I doubt harden would’ve went back. Houston was more like a last resort if he can’t get any better deals. He knows if he went there he will fasho retire ringless. Don't forget Steven Adams is one of the smartest bigs, his on-court in-play decision making is exceptional, and he's an absolute amazing on and off court communicator with other players.
Adams is a tank and a defensive juggernaut and a vet that can keep the youngsters in check. This was a great trade

He's going to be the backup to Sengun, so his usage will go way down. That should help with the health problems.
They aren’t getting him to start. He’ll play around 20 mpg at most. Health is not a huge concern.

Adams is out for the remainder of the 23/24 season. He had, successful, season ending knee surgery and is starting his rehab process. He'll be back to 'full contact' in time for pre-season next year.

Both teams have signaled they assume they're done this year and out of contention so the trade deadline is all about 'okay what comes next?' Honestly, this trade is a close to a 'win/win' as it gets. Houston gets a guy for next season who is 30 years old and has an awesome reputation both on and off the court who can pair up with or backup Sengun. Memphis gets an expiring contract to free up cap space for their push to get a lottery pick player and a solid veteran to put around their core with Morant back next year to make a push.
