Thanks everyone for your positive comments, been really great to read. Had a lot of comments about it being too light and folky though so thought we should clear some things up.
Much to our dismay we cannot grow beards like Shagga & the mountain tribes and this affects our voices. Rather than being gruff savages with tankards, we are more like Dornish bards sipping sweet wine and eating grapes. (think the Blue Bard or Marrilion!) Therefore this song has a light folky, summery feel. However, in the words of house Stark, "winter is coming". Before long men bigger than us with mighty beards and the ability to feed your genitals to goats will be singing this tune in whorehouses from Dorne to Winterfell. All we ask is that you use your imagination and if you are lucky enough to have a beard, sing along!
This is the second song in our project to write and record all songs from the great series of books - A song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin.
Must point out quickly that the amazing artwork is not ours, it was done by 'dragonphase' (show them love here: dragonphase.deviantart.com/art...)
"A bear there was,"
"A bear, A BEAR!
"All black and brown,"
"And covered in hair!
"Oh come they said,"
"Come to the fair!"
"The fair? said he,
"But I'm a bear!"
"All black and brown,"
"And covered in hair!"
"And down the road,"
"From here to there,"
"Three boys, a goat,"
"And a dancing bear!"
"They danced and spun,"
"All the way to the fair!"
"Oh! sweet she was,"
"And pure and fair,"
"The maid with honey,"
"In her hair!
"The maid with honey,"
"in her hair!"
The bear smelled the scent,
"On the summer air!"
"The Bear! The Bear!"
"All black and brown,"
"And covered with hair!"
"He smelled the scent,"
"On the summer air,"
"He sniffed and roared,"
"And smelled it there!"
"Honey on the summer air!"
"Oh I'm a maid,"
"I'm pure and fair,"
"I'll never dance,"
"With a hairy bear,"
"I'll never dance,"
"With a hairy bear!"
"The bear,the bear!"
"Lifted her high,"
into the air!"
The bear, the bear, the bear!"
"I called for a knight!"
"But you're a bear!"
"A bear! A bear,"
"All black and brown,"
"And covered in hair!"
"She kicked and wailed,"
"The maid so fair,"
"But he licked the honey,"
"From her hair!"
"He licked the honey,"
"From her hair!"
"Then she sighed and squealed,"
"And kicked the air,"
"She sang: My bear so fair,"
"And off they went,"
"The bear! The bear!"
"And the maiden fair!"

George R.R. Martin should get together with a composer and actually write all the music from the books, and release a songbook, with chords and everything. Would be really cool.
I agree
He just needs to finish his next book lol
@@ranand1007 I think you need to set some more realistic expectations. Like dragons being real all of the sudden.

This song suits Brienne and Jamie perfectly. Brienne is the bear and Jamie is the maiden fair. :D
wakaka2waka xD i died
@Frost Rusher And the maiden fair jumped in to rescue her.
Although I do believe the song was about Jorah Mormont and his wife
Brilliant xd
I always though that speaks about Ser Jorah Mormont storyline
It's not like the song was written by North men. I don't see why some one would complain about your voice. Definitely captures a low born tavern singer some where near Kings Landing. Perfectly puts Marrilion in my mind.
everyone has critics, let's just hope it doesn't affect his artistry.

This reminded me of Robert and Cerscei for the most part, considering Robert has black/brown hair and is quite large whereas Cerscei has honey coloured hair. As well as the maid calling for a knight instead of a bear, which might as well be Jaime, so it all sort of links up that way in my head.
Aimee Rohrer you’re a genius
Well, it was majestic theory but there's something doesn't make sense. In the end of song fair maiden fall in love because of bear's 'technic'. But Robert and Cercei's relationship was total nightmare. Still, it was greatest GOT theory I've ever saw.

