball as the first to do it, but it’s not true. I do think Dragonball popularized it for a new generation. You’ll see it as a pretty common trope and I actually think Yuyu Hakusho has the best one. But it is a big thing in the Dragonball franchise and I do think every time Toriyama does it, he tends to try to do it differently and tries to be creative with it.

      Oda never worked on Dragon Ball, but Toriyama was his (and Kishimoto's) biggest inspiration. Oda did do the majority of his assistant work on Rurouni Kenshin, and there's definitely story inspiration from that manga too (I always felt like Megumi's introduction arc is a proto-Enies Lobby).

    @lostfound2834 Před 2 měsíci

    You know, while I'd like you to continue onto Dragon Ball Z, I DO want to see your opinion on the abridged series as well. It's like a fandub parody that ended up becoming its own beast and, for all intends and purposes, actually elevates the source material. I legit recommend watching the abridged version for how insanely good it is, as well as being one of the very FEW series where the dub is of equal quality as the original voice actors.
