The first thing my therapist told me when I started therapy for my PTSD and CPTSD was "A person's mental illness may explain but does not excuse their behaviour!" and that makes a lot of sense.
When it comes to psychology and spirituality, the most dangerous humans are the ones that learn the language, but don’t do the work.
Yeah, they say it's actually bad for psychopaths to go to therapy because they use it against people. Abusive people learn how to abuse better with better tools

I would add that applies beyond psychology and spirituality, in all matters of ethics, which goes across disciplines - anyone with any position of authority: teachers, professors, social workers, lawyers, etc

Hey, elder millenial here. I think part of what frustrates most people of any generation about those coming after them is that younger generations need to grow up and gain life experience in order to become self-sufficient. Skills and experiences like that don't just download into people's brains on their 16th birthday, you know? I know I was an idiot about a lot of things as a young adult that seem super obvious to me now. I also remember the boomers rolling their eyes at us and complaining about how helpless and unprepared we were for adulthood when I was gen z's age and entering the workforce. Generational differences are real, but I'm skeptical that this particular issue is a generation thing. I think it might be more of a "growing up" thing that most of us go through in one way or another.

Being annoyed by the younger generation is the hallmark feature of elder generations since forever. Chill, Erin. Gen Z’s brain isn’t done cooking yet. 😂
Most 16 year olds are functionally useless, I was pretty much devoid of value until I was into my 30s. Every generation is going to look like an idiot when you're judging it when it's brain hasn't finished developing (that's well into your 20s btw before an average brain is finished).
Also, maybe, did she say what the mayo was even for? They may have just assumed it was to dip chips in, which is very common around the world instead of ketchup...
Don't take this the wrong way... but you're saying Gen Z isn't resourceful when you had to go up to the counter and ask for a utensil before you could spread mayo on a sandwich? Tear a bit of the box, use a french fry, find literally anything clean and flat. I think the brains of service industry members are broken from lack of pay, compassion, and job benefits, not what year they happen to be born.
Not to mention that the kid WAS resourceful. They didn't have mayo packets, so they found a different way to get the mayo for her. I'm so confused by that whole story and the defense of generational criticism.
I'm born in the 50's but SO tired of people dumping on genZ. They're beautiful and deserve our support. And I'm also sick of rich people with degrees slamming service jobs that get 8 hours of disrespect from the public and the management every day. If you're so "resourceful" make your own food.
Valid. Z & A and mid/younger millennials grew up in an entirely different world. Add the formative years of Z&A happening in isolation and their milestones not marked or celebrated remotely.
I'm a billion year old boomer who enjoys Dr. Huberman's show. I click on your video with the express intent of disliking this podcast. I've been duped. You guys are brilliant. It's like hacking a private Zoom meeting of witty friends riffing on fun topics. Nobody is posing for the camera. Well done.
Really? He sounds immature but all this is from one side. He says he tested negative, but somehow we know she didn't sleep with anyone else? Why aren't all the other supposed gf's infected? Is this any of our business? One article claiming this stuff, which honestly isn't that serious and definitely information that should stay between consenting adults.
@raincadeify I still like Dr. Huberman. I will continue to consume his content. But I did find the construction and delivery of this podcast amusing. I think Dr. Huberman will continue to thrive. It does seem that fame exacts a terrible price. No doubt, the journalist who wrote the article will have her life examined and dissected by some curious individual with a platform.

I love Andrew Hubermans vids as well.. There is enough info out there about his personal life now that it’s pretty obvious he’s either on the spectrum or leans into the cluster b category of personality disorders.. but nothing about his personal life leaches the importance of the data he provides.. it’s good stuff.. none of us have to date him.. additionally, yes.. yalls podcast is also awesome and I enjoy them..

