In Japan, there was a spill of radioactive material, and many older people volunteered themselves for the clean up. Their reasoning was, “Cancer may take 10-15 years to develop. Most of us would probably have less. We’ll die of our age before the materials will. Don’t make the children of the workers suffer. We’ve lived our lives.”

Depending on if the cesium is enriched or not it would not have mattered if he had moved the container. Radiation seeps into concrete staying there for years. Also, radioactive materials are stored in lead containers called pigs during transport so the individual containers should not have ruptured like that. None of those kids in realty would have gotten hurt due to exposure. In the show those kids would have gotten sick anyway.

Did the math, even at 5mins of continuous exposure at 2ft from the source, and assuming a dose rate of ~8080.95 rem/hr @ 1ft (based on an eatimated source mass of 30g, and a Cs-137 gamma decay activity of 3.215 TBq, and a Stanford data sheet that lists Cs-137 as havig a gamma dose rate of 3.1mrem/h per mCi)...
Youd only get about 1.68sv of dose... not pretty, but the human LD50 is like 4-5 Sv. If they were only exposwd at shuch short diatsnces for 1min the dose drops to 0.34 Sv. Far lesser if they are farther away from the source then two feet like the children (I did my numbers for the guy that 'sacrificed' himself) they woud be fine bc of radiation obeying the inverse square law.

@levicarpenter5509 based on some VERY rough assumptions of the scenario (like there only beige about 30g of Cesium-137, it all being fully exposed, assuming average hight/mass of the man, and only considering gamma radiation)
Even if he stood next to that source for 5 minutes straight at a distance of 2ft, he would have only received a dose of 1.68Sv, which is much less than the human LD50 lethal dose of 4-5 Sv (LD50 meaning the dose that woud kill %50 of people). That drops off a ton if he is only exposed for a shorter time, especially if he is at a greater distance like the kids would be (radiation, like all light, drops off in power by thr square of distance water trhn inversely proportional to distance (it's 1/4th as intense from 2ft as opposed to 1ft)

So as a health physicist, standard protocol is to help those in need regardless of exposure as quickly as possible then to deal with the radiation. Yes more can be exposed; however, the basic safety to decrease exposure is time, distance, and shielding. By waiting for hazmat, the children have been more exposed than if they went and got them away as fast as possible. Emergency in this situation is to save lives then deal with the exposure. Cs-137 is also a byproduct of nuclear reactors and not usually used in cancer treatment. Though treatment measures are always changing. Also by putting on gloves he likely wouldnt be exposed enough to cause radiation burn.

Cs-137 is a β- and γ-emitter. Both kinds are long ranged and γ-radiation goes trough material, so they were all exposed to radiation, although probably not strong enough to cause serious long term problems

The bucket probably was in it on several separate containers but broke out bcs of the impact, if it was just a plastic bucket there would be a lot more contents in that truck spilling out on the road, and hazmat suit are very view restricted and unideal to drive a truck in.
