The last time i took out the gearbox to remove the sump i decided enough is enough. I drilled 2 holes in the bell housing exactly under the 2 bolts and use a small ratchet and extension to remove the 2 bolts. Worked like a charm for me.

    Manufacturers design it like that.
    1. They don't want you working on your vehicle.
    2. Piss off the mechanic and make his life like hell
    3. They not working on it after it's made. So it's the next person problem.
That's the reason I can think of. I prefer if they make it less complicated. Makes it easier to work on. Simple job, has to become a big job

Werry good and education. And the burden 2 rear sump bolts.
Wel, you don't neat to take the gearbox, clutch and flywheel of or out.
If you can support the gearbox and eng with block and tackle. (Preverbally 2, on the same rail. 1 on eng and 1 on gearbox) You can just split the eng from gearbox.
And with a 1/4" drife socket and extension you can undo the laast 2 samp bolts in order to get the samp of and back. Then just made the eng back to the gearbox.
Good advice. Put like 3 or mor extra-long bolts thru the bellhousing to the eng to hold the eng, bellhousing alignment. Moov the eng about 2 " away from the bellhousing.
You can even unhook the intermediate plate from its dells to get more cases to the sump bolts.
If done it this week, just before X Mas 2023. I'm 69j. old (or young) and it worked.
Thy say a laze man will always try to take short cuts. Wel if it works. Why not.

Yes. If it's only the top cover leaking, I would just replace the single gasket. If you are lucky or buy OEM parts, you will be able to buy the single gasket only. On the other end, a full set of aftermarket non-OEM gaskets may cost Les than the one OEM.

It could have been a number of things. It is honestly difficult to say over the internet. Could have been an ignition problem if you had a wet spark plug and check engine light and hard start. If you broke the timing chain you will have to check valves and replace head gasket anyway.

I would replace the chain, sprockets and chain guide and tensioner. What sometimes happen is that the mount for the tensioner breaks off. If the chain slips a tooth on one of the sprockets, you will be having a bad day. (Think bent valves and so on.) And if you are going to split the engine and gearbox, you might as well replace all the spares. The spares are much cheaper than the labour to strip and fit. Hope it helps.
