- Part 1/2 of Catherine and I's trip to Slovenia fly fishing for Marble Trout. We fished the Lapena and Soca rivers and were completely blown away by the pristine beauty that we found. We will definitely be back.

It really is!
Someone think that here in Europe nothing to see, but look at Slovenia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Greece, Kavkaz, Georgia...I even not say about Turkey, Spain and Italy
Wow. I am from New Zealand, so I am spoilt.....I was not expecting this gorgeous place
Are you from the north or south island? Consider me jealous that you are from NZ!
What a stunning place and lovely fish. Nice video!
Thank you very much!
Nice scenic spot, interesting trout, looks like an offshoot of a brown trout, those marbles…
It looks like the perfect day fishing! Incredible scenery! Thank you for sharing your adventure in Slovenia!

It's breathtaking. Thank you.

My grandfather grew up there and he was the one that taught me to fish. Such a beautiful country with lovely people. Great video guys 🎣👍🏻
That is awesome! Slovenia was hands down our favorite trip we have ever done. Thanks for the kind words
Wow, what a beautiful places, what a views 😲 !
Well done, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man I have to say, that water was amazing. Looked like tropical water and you would think the water temps would be in the 80's.
That's what we kept saying as well! It does look like it would be in the Caribbean... minus the giant mountains!
Amazing
Looks like a wonderful trip!
Thanks Matt! If you ever get a chance to go I would highly encourage you to do it!
Slovenia looks like a beautiful country. Awesome river/stream!
You should definitely go if you get the chance! It was one of the best vacations/fishing trips I have ever taken.
Slovenia is gorgeous.

Wow, I would love to fish some of the waters in Southeast Asia. What fish are you targeting there? Mahseer?
Absolutely beautiful river!! Thanks for sharing an amazing experience.
Glad you enjoyed it!
amazing
Great Fishing!
Thanks!
Slovenia is awesome!
Have you been there?
@@isaacness yes! We were there last month (October 2022). Toured Ljubljana, Postojna caves (incredible), Predjama castle, Lake Bled, and Vintgar gorge. Headed down to Croatia after that. Wish we had more time in the mountains of Slovenia. I was amazed how clean the country was.
That's awesome! We visited all of those except Postojna caves and Predjama castle. We thought the same thing about how clean it was, even in Ljubljana!
@@isaacness the caves were the most incredible I have seen in the world. Worthy of a return trip.

Yes they do! They are very similar fish
Well done on the editing/ music selections. Looked like a blast of a trip!
Thanks so much! I'm still trying to figure out video editing so that means a lot.

Biutiful Slovenia fiscing
Great video. Good content and flow. Amazing fish too. I'm going to have to convince my wife to take our next trip there. I'll just show her this video and I'm sure she'd be happy to spend time in one of the most beautiful places in all God's creation.
Thanks! Slovenia is a great spot of couples. Lots of good food, beautiful scenery, and it is very clean and safe. Let me know if you guys end up going!
I should book a trip. My family is from the area, though they were ethnically German. There was a large German presence in the area prior to wwi. My grandma was Slovenian.
you should definitely go. it was one of the best trips we have ever taken.
The stuff of dreams. Until you mentioned that a big rainbow swam 15’ for the caddis, i thought the fishing was very technical. I especially liked the shot of the first fish sipping dries under the bank. Great filming all the way through.
Thanks! There were certainly times where it was technical but overall I would say presentation seemed to be more important than fly pattern in the rivers I fished.
Gorgeous terrain
Yes it was!
This place is on my bucket list. Amazing video and thanks for sharing! Single barbless flies should be the only way to go, especially given the decline in fisheries along with the fishing pressure. Just my opinion. Enjoyed the video. Cheers..
Glad you enjoyed it Joe! you should go if you get the chance. Well worth the time and money