Can we all agree that modern therapy culture has consumed and digested its own tail a long time ago and is currently chewing on the back of its neck?
Gen X without college degrees being the largest demographic that voted for tRump, is so terribly sad and infuriating. As a gen X woman with a college degree, I honestly don’t understand the rationale, motivation perceived benefit for voting on the side of a political party that is antithetical to their aspirations, hopes and dreams. Sometimes I think these people made so many mistakes in life that the only satisfaction they have left is to drag others down with them.
In 2016, I think Trump’s primary competition was two political dynasties that had decimated the non educated workers of America. Their trade deals put American union workers in competition with third world sweat shop labor while simultaneously gutting welfare. What did they replace it with? War and austerity. Clinton’s trade deals and welfare reform would generate the poverty and desperation needed for Bush’s illegal wars which would further decimate the American economy on top of killing hundreds of thousands of our kids for a lie. The American working class had been betrayed by the two political dynasties and Trump would use that to his advantage. Of course this was purely opportunistic. He duped many people. Still, we made that very easy to do by tryouts to shove two powerful political dynasties down people’s throats that have already failed us all.
I think Biden won for a reason and he’ll likely win again for this reason. I think Biden, for all of his flaws, understands the failures that crippled working class America enough to at least feign a since of populism which could get him reelected. In his first time running for Senate, he consulted a jr political analyst named Pat Caddell who advised him to instead of running against a specific person to run against “Washington DC”. Caddell had been studying the reasons why RFK and his ideological opposite George Wallace were popular among the same people. He determined the common factor was a sense of fighting those in power. What Hunter S Thompson called the “Fuck the bosses” vote. Needless to day, Biden would win that election. I think, with the exception of Bernie Sanders Biden is better suited to play that role than anyone else on the 2020 primary debate stage. However, I do think providing a genuine left wing populist alternative to the insane fascist clown show populism is the way we beat fascism in the long term.

Every generation has complained about the next, saying the exact same things. These young folks are learning how to be people in the world. They make the same awkward mistakes as every generation before them. They're learning problems solving skills as they grow into their personhood. I'm so disappointed when I see millennials (I'm millennial, but gen-x cusp) dump on gen-z the way we were dumped on just a few years ago. Do bettah! (still love y'all)

GenX here...when I was 16, I worked fast food. A customer approached the counter to ask a co-worker for extra ice. Without hesitation, he turned around, stuck his hand in the ice bin, and grabbed a handful. He then turned around and offered the (now horrified) customer a bare handful of ice.
My point is, the mayo box was an improvement. :)

For the record my parents did a pretty good job, giving us freedom but still curfews and life lessons. Also liberal, always called themselves independents which is a little why I didn't grow up knowing what party to go to, I'm still ind but have no choice but to vote Dem since I'm pro human rights, bodily autonomy, taking care of those in need, anti violence, and health care for all, etc.
A year or 2 ago a writer/comic with a podcast told us about that morning in NYC she went in a coffee shop and the barista didn't understand what black coffee was.

Gen-X here but maybe not the most feral - I was more free-range with my millennial son than my parents were with me - but I do have to say I know a lot of Gen-Xers that are Trumplovers. For a while it was hard for me to wrap my head around, because it wasn't just the jocks and rednecks. It's also the folks who were working class alternative types. I'm guessing they still identify as anti-establishment, but now they're all into elites who rail against other elites and blame all their problems on other poors instead of voting for people who are actually trying to do something for the working class.
I'm not so sure about the college-educated alternative types. I think most of them escaped this town and so I don't hear much from them, but I'm in the oil and gas industry so most of the degreed folks I know are also R as heck, but I do at least know some who used to be R's and hate Trump.
The frontal lobe is still forming well into a human’s 20’s. The frontal lobe is where we make our decisions. It’s nice knowing this as I give anyone under the age of 30 (and over 30 for some men) the grace they deserve as they grow into their wisdom years.

Regarding the box of mayo: my son works in fast food. They are not allowed to give out anything extra unless the customer specifically asks for it. If they do and don't charge the customer, they get a tongue lashing regarding profit margins. It may be more from fear of getting yelled at than the inability to problem solve. I mean seriously, how do you charge a customer for a utensil? 😂

When my youngest was a baby I spent about a year exclusively reading ARCs and posting reviews on Amazon and GoodReads. Some of them were truly amazing books that I never would have encountered otherwise. A actually emailed a couple of the authors with praise and asked to be notified when their next book came out. I love being the person to post the first review on something new and interesting.
Not unique to gen -z ,40 years ago ran into worse w/ middle aged dry cleaner recommending "just put a patch on it" for a stained dress shirt and 20 years ago w/ middle aged mechanic recommending super glue to repair windshield wiper he broke. Plus, nothing compares to the lack of problem solving by previous generations that left gen-z holding the bag for the rampant environmental, economic and political catastrophes we are responsible for.
Anybody under 25 has poor executive function. Which means they have difficulty considering other points of view and thinking logically. Their frontal lobes are not completely developed.
When Millennials were young, I went to a fast food place where the cash register was broken. I had to take out a calculator and add up my total for them.

