One of my favorite parts about VRChat is the fact that everything is mostly homegrown/created by the people, for the people. Which means a more intimate community/dev relationship, and often times, a better gameplay experience.

OMG I didn't think Pop Escape would be number 2!! I have a love-hate relationship with this map, so many late nights working on it, it was a struggle, but the pay off was worth it for sure. The amount of photos and feedback I have gotten from folks playing it was too much to include in the map! I could make a whole separate world just for the hall of fame and the walls would all be photos!
I think it wasn't just me that saw the need for this sort of map. There hadn't been a more realistic escape room/puzzle map for the duration that I had worked on Pop Escape. I wanted to prove to myself that I could make a good map above the usual quality that was present during the SDK2 days. Not only that but I wanted to do it without buying any assets and using only models I found online for free. The Devouring came out and set the bar even higher. That's when scope creep set in and I added more rooms and a lobby and a small arcade, and I took all my IRL escape room experience to come up ideas and push it to the next level. When I finally hit the publish button, it was a load off my back and I could see everyone else was dying for that sort of experience.
A lot of the story elements had been cooked up years earlier when writing screenplay ideas, but this map gave me a way to realize them. I mean I had no way of making a film or writing a novel that people would actually read. But a vrchat map? The perfect way to get a few of my ideas out there. I used a lot of theatrical scores to create a cinematic experience. I wanted it to be immersive and film like, with the right amount of puzzles to keep your brain engaged but wowed whenever a door opened, or a switched pulled, or some secret compartment revealed with wonderous music. It was incredibly fun to create that kind of experience. A lot of time and effort, but fun.
It was not soon after that the map was nominated for Best Immersive World at Raindance. I had no 3D modelling or art experience, I wasn't a game programmer or making udon games/prefabs. Just some dude in a basement putting together an experience with SDK2. I'm so glad for SDK2 and how it easy it was to pick up as a non-programmer. It did what i needed it to do. I didn't need to bring any coding specialists or friends to do that part for me. I can't say the same now for udon stuff I work on (i avoid the coding or save it to the end cuz its hard unless you know how to code well or it becomes a mess very quickly with something more than simple switches.) This game provided someone like me, with very limited skills, a platform to create, and an audience to share my creations with. VRChat is very special in that way, the user base is always waiting and grasping for the next big thing, the next cool map to spend time with friends in, to create memories. My playtime in vrchat peaked around the Mr.Whiskers events, when Ready Player One came out, and puzzle maps/escape rooms felt surreal in vrchat, like we were in on some secret, some frontier of gaming and online friendships that no one new about. It was exciting. The thought was there, that my map would slide into the "Labs" abyss never to be seen, and never make it public. My friends and testers assured me it was one of the best maps they had seen, and I'm so glad you all enjoyed it. I'm glad I could create memories and fun times for all of you. And thank you Phia for the recommendation. Your content is entertaining and helps bring VR (which is still a gimmick to many) into the limelight, especially the sub cultures and phenomena that folks might not know about if they aren't heavily involved.
If I could do the map over again there is definitely more skills in 3D modelling I would use to make a cleaner/sharper looking map. As for it being in SDK2, well its on its way out. I know it's possible to convert it to Udon, would need to update the Unity version (its still 2018, yikes) and then use Cyan's tools to convert it over to CyanTrigger, and then migrate it to VCC on top of that. Unfortunately, I don't have the motivation, patience, nor time to do all that. While I understand this is a map that would see continued use if converted to Udon, life and mental health have thrown other commitments my way, and I'd like to say Pop Escape is my goodbye to SDK2, to that bygone era of VRChat that will never return. I hope in some way it can inspire and motivate a new generation of VRChat players to create their own map, and bring their stories and ideas to life in this game for all of use to experience. 😊

For competitive VR FPS, "Gun em Down" by Dinky definitely deserves to be on such a list. It's basically old school Call of Duty, for teams of 8 v 8, but in VRChat. She missed fate of the irribloss
It’s such a fun group game to play with I think 5 or 6 friends where you are in a space ship with each person assigned to one or more spaces // or they can just be the one who goes around the ship fixing thing and making sure everything is all good // and the captain guides the crew through space stopping at shops, empty ships (that you can send people onto to look for things and items), beautiful space/galaxy scenery, bright colors, and the most important.. fighting other npc ships! There are aliens that can board your ship and try their best to kill you while you fight them off and do whatever you need to do at your separate station! And yes everybody has a station on a different side of the ship so they added radios to easily communicate!
It’s a PC only world and works in vr and desktop but vr is highly recommended!
Honestly if you have enough friends I would for sure recommend trying it atleast once!