Hi Isaac. Ever fish in Ireland?
@@cuanmuyllaert6930 No I haven't! I would love to though
Check my buddy's channel "Where to fish in ireland" his name is Dietrich and you'll see our wee adventures there. There's a lot of fishing, mostly free!
@@cuanmuyllaert6930 Will do!
I'm a big LA Kings hockey fan, and Kings forward Anze Kopitar is from Jesenice, Slovenia. Always wanted to ask him if he ever went fishing for the Marble Trout. I know I want to. Great video, thanks for posting!
I don't know how anyone could be from Slovenia and not fish, its just so incredible there! Thanks for watching!
What a wonderful river!!! 🤩 thank you guys. Do I need a sort of fishing license from Slovenia or local authorities?
Yes! there are actually different licenses for different sections of the rivers depending on which club manages it. I would recommend talking to a guide or local fly shop!
The Adriatic countries are just something else when it comes to nature’s beauty. Might book a trip to Slovenia-Croatia tour for next summer for fishing, hiking, diving and touring historical places. The only bad thing is that half of EU is there for the same things.
You should do it! we didn't see all that many tourists compared to many other places you can visit.
Time it well. Most tourists go to the Balkans from end of June...
Go before that...
Great video Isaac. Wondering what equipment you recommend bringing for May-June (eg. line weights, rod length). Also, was your guide primarily recommending euro-nymphing, or swithcing between nymphs, dries and streamers? Planning a trip this spring.
Hey Joe, Thanks for the kind words! I would recommend bringing standard 9' 5 weights to fish here unless you are more experienced at Euro nymphing and have special Euro rods in which case I would bring those. Almost everyone over there euro nymphs because of the regulations on flies/tackle. Most fisheries in Slovenia only allow you to use a single barbless fly with no suspension indicators or split shot which means if you want to nymph you basically have to euro nymph. Having said that, there is definitely still plenty of opportunity to fish dries and streamers which were both effective strategies for us.
Very helpful info. Thanks Isaac
Wow! Amazing video. This really speaks about timing for me. I was there in late July/ August of 2022 and fished a few rivers, including the Soća. Caught a few fish but man there were way to many people on and off the river. Local guides get pretty pissed when you don’t buy there “guide services” an only rent there gear.
Regulations were a bit difficult to get a hold of and understand as an American.
(Everything around hunting/fishing in Europe is difficult if you’re used to the American system)
Overall this is a great video, it really shows the best of what Slovenia has to offer. Just don’t let a nice video like this trick you into thinking this is an “easy” thing to accomplish. 🤙
Very true! We definitely lucked out on our timing for this trip. I would love to go back at a different time of year to see how it varies.
Use guide Uros Kristian Urko fishing adventures issacs guide knows his business too just watch and see how he interacts
Beautiful video, thanks for sharing! Seems you had an awesome time. ..what rod weights were you using for the French leader and for the dry fly rod? Were you using an indicator?
Hey there! I brought a 590-4 sage response and a 790-4 sage pulse. Our guide also let us use one of his sage ESN rods for a lot of the french nymphing. I think that rod was a 3 weight. The rivers there have some strict regulations on the use of indicators, multiple flies, split shot, and barbed hooks so you need to look them up for each stream you fish and even which fishing club you are fishing in. If I were to go back I would probably plan on bringing a euro nymphing rod and a 9 foot 5 weight.
@@isaacness Thanks, those were nice fish you were hooking into !
Beautiful rivers and fish! Which trout shop/guide service did you use?
Thanks! The guide service is tagged in my first pinned comment on the video, let me know if you have trouble finding it and I'll make sure you get their info.

Wow just stumbled upon this , now I’m thinking of taking my daughter next summer since we will be close , what size rods did u pack? 5wt’s or? Thanks love the films!
I would definitely recommend it! we still say this was probably our favorite trip we have taken. 5wt's would be perfect for this water. Thanks for the support!

@@isaacness Hi Isacc! Somehow its not showing me any pinned comment on this video. Or is it on another video? Also one question: Is only flyfishing allowed there? Or are there parts where you can fish with a spinning reel/rod?
The guide service we went with was "Fishing Guides Slovenia" and our guide was Žiga. Here's the link to their site fishing-guides-slovenia.com/
I am honestly not sure about the regulations for fishing with spinning rods. I imagine you should be able to use them on certain stretches of rivers at the least!
Wow....looks amazing, what month was that ?
Thanks! we were there in mid May but everyone told us it was unseasonably warm. Maybe more typical of weather you would see in June

super nice, in which area did you fish?
We fished the Soča and the Idrijca rivers!
super nice, a wonderful area👍👍
Did you go for Huchen at all, or just marble trout?
Just marble trout on this trip! this was May so Huchen weren't around. I would love to go back to target them though! Have you done some Huchen fishing?
@@isaacness no unfortunately even though I lived in the Balkans for many years when I was young.
I fished the Mongolian hucho, the taimen, in far East Russia. The European cousin of his is so much closer but still, timing has not matched up to organize the trip.
Taimen look like and incredible species to target also! How was your experience targeting them?
@@isaacness the whole Amur-basin experience was something out of this world. I went for the river, not the taimen. So, there were multiple goals, gained step by step for a month. First goal was the Amur pike, done that, moved to their various catfish species, then mongolian redfin, mongolian asp, skygazer etc. etc. 24 species including local Amur trout and grayling species, and only then, 5 last days, taimen.
I thought it would be difficult, mainly because of the way various travellers to Mongolia have portrait it, but it's not. It's not that rare in Russia. They have much healthier populations.
I had my first 10pounder in the first hour. 5 days later I already had something like 15 on that range, one above 20 pounds. I had only one take from a really big one, one take and I lost it, so, next time my guide tells me I need bigger hooks, I'll trust him.
One guy in our group, he had Huchen experience, so he had specific Slovakian and Serbian handmade lures for huchen, and he smashed the taimen on those, had 5 fish above 40 pounds each. So, yeah, when you get to Slovakia again, get those big jointed Slovakian-made lures for Huchen.
When it comes to fly fishing, well, I have to be honest, my equipment wasn't strong enough for the task. I fly fished for grayling. Literally hundreds of them EVERYWHERE in the streams feeding Amur, but a lot smaller than European grayling, and also lenok trout. Lot's of lenok, you'll love them if you ever get there.
Good fishes. 👍When next part?
Thanks! I just published it now, check it out!
Hi Isaac, geat video
I would relly like to go on a trip to Slovenia next year, how much does a permit cost, is there a permit for like a week or a month or just a normal all year pass? And how much does it cost?
Thankss
Hey! Our permits I believe were 75 euros each for our first day and 100 euros each for the second day. I am not sure how long they were each good for as we only fished the one day. I would recommend reaching our to Fishing Guides Slovenia (Their info is at the end of the video) for more up to date info!
Hello. Great movie. Iwonder where to sleep there to get fast enough to this two rivers. Second I got one question how does it cost to get fishing pass with a guide. I am from Poland and I love firshing with my son that is 16 yrs old now.
We stayed in a town called Kobarid that was about 30 minutes from each fishing spot. I cant remember exactly how much the guide was, sorry! their info is in my first pinned comment if you want to reach out to them. They helped me find a place to stay in Kobarid as well.

