    *The Morgan Storyline: An Autopsy*
    Now that the Morgan storyline is over, we can assess it fully and I still maintain that it’s the worst storyline in the show’s history up to this point. A major problem was the lack of strong actors being asked to carry the story - the show realized this and tried to include Stephanie but it was still detrimental to the flow and feeling to have the three leads (Ridge, Taylor and Morgan) be played by weak actors. For a storyline like this where the villain drives so much of the action and has to do important “duet” scenes with limited actors like Ronn Moss and Hunter Tylo, it was crucial for the show to cast a compelling and charismatic actress on the level of Kimberlin Brown and Sarah Buxton was just not up to that task.
    But the other main problem was the story itself. It just never made any sense and was not fun to watch. Maddeningly, so much of Morgan’s perspective and motivation occurred offscreen or in backstory so the viewer never got to identify with her through her origin story or follow vicariously with her as she carried out her plans. Morgan was also never really shown to be particularly clever or manipulative - the show just made everyone else act foolishly (Ridge thinking his wife gave permission to sleep with another woman over email, Clarke not telling anyone that Morgan tried to kill him, Tim just going along with Morgan’s heinous crimes). And what exactly was Morgan’s plan? She didn’t want anyone to know she was pregnant with Ridge’s baby or that she had Steffy yet both times she stayed in LA in close proximity to the Forresters. She wanted to raise Steffy as her own daughter yet she also wanted a life with Steffy’s father. These weren't plans, these were directionless acts meant to just keep the story going, like the way a child tells a story: "And then this happened, and then that happened..."
    It would be easy to conclude that this was another storyline where Brad Bell prioritized plot over character but the plot itself didn’t make sense. No this was something worse, this was _flash over substance._ The entire plot was just fitted around these action set pieces that Brad thought would make the show more exciting: Morgan falling from the balcony, Clarke getting attacked by the python, Steffy disappearing from the boat, Ridge crashing his car into the house, Morgan and Stephanie fighting at the house. But the problem with these flashy episodes is that there’s no weight to them. When the writing is bad and nothing makes sense, you don’t feel the danger or suspense or emotional impact in any of those moments. And this tendency for flash over substance marks a shift in the tone of the show as Brad takes it into the 21st century and eventually dismantles his father’s entire story structure. Indeed while this was the worst storyline in the show’s history up to this point, it won’t hold that distinction for long.

    • @NewYorkNick0607
      @NewYorkNick0607 Před měsícem +15

      *PS:* Another problem with the writing was its over-reliance on the stronger writing from another show (Y&R). The show often made references to Sheila's storyline and then brought in Tim to recreate the dynamic he had with Phyllis without doing any of the character or story building work that Y&R did. As a result, the comparisons to Sheila only made Morgan look lamer as a villain and the portrayal of Tim Reid was a shallow caricature of his character.

    • @sharonstewart4882
      @sharonstewart4882 Před měsícem +11

      Great summary of the problems with this storyline! 👏👏 Brad thought he was creating the next Sheila but Morgan was a flop. I so agree with you about the action packed story beats. Brad goes in for more of that later and it's reason why the show deteriorated.

    • @mdw71
      @mdw71 Před měsícem +5

      It was a total train wreck. And forgive the digression, but I hated Brooke and Thorne. When Stephanie slugged her at the cabin and beat the couch with that fire poker that was pretty much my reaction. Like, really? Really??? How dumb is this? Thorne, and now present-day Thomas, are surrounded by beautiful people and all they can go for are Dad and Bros ex and his sort-of former step-sister-ish??? I never thought about it because I wasn't watching Y&R at the time but I guess they thought another red-headed stalker was what they needed, hence Phyllis II in Morgan the psycho.

      It was because Hunter Tylo came back that Sarah Buxton was dropped. You're correct, Sarah had signed a one year contract and was supposed to be around for a while, but Brad Bell happened to run into Hunter and they got to talking. At that moment they decided that it would be great for Taylor to make a return and Hunter was happy to come back. Next thing, Sarah was let go and the story was never explored as Brad decided to go with Taylor's return instead. It wasn't originally planned that way and simply happened by chance.
