- On November 23, 1954, the 50 millionth GM car, the specially built Golden Chevy Bel Air, rolled off the assembly line and onto a parade float. It disappeared shortly thereafter. Now, years later a group of guys decided to re-create this car. Snodgrass Chevy Restoration brought it back to life, as closely as possible to the original. Here is a walk around of the GM 50 Millionth Golden Car re-creation.

i've always been a chevy guy and have heard about this car but i figured it was a myth. i just can't believe GM had made 50 million cars ever, that seems like an unreal number even now. it's a beauty.
They only made 21 million VW Bugs to put that into perspective and they built those in Mexico until 2006!

I just did some quick math in my head and if each of the five divisions sold 400,000 cars per year, it would only take 25 years to get to 50 million. So it is doable. For example, the 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme sold 750,000 cars in one year alone, and that’s just one model.
I owned a 55 Bel. What a stunning car you must feel proud. A one off !!!! Love it.❤❤❤❤

When I first saw this solid gold 55 I thought OMG that thing is gaudy as he// then about half way threw the video I thought ya know this thing isn’t that bad, and the more I saw it by the end of the vid I gotta tell ya that car really is stunning hard to believe I like it now, but that damn car is truly beautiful

The original was in a shop fire and then cut to pieces. There were 3 50 millionth cars but i believe that was the true car.

I understand the actual milestone `55 Chevy was repainted black/white and gold switched for chrome trim and it was re-sold to some GM exec. after the parades were over. Unfortunately, it's been lost to time and nobody knows what became of it. My guess it it was eventually scrapped like any old car.

The bel air came of age in ‘55. It was the top of the line until ‘58 when the Impala sub model debuted. After ‘58, the Impala became its own series. This is a great replica of the original 50 millionth car.

I knew this car existed as its shown in my 55 Chevy restoration literature and books. The original car disappeared. Is this one going in the GM museum as the example of that car? Looks beautiful.

I had a 55 210 I put corvette wheels on it it had the blue flame 3 on tree on the highway at 60 it drove solid straight and smooth the panoramic windshield was like 360 vision one of the finest autos to be built.😢I sold it .

@@eclassicautos5101 I had read an article before I saw this video that said this build began with those. My father was a collector and I can remember projects being started by a small conversation. The money and time that went into this has to be the most expensive build I’ve ever seen started by something so small! Just coincidence that I happened along and saw this.

Contrary to popular belief, the 265ci small block from 1955 is not Chevy's first V8. That honor goes to the Series D, built between 1917 and 1919, although I believe all were sold as a 1918 model year. It had a 3.375 inch bore, 4 inch stroke, 180 degree crankshaft, and was rated at 60 horsepower.

Over the top, '50s style. Is it wrong to picture this car with a straight axle, radiused rear wheel openings, and stacks through the hood with lettering on the side, "The Golden Gasser"? Yeah, probably wrong, but I can't shake it off.

I pulled the heater box out of my 1955 Nomad and it had 3-55 ink stamped on the back. I’m thinking that makes it a mid (or late?) production car.

The team who built the Tribute car did extensive research on the history of this car. Here's the full story.
There were three (3) 2-door sport coupes initially built. The first two were used in promotional work by GM to create a buzz on the pending event before the actual 50 millionth car rolled off the assembly line. The third car in this group was the 50 millionth GM car with all the bright work gold plated. Subsequently GM built a number of 4-door sedans to capitalize off of the notoriety of the 50th millionth gold-plated car. Several of these 4-door are still around occasionally show up at classic car events.

Nice car! I had a 55 Belair hardtop a few years ago. I have always been a Chevy guy but I never heard of this one and all my family, granddad, uncles and my father worked and retired from GM in Flint, Michigan. I know you did a tribute but do you know what happened to gm’s car? Thanks

I guess this car is in its golden years. There’s a lot of things I haven’t heard of but this is top of the list for today. Where has this car been for 68 years and what are your plans for it, besides buying a box of gloves so as not to leave prints. Don’t know condition of it when you guys got it but looks like you did NO.1 job of bringing it back to its original condition.

Yes, over 300 items including the bumpers, hubcaps, trim on outside and inside, and even screws that would normally be chrome.

what is the paint code for the gold paint
GM did not use a standard paint for the Gold Chevy. It was a special mix which was not assigned a code. The Tribute car was painted a gold color to closely match photos taken at the time the original 50 Millionth car.
The gold must be twice the cost of chroming, just wondering. What's the paint code or what would be very close? I'd like to make a model of this one. Just have to figure out how to make the chrome gold on the model.

@@lylejohnston4125I have used BMF but if there's any wrinkles or cracks in it, it won't come off in a nice piece, it just tears. I gave up using any BMF because of that. Even the sheets bought from a store were full of cracks and wrinkles.

I had actually found one of the first '55 Chevys made. It was #12 IIRC with engine #7, which was a 265 2-bbl. I initially was looking at the engine, and suddenly I was shocked at the number. It was a 4-door sedan, sitting in a forest. I tried and tried to get somebody interested, but back then, "It's a 4-door." I can't remember the color. And of course, you spend $50K to restore it, only to hear about somebody with #11. It wasn't in deplorable shape, but it was borderline even back then.
There is actually a very early Nomad, I think with a lower serial number, but #12 that I found was made on the East Coast, so technically in absolute time before the Nomad. Also, I don't know that the Nomad had its original engine.
I had also heard about the 50 Millionth Chevy, essentially the same story, the guy was ever so slowly restoring it. I thought he had the bumpers gold plated even when I was involved with the Chevys, about 30 years ago. I guess nobody knows where that car is now, which is unfortunate.