Poor executive function in our 20ies? Nah. Women's frontal lobes are fully developed in our early 20ies. They are almost fully matured by the time we leave our teens, and almost fully developed frontal lobes are not completely useless. I wish I still had the level of executive function that I had when I was 20. I ran circles around the 30-50 year olds in my office both in the execution of complex multitasking and quick decision making for hours at a time, and operated largely from working memory.
I did make some poor decisions in relation to my dating life, but that kind of poor decisions seem to be made by single people in just about every age group.

Resourcefulness is a skill that is taught. If the kid doesn't know how to be resourceful it's usually because it's a skill that is underdeveloped due to opportunity or a lack of teaching from their parent/gaurdian. I feel for Gen Z, between iPad parenting and Covid, they really havent' had the opportunity to develop the same social skills that the rest of us have at their age. Everytime I interact with one I remind myself that they're behind and they need a little bit more guidance.

I get huge narc vibes from him, and this story has confirmed for me what I suspected. His problem is that his entire brand did appeal equally to men and women, but he just lost all the women. Cut his audience in half. My bet is he'll now go full on bro, like a cleaned up, more sophisticated Andrew Tate.
Agree totally. I followed his you tube when it began. And noticed how quickly his ego got caught up and he started doing way too many episodes and started taking on sponsorships.

I live with a millennial for the first time in my life and can confirm everything you say. I can't begin to explain everything they do that defies logic or makes any kind of common sense otherwise I'd be here writing all day. .It is truly amazing they are able to get up, get dressed and go to work every day without hand holding involved through the entire process since they contribute exactly ZERO to the household and stay shut in their room only emerging to collect their Uber Eats order every night. I will just give one example. One time the kitchen bin was full, and they took it to the front and left it in the middle of the yard. "It was full. I didn't know what to do." No I am not making this up.

The last time I ever went to Shoney's they seated us (me, wife, two small children) right next to the emergency exit. The bar you push to open the door and activate the alarm was jamming into my arm. But the main point here is: I asked the waitress for some hot sauce. Don't care what kind, just bring me some hot sauce. She gave me a look of utter confusion. She came back some time later with a small dish of some substance that we concluded had been cobbled together from ketchup and hot water.

The scariest thing I ever heard was a teacher at a faculty meeting I was speaking at about 20-25 yrs ago say they couldn't remember the last student they had with a shred of deductive reasoning ability. This has been part of the plan. I'll counter and defend the Genx/z's as victims of the decades-old program of dumbing down the populace. In some cases these capacities - part of normal intellectual and emotional development - do not exist. The are equally incapable of empathy. This is a HUGE problem Love you gals.

Agreed. I watched Hubernan's podcasts for info on the central and peripheral nervous system--not morality, religion or philosophy. Whether he was a convicted bank robber or murderer were not relevant.

Huberman has a BA and MA in psychology but then randomly got a neurobiology PhD from UC - Davis.
I think a lot of people don't have forward -thinking skills, of any age. I don't know what the common denominator is.

My friend and I work at a major land grant university system. She had a Gen Z assistant not know and not know how to find out how to copy/paste. (sigh) This person is a full BA-level graduate of a university and is a career path staff member.
They used phones not actual computers with keyboards so they don't know commands.

One way I find books is through hearing book talk on CZcams shows or podcasts. I recently got two books from listening to Hysteria. I bought Eve, by Cat Bohannon, and I got Vagina Obscura, by Rachel Gross; both were excellent-thanks for discussing them.
Lots of things Andrew Huberman has said has been helpful to me. You don’t need to take everything that everyone says with 100% certainty, take what you want and leave the rest.