Songs like this just make ASOIAF feel like an actual living world. It brings so much immersion and makes you not think of just the dark politics and intrigue, but also wonder, thinking of all of the peasants dancing and singing and just living. George RR Martin is incredible.
tribute to house mormont
+Nilesh Kumaraswamy It makes sense, Jorah Mormont married a maiden fair, she drained his resources until he was pressured to sell poachers into slavery. That led to his exile.
+TheVarusPro It could be. Though I doubt it, Brienne has never even met Vargo Hoat, he's a foreign sellsword and his sigil is the goat, not bear.
+Parthanaux She met him and bit his ear off and it festered and Vargo would've died from it, if the Mountain hadn't cut him to pieces first...
+Parthanaux its Locke...
+Weljash in the TV series maybe
I can see why people may think this song is about rape but to be honest, that theory really only fits one of the verses. To me it sounds a lot like a love story, of a man who is villified for his appearance or something of the like and believes no one would like/love him. He meets people like him (the boys and the goat) and becomes their friend. They meet a girl whom he falls in love with, but who is looking for a much handsomer hero (I called for a knight but youre a bear). She refuses him until she learns of his sweet/gentle disposition and falls for him.
Ashwin Ramaswamy A great deal of things. Honey is created by bees and bees have been seen as a symbol of duty. Licking the honey fro her hair could mean liberating her from her duties, running away together. Also think of the bedding ceremony, where the bride is lifted and carried to the bed chamber, in which case she may have been arranged to marry him and won her favour once getting to know him. Or honey could simply stand for emotional walls that he over comes. Poetry isnt this or that, my friend.
raggedy-smith I totally agree, the song has a very gaelic (Irish) feel to it doesn't it?
raggedy-smith thats the best comment i heard so far.
raggedy-smith (Sorry for the english) Interesting interpretation, as for me the song is just an illustration of the sadistic enjoyments by the northmen in the series. Very ironical song where the bear seems to be filled with the purest intentions where let's face it : He's a bear and their dance will never be about something fair.

When she chose the bear
This song can apply to many relationships in the books.
Jorah/Deny (House Mormont's sigil is a bear, and Dany has got fair hair)
The Hound/Sansa ("I called for a KNIGHT but you're a bear")
Jaimie/Brienne too, in a way - he is blond (fair) and beautiful and she is a very manly maid... also he saves her from a bear...
I actually though that this song is for Ramsay Bolton and Sansa Stark
I know a lot of people are talking about what this song means about but let’s take a minute to appreciate how great the music is.
I remember that in the books when Sansa first met with Olenna and Margaery, the fool was asked to sing this. The way this song has been composed fits perfectly into that situation. Heightened tensions and folksy music.
This just shows how amazing writer Martin is to come up with this amazing song. It perfectly fits into medieval period and I love it .
The best version to date. Freaking love this.
It has the right feel to it, not like the hold steady's version. That sounds to me like Volbeat trying to sing the Eagles, it doesn't work.
This is still the absolute best version of this song. So much
Dude. I love you. If I have a shit day this always picks me up. You have a wonderful voice and it's my favorite family song. I just wanted to actually thank you, because I play this when I'm sad lol
That's one of the nicest comments we've ever had on this video! Thank you so much and I'm really glad it helps cheer you up :) stay strong - a very small man can cast a very big shadow
I absolutely adore the idea of drinking some fine ale in a tavern with this music as an amusement.
The show's worked better with the feeling of the scene it was put into, but overall yours is way better, it has just an amazing "celtic" touch which just goes too damn well with the entire Westeros thing =)
Really good job sir, the internet salutes you!
Indeed, a wonderfull version! Not very bawdy at all, though, but beautifull!
It works really well, because the people we see signing it, Roose Boltons men, are from the North, and they've given the north a HARD CORE celtic touch.
For some reason I can imagine Ramsay Bolton singing this. He’s described as having “a singer’s soul” in the books.
Fun Fact: In the episode the bear and the maiden fair, the bear that Brienne of Tarth fights actually has a name, his name is Bart the bear and he’s actually pretty iconic
The night is dark and full of terrors.
Manuel Elizaldi And bears.

this is by far my favorite version
I haven't seen, nor watched game of thrones, but this slaps like nothing else eh. I love the woodwind just dancing through the song, and man you have a fine singing voice I hope you continue creating for this genre.

+christocakes I got out of the navy a year ago, but you best believe we would play this while drinking. And it still brings me joy to this day!
I’m sure this has been said before but this is so much better than the version they did for the show
I just love the scene the Bolton riders are singing this song in. Having cut off Jamie's hand in the previous night and behaving like being on a village fair. Their cruelty is almost awesome.
Listening in 2024 while the internet is blowing up over women with bears.
I wonder if GRRM ever heard this song? I'm sure he would love this version.
After reading about the song for the hundredth time, I HAD to hear it. Now I get why it's so popular in Westeros :)
Fun fact: Unlike most people think, this song isn't about Jorah and Dany. It's about Jaime and Brienne! Lol Brienne is the hairy bear and Jaime is the maiden fair with sunlight in his hair! Mindblowing.

