@@darthvader_513 it was a lot better. My grandparents reminisce on it as the best time in their lives. The working masses of Albania were truly united, committed to the construction of socialism and the improvement of their nation. For this reason, there was a much better sense of community, people were much kinder to each other.
There was also a culture of intellectualism, the average person would be well-versed in political theory and philosophy, either from political education in their mandatory army service (both men and women) or from being exposed to it throughout their lives. The people embraced a collective spirit in the army as well, there were no ranks - so decisions were made democratically, just as in the political system. In civilian life, people had firearms so they could be called to defend Albania from invasion at any moment.
Living standards were decent for most, but still lower than the high standards set by the Soviet-allied states of Europe. This was because the USSR deviated from Marxist-Leninist ideology (revisionist) after 1956, so Hoxha refused to trade with them. After this, the main country that Albania imported goods from was China. This continued until 1976, after Mao Zedong died Hoxha saw the new Chinese leadership were revisionists as well - from this point forward Albania was to be economically self-reliant.
By 1980s, most people lived in modern, newly-built apartments. Education system was very good, raising many generations sharp in science, math, and sociology. Healthcare was good and widely available as well - and the socialist healthcare system included state-sponsored vacations to resorts on the beach. Equipment for farming was still half a century behind, so crop yield was lower than it could have been - but still adequate, there were never shortages of food. There were not usually shortages of consumer goods either, the older women were also usually very good in sewing so clothes made from re-used fabric was common.
Politically, Lenin’s theory of democratic centralism and dictatorship of the proletariat worked very well in practice. The population was generally enthusiastic to engage in such processes, which was a great deal of why it functioned successfully.