Also - I've worked for feminist publishers for many years and I always reach out for blurbs on behalf of authors AND we have always published any additional blurbs (that don't fit on the back cover) in the front matter - we never tossed them. Support indie small presses! Interestingly, in my experience, it's often the big boys that thrust most of the work on authors. As we know, they l-o-o-ve profit for the least possible amount of work. I don’t think you made clear that Huberman lied to each of the women, saying that he wanted to be in a monogamous relationship with each one. Based on that, they had unprotected sex with him. He’s a lot worse than a guy who just is sleeping with six women at the same time.
So why aren’t they talking about the fact that the accuser is under investigation by the DOJ and that’s why Hubberman got out of the relationship? Morning ladies, that McDonalds mayo incident sounds exactly like me lecturing my son after every chore had had to do & rushed it. If he took his time & did it right the 1st time w/o his cellphone in 1 hand wouldn’t have to be on his ass about it.
That part was funny to me for 2 reasons, the way she tells the story is just funny on its face but I also cannot comprehend a "Box of mayonnaise" I just do not get it why? how? does mayo come in a box? just open it up and a cardboard box with mayo in it? this sounds terrible. I must not get out much because where I'm from mayonnaise comes in a jar. or small packets... I cannot imagine this box of mayo being anything less but gross. What? in a box?

Last week a younger coworker asked me for a hand bringing in supplies from her car cuz "they were wedged under something". I went down and was able to grab them without moving a thing...nothing was wedging them in. I just had to slide them out. It was...interesting. oy!
Just a reminder that all young people of all generations have moments like this, learning and growing is a process. It’s always sad when people fall into that cycle of criticizing the new young people for the same things they did at the same age, and their parents before them, etc etc.

I think Andrew is great. I think Jordan Peterson is great. I like that Peterson & Huberman (for that matter) have emerged as leaders, mentors & even heroes for so many to follow. I enjoy Joe Rogan & Lex Friedman. After familiarizing myself with these guys, I believe they all have nothing but good intentions. I’m thankful that they were available during lockdown. I’m glad they exist. I sincerely hope ppl don’t jump ship & discount all the good they are doing as emergent leaders that inspire ppl & help others - much less based on an article that can’t be proven as fact. First, it’s not anyone’s biz. Secondly, would a group of jilted exes ever have glowing reviews? A gaggle of scorned lovers ganging up together probably isn’t the most credible source especially without the truth being known. What do they say? Three sides to every story: what (6 exes) say, what he says & what really happened? Yet more importantly, who cares? This is just one more example of MSM altering perceptions of reality. After all, if it’s in the media then it must be true, eh? It’s unfortunate if such nonsense negatively affects the good that these guys are trying to do every day.
Personal integrity is the core of a person's character and informs all aspects of their lives ie, if he lies to his nearest and dearest, you can't trust he has integrity in any other part of his life, including his work. His actions are literally telling you who he is. It's incredible to me that people ignore this; actual fact and think just because someone comes across really well, then they must ok and only have good intentions.

I work with one. and the questions this kid asks me makes me think he literally does not understand the world outside of a smart phone. And they never go to the next task that he literally does every single day without me catching him standing around on his phone. If he does go on to the next task without being told its never exactly right its almost right.

I think that one of the most valuable, distinguishing human traits is EMPATHY. And it is flagging, apparently, in our current culture. No one with five molecules of empathy would give a person with a dry chicken sandwich a box of mayo (are you kidding me rn?!) without a way to spread it around on their sandwich. Hello? Think it through, lil buddy! 😆
Empathy, as a basic skill and mindset, is at least partially atrophying in younger generations. I don't see it being taught in schools or by parents nearly enough. I do fully admit this thought could be me just shaking my cane from my very late boomer bandstand. The lack of empathy, imo, is rampant in all generations to some degree in this age of unbridled greed and self-importance. Everyone is screaming "Look at me listen to me!" and not enough of us are listening. ::coughs annoyed grandma dust::
My deepest, and most rewarding, practice of personal growth is cultivating empathy. Not sympathy, but empathy; the sense of shared values and humanity and experience that allows us to resonate compassionately and vibrantly with another human. I'm also working to notice when I am stuck in opinion, especially emotion-based,factually unfounded opinion. Like right now, with my attitude about the younguns, haha! But, really. What would life be like in a culture that valued the skill of empathy over the skill of acquisition and hoarding?