Are you entirely sure which you don't know why the Bear (Jorah Mormont from the Bear Island) and the Maiden Fair (who has blonde hair like honey) makes you think of it?
Fantasyeverything It also represents Sandor and Sansa and Jaime and Brienne.

Adrian Mantsch But in "Jaime and Brienne", Who is the Bear and who the Fair?

and this is great.
By far the best version of this song available. It has a real bard feel to it, great fit for the setting. I'm responsible for at least 43 of your views, you're welcome. lol
Man this version is unmatched 🙌
This song fits perfectly on Dany and Drogo.
+The_Howler You can make that connection (although it fits Dany and Jorah much better, since Jorah is a Mormont and therefore a bear), but it's actually about Jamie and Brienne.
+Valeren You could argue it's about Arya and the Hound
NXTG3N3 You could. It fits a lot of the relationships in the story, and that's very likeyl on purpose. GRRM has a great way of making his stories rhyme with themselves (part of the reason for that is that he's basically been stealing ideas from his other books, taking all the best stuff and putting it into ASOIAF). But the lyrics most closely and specifically reference Jamie and Brienne (3 boys, a goat, and a dancing bear), and the song is sung multiple times during their story in both book and show.
Valeren I mean the song lyrics literally fit Dany and Khal Drogo. "All back and brown and covered in hair" "The maid with honey in her hair"
"Oh I'm a maid,"
"I'm pure and fair,"
"I'll never dance,"
"With a hairy bear,"
"I'll never dance,"
"With a hairy bear!"
Dany's reluctance to marry Drogo,
and with the final verse her eventual acceptance.
It's probably been written so that who it's about is up to interpretation, in a way it fits a lot of the characters
Would you rather be alone in the woods with a bear or a strange man?

Sorry about the sapphires

The best version of Bear and the Maiden Fair. Instantly makes me wish I had a glass of ale in my hand.
Thank u, I read the books in Spanish and I couldn't imagine the song, I this this is even more iconic than "rains of castamere" and it would have been great if this were used in the series.

Nenad Krstic Because Dany has fleas.
***** That's not a nice thing to say to someone joking around, geez, you'd think Game of Thrones fans would be kinder to other fans.
***** Fun fact, the song of Ice and Fire is Jon Snow getting with Dany. Take that with your chosen one!
Has anyone else noticed that this is most likely about Jorah and his former wife? We know that common singers especially like to make fun of royalty (especially the song about the lion in King Robert's bed preparing him for death and "the boar did all the rest") The sigil of House Mormont is a bear, Jorah is huge and hairy, and he wins his wife not because of good looks, but because he did amazing in a tourney and stole her away to Bear Island (which she ended up hating). I don't think this would be about Jorah and Dany, well because it was already around when they met, and also because the situations just dont match.
I think you are overthinking yourself. I justt look at the song as a folksong, it adds diversity and culture to the series
This song was written before Jorah was even alive.
This song is about Jorah and his wife, I don't care what George says. Its too fucking similar to that situation. Jorah's sigil is a bear and he met his wife at the fair like in the song. It was written by a prophet who saw what would happen to Jorah in the future. Wasn't there a traveling bard who had visions and who met Dunk and Egg.
James Bond "I don't care what the author of the books says, my theory is canon"
Azure Kite It says so in the books, there was a traveling bard who had prophetic dreams, maybe its how the bloody song was written. Every other character in the series has visions, why not the composer of that song.
I have been replaying this nonstop for the past 3 hours... STILL LOVE IT TO PIECES. Great version
I was looking for this on spotify but i can't seem to find it. Honestly this is better than every version out there

As a bear, I approve of this. Very descriptive of our good looks and qualities, displays all of out favorite things, and its clear they know how hairy we are.
Thanks so much for this beautiful arrangement. For me, this is the definitive version. For some reason, every single other cover out there seems to be metal/punk. Not that there’s anything wrong with those genres, but I want to hear how this might actually sound in Westeros!

Yeah this cover was perfect
I thought the episode was about Jorah Mormont and Daenerys, due to him being 'the bear' due to the sigil of his house, and her being the fairest maiden in all the land. But instead it was about Brienne fighting a bear.
This deserves way more recognition than it does❤️. Also this song is the reason all my friends have given me the nickname of Bear which has now stuck and im glad this song is its origins