nice and everything just tell us how much is the fishing licence for these rivers
If I remember correctly it was about 75 euros per person for the first day and around 110 euros for the second day.
Is this a brook / brown hybrid?
nope! that would be a tiger trout. They look pretty similar but they are completely separate species.

Min 15:06 I too had parked the car where they parked it. I caused an accident with a truck that went into the oncoming lane and collided with a car. I could only receive a parking fine but I was still morally guilty.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! I wonder if it definitely was the same spot because where we parked there was a fairly large pull off. Large enough to ensure that we were safely parked out of the way. I hope that you had a good trip besides that incident.
@@isaacness I live in Italy. I know the area well. It seems to me that that bridge is in the upper part of the Idrica. There were no problems with the trip but the fishing was not special. Those places were wonderful in the days of communist Yugoslavia. There was always the Police watching. Asphyxiating but it was enough to respect the rules to have fun. There were giant trout to fly in the evening in the summer.
muharjenje z indikatorjem je kot rikolov s plovcem. float fishing is amerikan way,far from fly fishing
No doubt It is a beauty... But there are mamy rivers in the world...
good point, which is your favorite?
Happy for you, that you found such beautiful rivers and trout, and can afford to travel halfway around the world to fish there. But...North America has hundreds of rivers more beautiful and dozens of trout species prettier. Just to make a point, jump to 1:27 (for a river) and 13:11 (for Dolly Varden trout). See how your river and marble trout compare! czcams.com/video/v0dE-OKcg0M/video.html
I wonder if fish die from stress? I honestly fish and eat. I find It disrespectful most fishermen play with fish and won’t even eat them at all
😂
That is a great question! Some really good studies have been done on this proving that catch and release is very safe for fish and usually results in a very low mortality rate. I can say that from my personal experience guiding in Colorado, because we fished the same waters all year, there were many fish with unique patterns or coloration that we would actually name and have clients catch several times a year and even in different years.
I'm not against catch and keep fishing by any means either. I have often kept fish to eat and think its a great part of the sport.
Why does everyone use these old nylon nets. I mean good god a fishpond net will last a lifetime..... also they won't rip up the trouts slime coat.
Scuse me but there’s s lot of rivers better than this in Patagonia, and with no contamination in the waters or in the air and with wild wild trout. And the best of all there’s nobody in the surrounded…

Indicator fly fishing is really boring
Fly fishing with a bobber… american 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
haha its the only way I know!
Looks like a fantastic place to fly fish, just had to stop watching you handling the trout, are you not aware that every time you hold a hold a fish you either do damage to it’s protective slime layer or even worse, if you raise a fish out of the water for your ego trophy photo, you damage the fishes organs. I can’t believe worldly travellers like yourselves don’t take more care of the fish you catch. It sickens me to think of the amount of fish that you catch & release are fish that will more than likely swim away and not survive to be caught again. I’m a keen fly fisherman myself living in Australia, so my agenda , if you will is to educate fisher all over to not raise the fish from the safety of the water, far less to handle them suspended in your hands. If you’re going to let them go, let them live. And enjoy your trips outdoors doing what we all enjoy doing.
Always the holier than thou guy in the comments.
@@brianmoeller6839 if nothing is said then people continue to think they are not doing any harm, all of the handling could be done a whole lot better. It’s commonsense & maybe you should use a bit more of yours before you comment. Take some time & do a little research Brian you’ll find I’m right, not running people down just creating some awareness to preserve the fishing available.
I am a marble trout, I live in crystal water, don't come at me with 3x and shit.....i see that, not even 4xm maybe a 5x you sucked on for a few hours like a tootsie pop.Dont even get me started on your indicators, bobbers....
Why take a fish out of water only to release it afterwards? That's really stupid.
