Murder by the Book, Publish or Perish - if Columbo taught me one thing, it's to never enter into some kind writing deal with Jack Cassidy.

Brilliant to get the police to prove your innocence before they turn to you as a suspect. Built in reasonable doubt for the trial.

That last bit with "those people" always gets me. I know it's coming and it's still like seeing the gotcha for the first time, every time.

The acting is all terrific, but the writing is just superb. The mental and verbal jousting, just great. Such an entertaining and enduring show.

When he says: "One more thing"...may as well put your hands out and say: Arrest me. Cause he has you.

The perfect combination of Actors, Writing, Directing, and everything else. In my opinion the ORIGINAL run of Columbo is in the Top Five of shows ever produced. Twilight Zone, Columbo, Gun smoke, after that it’s all open for debate. Jack Cassidy was such a good actor. A shame his demons got the better of him. Cassidy, Culp, McGoohan, the Holy Trinity of Columbo Villains. So many good performances actually. Even the actors in walk on rolls were perfect. Just a perfect show. I watch the episodes repeatedly. To make a show where they tell you who committed the crime at the beginning and still make an incredibly interesting and suspenseful show is pure genius. The cat and mouse between the elite rich snobs and the seemingly clueless Columbo is again, Genius. Columbo basically creating the persona of the hapless Public Servant is incredible writing. And of course, Peter Falk is the show. If ever the perfect marriage of actor and character existed it was Columbo. There’s only a few other casting choices so perfect that I can think of. Just a fabulous and timeless show. Even though we’re talking 50 years ago or more, it’s never dated. Just perfect. Love Me Some Columbo.

This was a great episode not only because Jack Cassidy played the murderer, but the actor playing the person the murdered writer is none other than Mickey Spillane who created the private detective Mike Hammer. The lady Columbo is talking to at the beginning of this clip, she was a belly dancer in another Columbo episode, and I remember her from an episode of Star Trek as well where she falls in love with Spock after they have travelled back in time 5000 years to a frozen wilderness. That was one of my favourite Star Trek episodes as well.

Jack Cassidy had a brilliant career and a very tragic ending. He slept with a cigarette, that fell and burned his apartment down.

Columbos attention to detail is unmatched but what truly makes him so great imo is his mastery of human psychology. What kinda man gets told he might’ve killed someone while he was blacked out and then nonchalantly says “ oh I guess it was me, my bad”. That’s a red flag, he’s got no fear. If I was told I might’ve killed someone in a black out I’d be shitting my pants “what else did I do?”, “Did I kill someone else?” It’s a natural fear of the unknown. He didn’t show none of that which means he’s confident in that he’s gonna get off in the end. Hence the title