Project Summer Flare was absolutely amazing, I'd put it way higher up this list but I'm glad it's on here in the first place because it's hella underrated.
I have not seen any VRChat game that gets controls and UI done SO well, hell most _real_ VR games don't even get close!
To climb up a ladder, you actually _climb_ up the ladder. Need to open a door? Don't press a button, pull a chain with your hands. Stuff like that.
The UI, doesn't exist. It's all part of an in game HUD, or even straight up in game objects. Rather than using a backlog menu or something, you look back at your conversation using the (really awesome looking) tablet thingy.
Instead having some kind of inventory or hip thing, you simply don't carry the objects, they teleport to you when you reach your hand towards them (and it makes sense in universe too)
And it just looks, sounds, and feels amazing. This little VRChat world does everything right, and it rivals actual standalone games.
Hey. Stop reading this, go play it already! It's best with 2-5 people or so, I wouldn't recommend going much higher but the world can hold up to 8 I think. Avoid playing desktop, but do it if you have to. It might be useful to have at least 1 person in VR tho.

And the people I would play it with don't have 5-6 hours to kill on one game in a session, either. I guess my best bet would be to just set my headset down to take breaks and hope it doesn't disconnect or something in the meantime. Having a chapter or save system would help IMMENSELY imo.

To all who's going to play, highly recommend playing with friends.
First time going into Obsession solo, I love it but afterward it a bit boring really quick when you start getting stuck with no one to help or talk to.
    The same applies to devouring.
I ended up never liked playing these so called good horror games.
Pretty sure it applies to all puzzle games listed here too.
Remember VRChat doesn't have save feature so when you stopped playing you have to start over again. That could be the reason I hate playing long game here so much.
But when there's someone to talk to it's great regardless of how bad the world is.
The only game I ever finished in this list is Project Summer Flare. And I made a video on it. Played with complete strangers and it still fun. Again play with someone if you can.

I watched some videos on phantom sense in vr and got on the game. (On desktop) i went into a world that visualises music.(you put the music on and then it sinchs so.e bars a rotating light into it) In the world it was basically staring at one point. So this small cat comes close to me, I crouch and te cat reaches its arms up close to my face to touch it. The crazy part it that... I felt it. I don't know how I dont know why. I felt it's fluffy arms reaching up to my face and touching me it was very soft and comforting. I was taken aback, istarted breathing fast and then calmed down. Then, in the same world came an anime girl. (Slightly taller than my avatar) and headsets me (I heard that it's in vr culture so it's normal) I felt that too! It was like a surreal experience. Even after years of playing all kinds of games (done of them being like vrchat, for social interactions) I had never known that was possible. Is there any other explanation that I feel things on desktop other than that I was just immersed in the experience?

Pop Escape is the best, hands down. A true escape room experience.
The Devouring is 'nice' but it relies a little too heavily on the dumb 'slow wade through water' mechanic for more than half of the puzzles in the game. I hope one day it gets a sequel or update to rectify the over-reliance on probably the worst mechanic.

  • @MethosOhio
    @MethosOhio Před rokem +2

Games would be a lot better in VRChat if there were a way to have saved state, so you didn't have to complete the whole game in one run.

Anyone remember the sao anime way of opening your menu. Yea thats basically a normal thing yiu can do in vrchat in certain worlds and its absolutely dope. The best 1 i have seen being the just b club 3 menu.... Cuz it spawns wherever your hand is and shows a mini you and gives you access to the people wanting to join along with a camera outside your door. And you can open your OTHER menu while still in your menu. Meaning you can have your camera, your social menu, AND your headset menu open all at once. I do this just so i can keep track of when my friends hope on so i can invite them, keep track of who is at my door, and keep track of the time and my battery

A lot of it comes down to either size or being unable to test. Bigger worlds like Pop Escape and Devouring simply can't fit on the Quest's hardware. And for smaller worlds that can, it can be a lot of work test and make sure everything works correctly for cross-platform play. Its extra hard if the developer doesn't have a Quest and so has no way to test if what they are making works properly.

The thing that kind of steers me away from VR games is that they almost always fall into one of three categories
    1) proof of concept: VR things that are technically games, in the same way an arcade machine is a game. Short, repetitive, and lacking in story.
    2) Party games: a fun mechanic to play with friends, but not so helpful to solo players
    3) VR Ports: A VR port for a game that wasn’t originally designed for the medium and doesn’t do anything different from a first-person game
I just haven’t heard much from the VR single-player scene and have been holding off until it’s more focused on
