Magnetic soundhole pickups for acoustic guitar can really be hit or miss. Some can be inexpensive and sound puny, others can be way expensive and sound only ok, but this one sits right in the middle and needs to be known by guitar geeks en masse.
The Dimarzio Black Angel soundhole pickup is one that is impressive in both the price and sonic quality categories. This pickup was released back in 2015. I have been able to spend a good amount of time with this pickup and I am very much impressed by its performance and flexibility.
This magnetic soundhole pickup has a great balance of brilliance and clarity along with a solid dose of string body. It is super easy to install, as you can put it in temporarily or have it permanently installed, and it happens to fall at a price point that in my opinion is very much a sweet spot. For right around $150-$175 you get a pickup that sounds great by itself and is extremely well prepared to interface with another pickup you may have.
The Dimarzio Black Angel is used by modern fingerstyle guitarists such as Mike Dawes, Luca Stricagnoli, and Antoine Dufour. In fact, most of these artists use the Black Angel as only part of their pickup system, which points at how flexible it is. The Dimarzio pickup has a phase inversion switch built in (a must for multi-source pickup systems), and full capability to be wired into a stereo jack.
If you are looking for a simple pickup to use for your live rig, or you are looking for something to add to your current pickup system, the Dimarzio Black Angel should definitely be in consideration.
Bill Lawrence has offered one since the early 70's that still sounds terrific - almost "acousticy".
Tony! If you' re able to read me, how does the dual piezo + soundhole combo works? Do I have to use one cable, plug in and that's it, or do I have to have a blender, drill two holes, separate preamps, and such? Purchased Dimarzio Black Angels for a CEO-7. Should I cancel the order and go with something easier for me?
Hi tony, i use the LR baggs lyric tru-mic in my martin d18 and i love it because it is incredibly transparent and also very feedback resistant.
I recently got an alvarez baritone acoustic guitar and i'm looking for a transparent pickup that can accurately pick up that natural low end through a PA system.
The pickups that are on my radar are the K&K trinity, i've even considered the LR baggs anthem but i hate the sound of the piezo. I recently listened to the fishman rare earth mic blend soundhole pickup.
Would you recommend pairing the black angel with an internal microphone?
FYI i play in a church setting in a room that accommodates about 200 people.
Tony, how about using acoustic Impulse Responses? I just started experimenting with those and with some exceptional results. I’m using a pedal from Mooer (RADAR) and I purchased some IRs from 3Sigma. What are your thoughts on that?
I'll have to check that out :-)
I do have a Martin HD28 Retro which comes with the Fishman Aura VT Enhance. It's great, but the impulse responses open a variety of options, specially for live playing since nothing beats a good mic in the studio
What model is the guitar Mike use?
Andreas Cuntz
How does it compare to the Fishman blackstack? They look similar. I gotta think about it a bit more now that I saw this Dimarzio pickup.
I have to try out the Fishman first before I compare :-)
Acoustic Life yo man, have you done a review on that blackstack yet? I don’t believe I’ve seen it and am still very interested and curious!
If we wanted to hear what this pickup sounds like , why would you use Mike Dawes to demo it. He is using tons of effects and usually 3 or 4 pickups in that guitar. This is not a true representation and a kind of disingenuous video.
$150isnt inexpensive to me.
Hi
Tony, would this pickup work for a Gibson J 200 Western Classic?
I do believe so, just be sure to check the soundhole dimensions :-)
It seems like it would work.
